To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Break, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriters, and more particularly to inking mechanisms therefor, the main object of said invention being to provide a machine of the kind described herein with a multi-color inking mechanism of the type commonly employed in printing machines, wherein regular printers ink may be used, and means controllable by an operator for intantaneously shifting said inking mechanism so that the roller carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.
The present invention is an improvement on the machine disclosed in my application filed November 10, 1919. Serial No. 336,810. It differs from the machine disclosed in said co-pending application in that it provides a se mental roller or two rollers havin differ elnt colored inks, a sectional distributing cylinder, and a sectional ink fountain adapted to convey different colored inks to said roller. The present invention is shown applied to a machine of the type disclosed in my copending application filed November 5, 1919, Serial No. 335,857.
The device embodied in the present invention constitutes improved means for inking the types in typewriting or like machines, and is intended to supersede the inking devices-such as ribbons or ,pads--now in common use.
Other objects consist in the novel features of construction described herein. and still others will appear in the specification, whe'rein like-parts are represented by like characters throughout.
It is understood that I do not wish to limit myself to minor details of construction, nor to the use of this inking mechanism in connection with my machine described in my application of November 5th 1919, which is used for the purpose of illustration only and not by way of limitation.

The machine frame lis of usual construction, embracing preferably a universal keyboard and parts for mounting thevarious mechanisms of the machine. Upon asupporting track 58 running transversely across the machine frame, near its rear end, is mounted Said inking mechanism, which is arranged to slide thereon a distance for ob-' taining the required color of inking. The movement of said inking'device on said track 58 may be facilitated by the use of anti-friction rollers or wheels 58 and brackets 58 for guiding said movements. The device for shifting said inking mechanism embraces a rocker shaft 40, preferably mounted in bearings il-42, and provided at its inner end with an arm 39, to which is pivoted one end of a link 38, the other end of which is pivotally attached to a lug on said inking mechanism frame. On the outer extremity of said rocker shaft is mounted another arm 43 at about its middle, which arm is, or may be, provided at either end with a key 44, adapted to actuate said arm 43 for thereby to rock said rocker shaft 40 and shifting said inking mechanism so that the roller carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position. 7
l1 designates a frame of said inking device arranged to be shifted upon said track 58, and upon or within which are mounted the various members of said device. An ink fountain 2 is mounted therein, and is divided into separate compartments 3"3 by a wall 3 adapted to hold different colored ink; said ink fountain comprising a knife 2 for cutting up the ink as it is conveyed from the fountain by a fountain roller 4, mounted upon a shaft 1 journaled in bearings insaid fountain and adapted to rotate said fountain roller, and a ratchet wheel 4* on said rotatable shaft iir which coacts with other means for intermittently rotating said fountain roller to intermittently convey ink from the fountain to ink carryprovided with a grooved collar arranged obliquely around its circumference. Said distributing cylinder is or may be provided with a longitudinal cylindrical opening and hubs 8 -8" for rotatably mounting said distributing cylinder upon flanges lF -F upon frame lF. Upon one of said hubs 8 is keyed a driving wheel for driving said distributing cylinder on said flanges. In recesses in said flangesF -F a shaft 17" is rotatably mounted; upon which shaft are mounted arms 17 adapted to convey an ink carrying member 15 from its normal rest position in contact with fountain roller 4 to its inking position for inking the type as it is being delivered to the printing point. Said arms 17 are provided at the lower end with a slot 17 into which is taken the outer ends of shaft 19 upon which said ink carrying member 15 is mounted. A toothed member 17 on one of said arms is adapted toengage with ratchet wheel 4 on shaft 4 of fountain roller 4 and to actuate same for intermittently rotating said fountain roller.
Upon said arms 1'7 are pivoted yielding members 18 at 17 which are held in normal position by a spring 18*, one end of whichspring is or may be attached to the toothed member of said arm 17 v and the other end to said yielding member 18, in the lower end of which is a recess or bearing wherein 1s ournaled said inker shaft 19.
