FedEx 6m PATENT OFFICE.
FRED EVANS, OF SUMMIT, NEW JERSEY.
WALKING DOLL.
Application filed'Deeeniber 29, 1919. Serial No. 347,972.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, FRED Evans, of Summit, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a alking Doll, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys, particularly dolls, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a new and improved construction, whereby the doll or image may be manipulated by hand so as to simulate walking.
A further object of the invention is to provide a walking doll which is exceedingly simple in construction and which can be manufactured at a modicum of cost.
Other objects and aims of the invention more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious, and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved doll; and
Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein similar referenc characters refer to similar parts, the reference numeral 1 indicates the body or torso of the doll, to which arms 2 are pivotally attached. The lower part of the torso is provided with an extension 3, upon which is formed the pivots 4, and the upper ends 5 of the leg 6 are mounted upon the pivots 4, as shown.
A tube 7 extends through the lower part of the torso, said tube being preferably located directly above the pivots of the legs. The upper portions of the legs are circular and each is provided with a channel 8. At tached at 9 and 10 to each leg, and extending through the tube 7 is aspring or cord 11, the ends of the spring or cord adjacent its point of attachment lying in the channels formed in the upper ends of the legs. lVhile the connecting member 11 is described as a spring or cord, elastic connecting means may be employed if'desired.
The manner of manipulating the device is as follows :The torso of the doll is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1922.
grasped by the hand, and one of the feet 12 is engaged with the floor and the body or torso moved forward. This operation causes the other leg to move forwardly, due to the fact that the movement of the body with the foot 12 engages with the ground, causes that part to remain stationary, thereby causing the connecting member to slide through the tube, thereby swinging the free leg forwardly. The foot 13 is then engaged with the ground and the operation repeated."
It will, therefore, be seen that by merely tilting the figure slightly from side to side, while moving it forward, will cause the legs to move alternately forward, thereby simulating the act of walking.
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a walking doll, the combination with a torso having a passage extending through it from side to side, of limbs having their upper portions attached pivotally to the torso below the mouths of the said passage, and a cord passing movably through the said passage in the-torso and having its ends connected with the upper portions of the said limbs at a. distance from the said pivotal points of the limbs whereby when the lower end of one limb is held stationary and the torso moved forward the cord will be drawn upon and the other limb raised and swung forwardly.
2. In a walking doll, the combination with a torso havinga passage extending through it from side to side, of limbs laving their upper portions pivotally attached to the torso below the mouths of the said passage in the torso, the upper portions of the said limbs being formed circularly with the pivots of the limbs at the centers of the circles, the said circular portions being provided with chan nels extending eircumferentially with respect to the said circular portions of the limbs. and a cord passing movably through the said passage in the torso and having its ends secured in the said channels of the upper portions of the limbs whereby when the lower end of one of the limbs is held stationary V the torso, the ends of the cordbeing attached to the pivoted ends of the limbs at one side 10 of the pivot whereby when the lower end of one limb is held stationary and the torso moved forward the cord will be drawn upon and the other limb'moved forwardly.
V In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
. FRED EVANS.