The object of this arrangement of the yielding member 18 upon arms 17 is to allow aoseee ink carrying member 15 to yield to the pressure of the type as it forces its Way from inking position to a printing point, thus protecting both type and ink carrying member from damage; During the inking operation yielding members 18 are swung bythe pressure of said type in the direction of the printing point against the action of spring 18*, thus moving shaft 19 of ink carrier 15 in same direction along slot 17. To one of the outer ends of shaft 17" is keyed a ratchet Wheel 6 adapted to rotate said shaft and actuatearms 17 for delivering said ink carrying member 15 toward the inking position and to return it from said position to normal rest position in contact with said fountain roller 4.
Said ink carrying member comprises preferably two rollers 15 separated from each other by a grooved collar 15 and mounted upon a shaft 19, said rollers being adapted for rotatable and slidable movement thereon;
and are arranged to carry different colored inks. A slidable member 16 is provided with a stud 16 arranged to be taken into said oblique grooved collar 10 on distibuting cylinder 8 said stud coacting with said cylinder to impart to said ink carrying member a longitudinal to and fro sliding movement on shaft 19 while said rollers 15 are being rotated upon said shaft 19 by frictional contact with said distributing cylinder 8. Shaft 19 embraces a substantially square part 19 and a cylindrical partsliding member 16 being mounted upon said substantially square part and adapted for slidable movement thereon, while said ink carrying members 15 are mounted upon said cylindrical part of said shaft, and are adapted for rotatable and slidable movement thereon. ()ne of said ink carrying rollers 15 is or may be provided with a grooved collar 15 into which is taken a flange on the inner end of said slidable member 16, and wherein said member 15 is adapted to rotate and whereby it is moved slidably upon said shaft during the travelof said ink carrying member along the circumference of said distributing cylinder toward or away from said inking position.- lft is evident then that saidink carrying member 15 not only functions as an ink carcarying roller, but also as a' distributer roller, for as its ink carrying rollers 15 are moved along the circumference of said distributing cylinders 8, by means of frictional contact with said cylinders, they are rotated and through slidable member 16 coacting by means of stud 16 with obliquelygrooved collar 10 on'distributing cylinder 8. said rollers are furthermore given a longitudinal contacts, said grooved collar 11 separating said distributing cylinders and thus preventing the admixture of the different colors of ink during the to and fro movement of said ink carrying-distributer rollers. Said rollers further function as form rollers when they are delivered by their actuating mechanism into the form inking position.
The driving means for said inking mechanism above described comprise a chain of gearing operably connected with a keyboard; and consists of a main driving pinion 30 mounted upon a driven shaft 28 and driven by a ratchet 49. Upon the other end of saft 28 is mounted another pinion 31 which meshes with'and is adapted to drive pinion 32 mounted upon driven shaft 33 which carries a member 34 provided preferably with a rectangular chamber 01' slot adapted for taking in a key 37 on shaft 36 which is adapted to slide in said slot 35 during the shifting of said inkin mechanism and to be rotated when said pinion 30 is driven by mechanism controlled from a keyboard. On the inner end of shaft 36 is mounted another pinion 32 which is meshable with and is adapted to drive pinion 12 keyed to one of the hubs of said distributing cylinder 8. A pinion 26 is meshable with I and adapted to be rotated by driving P1111011 30 and is mounted upon a shaft 20, which is provided with a member embracing prefer ably a rectangular recess into which is taken a preferably rectangular key 22 on shaft 21 which is mounted in bearings in frame F. Upon said shaft 21 is preferably mounted an arm 5 to which is pivoted one end of a link 6, the other end of which link is pivoted to a ratchet meshable with ratchet wheel 6 40 and adapted to drive same and thereby actuate arms 17 and thus carry the ink carrying-distributer-form roller along the circumference of sad distributing cylinder 8 toward and away from said inking position. These two systems of drivin means are arran ed to be driven at differing speeds. As in tie machine disclosed in my previous ap plication filed November 10th, 1920, Serial No. 336,810, the gearing vary in size and are so arranged relatively to each other, that when the said gearing is operated by mechanism controlled from a keyboard, the distributing cylinder is forced to move revolubly one or more times, while the inker is being recipro'cated into the inking position along the surface of said cylinder, a distance equal approximately to half the circumference of said distributing cylinder. The inker being in frictional contact with said cylinder, it is forced to rotate a proportionate number of times by said cylinder during said transeverse, and the slidable member of the inker coacts with said cylinder to impart a longitudinal to and fro movement to said as inker in addition to said rotary movement during said traverse. Such construction causes a proper distribution of the ink. During the travel of said ink carrying-distributer-form roller a distance along the circumference of said distributing cylinder from its rest grooved collar 11 on the distributing cylinder and 15 on ink carrying member allow of the longitudinal to and fro movement of said ink carrying member without admixing of the different colored ink.
Ratchet 49 arranged to drive main driving pinion 30 is adapted to move in uides, not shown, and is pivotally attached toa link 50, the other end of which is pivoted to a bell crank 51 pivoted to machine frame 1 at 51; a link 52 being pivoted to the other arm of said bell crank 51 by one end and by the other to an operating lever 63 pivoted at 64 and adapted to be actuated by a spring 65.' Normally said operating lever 63 is held in position of rest by a detent 85 against the action of said spring 65; said detent is pivotally mounted at 85, and is provided with a supporting arm 85, an actuating arm 86 and a stop 86 abutting on a lug 89 on the machine frame 1. A spring 87 attached to lug 88 tends to maintain saiddetent 85 innormal position. A universal bar 90 is adapted to actuate said detent by the operation of key levers 80 pivoted at 81 and controlled from a keyboard 60-60; said universal bar 90 being adapted to depress arm 86 of said detent 85 against the action of spring 87 to release operating lever 63 and allow spring 65 to move said lever in a direction to force the driving means herein described to operate said inking mechanism. Subsequently to the inking and printing operations the inking mechanism actuating means and thereby the inking mechanism are returned to retracted rest position, preferably during the intermittent movements of the carriage, b a retracting device embracing a driven shaft 76 rotatably mounted in machine frame 1; a pinion 77 mounted thereon and adapted to drive said driven shaft 76; another pinion 73 preferably beveled being mounted on said shaft and arranged to be driven thereby; another pinion 72-preferably beveledbeing meshable with and normally disengaged from said pinion 73; a driven shaft 71 upon which pinion 72 is mounted and which is adapted to be driven by said pinion, an arm having a guiding member 70 mounted on said driven shaft 71 and adapted to be rotated thereby; a bell crank 68 pivoted at 68" and having a free arm 68 and a collar 71 for housing driven shaft 71 which is adapted to be rotated therein; a spring 78 attached to a support 79 tending to maintain said bell crank 68 and said retracting means 70-71 72 in normal position with pinion 72 disengaged from pinion 73; a cam 69 mounted into engagement with its detent 85 to bev maintained thereby in normal position with said spring under tension. Said retracting mechanism is adaptedto be actuated by the means for moving the carriage during the intermittent movements of said carriage, said means comprising a rotatably mounted spring wheel 7 5 provided with a driving gear 74 rotatable by said springwheel, said gear 74: engaging with pinion 77 mounted on driving shaft 76 for driving said shaft.
lit is evident that said inking mechanism is operated automatically, being actuated by spring poWer under the control of an operator and is returned to retracted rest position, by retracting means during the intermittent movements of the carria'ge; independent of the operator; the only effort required is to release the actuating means of said inking device.
l have provided a machine of the kind embodied in my invention with a special type bar adaptable for use in connection with an inking mechanism of the type disclosed here- This type bar, however, is shown herein only by way of illustration and not by way of limitation, as it is evident that the type may be conveyed to the printing point past the inking position in a variety of other ways. Type bar 48 is pivoted upon a seg mental support at 48 comprising a type head with the type in such position as to be inked by the form roller of said inking mechanism during its progress toward the printing point; an arm on said type bar provided with a slot 48* adapted for taking in a stud 83 on an arm' 83 pivoted on machine frame 1 at 8 1; a link 82 being pivoted by one end to said arm 83 and by its other end to a key lever 80 operated from a key 60. Said type bar 4C8 when delivered into the printing position subsequently to being inked by said form roller 15 does not directly perform the printing operation, but delivers the type a distance from the paper. An impression bar 67 is actuated by mechanism controlled from a keyboard to move toward said type and to press said paper: against said type and thereb; produce the impression on said paper. This t pe of printing mechanism is disclosed in diitail in myaplication filed on November 5th, 1919, Serial l lo. 335,857, and is touched upon briefly in the present application; Means-for regulating the degree of the impressing force is further provided in connection with this machine, and is more fully covered in said application ofi November 5th, said means partly comprising a'rocker shaft 47 rotatably mounted in hearings on the machine frame 1 and having a threaded end 47* for actuating said changeable means for regulating the impressing force of said impression bar, and fully illustrated and described and claimed in said application of November 5th 1919; a crank 46 on said rocker shaft 47 being preferably situated at the front of the machine and of immediate access to an operator for easily regulating the impressing force byturning said crank in the required direction.
it is often desired to render the inking mechanism inoperative and I have provided -means therefor, comprising a rocker shaft 54 mounted rotatably in hearings in the machine frame l and having an arm 61 mounted thereon and which arm isprovided with a hook 62 which is arranged to be projected into the path of said operating lever 63 to prevent its being operated by spring 65 when released by detent 85 during the operation of the mechanisms of the machine as controlled from a keyboard. Upon the other end of said rocker shaft 5% preferably at the front of the keyboard is mounted another arm 55 at about its middle which may be provided with keys 56 adapted to depress said arm in either direction and to rock said shaft 54 and thereby swing arm 61 toward or away from operating lever 63 at the will of the operator. It is thus possible for an operator to instantaneously ren der said inking mechanism inoperative or operative as required. Furthermore, by means of keys at it is rendered easy for an operator to instantaneously shift said inking mechanism to obtain the desired color for printing, and also by actuating crank 46 .at the front of the machine to control the degree of impressing force. It may be noted that my machine embodying the present invention is provided with a number of improvements that are of great advantage in a good typewriting machine and that will be conducive to speed and the production of uniform beautiful printing.

-lln the preferred type of machine embodying my invention, the relative dimensions of pinions 3.0 and 58 are or maybe such that when pinion 30 is forced to make a revolution by the operation of the mechanisms of the machine as controlled from the keyboard. it causes pinion 58 to actuate arm -5 on shaft 27 for moving rollers15-15;
into and out of the inking position prior to the returning of the types to normal rest position; and during the retracting operationof lever 63, pinion 30 is caused to make a revolution in the opposite direction and causes pinion 58 to actuate said arm 5 for again moving said inking rollers into and 'ont of inking position subsequently to the printing operation and to the returning of the types to normal rest position. However, the relative dimensions of the pinions 30 and 58 may be such that said pinionBO in describing a revolution may caus pinion 58 to actuate arm 5 for moving the rollers into inking position, and subsequently to the printing operation and during the retracting operation of lever 63 to cause the 1nk1ng rollers to return to normal rest position.
The operation is as follows:
When a key is depressed, key lever 80 bears down on universal bar 90 which in turn actuates detent 85 to release operating lever 68 which is actuated by spring 65 and moved in a direction to move downward link 52 for actuating bell crank 54 to in turn through link 50 operate ratchet 49 and drivemain driving pinion 30 and thereby rotate a number of times said distributing cylinder 8. Said main pinion 30 simultaneously rotates pinion 20 which through its shafts 20- 21 actnates toggle 5(3 to force ratchet 6 to operate ratchet wheel (3 which in turn forces the ink carrying-distributer-form roller to travel from its rest position contacting with fountain roller 4 to the form inking position by means of rotating shaft 17 which forces arm 17 to move forward toward said form inking position and to carry said form roller thereto. S1 inultaneously with the release of said inking mechanism actuating means, key lever 80 causes type bar 48 to be swung toward the printing point to encounter in its path said inked form roller brought to' the form inking position and is inked thereby prior to its-arriival at the printing pos1- tion. The initial step is to bring pinion 72 into engagement with pinion 73 against the action of spring 78 by actuating bell crank 68 by cam 69 mounted on rocker shaft 69 which is operated by mechanism controlled from a keyboard. When the key 60 is released the mechanisms are retracted to normal position, the inking mechanism being returned to retracted rest position during the intermittent movements of the carriage, when the rotation of spring wheel 75 causes gear 74 to rotate pinion 77 which through driven shaft 76 causes the rotation of pinion 73 which in turn actuates retracting arm 70 through pinion 72 and driven shaft 71 driven thereby, said retracting arm 70 hearing down upon operating lever 63 to force it into engagement with detent 85 against the action of spring 65. During the returning of said operating lever to retracted rest position, said distributing cylinder is rotated in the opposite direction, arms 17 are forced to swing back toward normal position and to carry back said form roller 15 into contacting position with said fountain roller, said toothed member 17 of arms 17 engaging with ratchet wheel 4 which is forced to rotate by said toothed member during the return of said arms to normal position, thus causing fountain rollers 4 to rotate and to convey fresh ink from the fountain to said ink carrying-distributerform roller when it reaches a position contacting with said form rollers.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. In a typewriting or like machine, types movable to a printing position, an inking roller having different colored inks and arranged to move into and out of the path of movement of said types, means for moving said inking roller into the inking position, means separating the different colored inks on said roller, and means for shifting the roller so that the portion carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.
2. In a typewriting or like machine, types movable to a printing position, a sectional inking roller having different colored inks, means for moving said sectional roller into the inking position to ink the types as they approach the printing position, and means for shifting the roller so that the section carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.
3. In a typewriting or like machine, a sectional inking roller having different colored 105 inks .and arranged to move into and out of the paths of movement of the types, means for impelling said inking roller into the inking position, means for shifting the'roller so that the section carrying the required col- 110 ored ink may be brought into inking position, and means cooperating with said roller for distributing the inks evenly during the reciprocating movement of said inking roller into and out of inking position.
4-. In a typewriting or like machine, inking rollers having different colored inks, said roller being adapted to move into and out of the path of movement of the types, means for reciprocating said inking rollers 1 into the inking position, a sectional ink fountain having different colored inks and adapted to convey different colored inks to said inking rollers, and a device cooperatin with said roller for rendering said inks uni ormly 125 smooth and even during the said reciprocating movement.
5. In a typewriting machine or the like two inking rollers having different colors inks and arranged to move into and out of we the paths of movement of the types, two ink fountains having different colored inks and adapted to intermittently convey a fresh supply of inks to said rollers, and two distributing devices cooperating with said rollers, for smoothing out uniformly and evenly the inks on said rollers during-the movement of said rollers toward and away from said inking position, means being provided for reciprocating said rollers into the inkingposition to ink the types as they approach the printing position. I
6. In a typewriting machine or the like, types movable to a printing position, two inking rollers having different colored inks, said rollers being adapted to ink the types as they approach the printingposition, spring means for reciprocating aid inking rollers into the inking position to ink said types, means cooperating with said rollers for maintaining the roller in normal rest position, manually operable means for releasing said inking rollers to allow of the inking operation, and means for shifting the rollers to allow of the delivering into the inking position the roller having the desired coloredink.
7 In a typewriting machine or the like, inking rollers mounted on the same axis and having different colored inks, and a distributing device contacting with said rollers, each roller contacting witha corresponding member of said distributing device, means for reciprocating said inking rollersinto the inkingppsition, and to move revolubly during its reciprocating movement into and out of the path of movement of the types, and a sectional ink fountain having different colored inks for intermittently conveying said inks to said inking rollers.
8. In a typewriting machine or the like, a plurality of inking rollers having different colored inks, a sectional distributing device, said rollers and said device beingin frictional contact witheach other, each roller contacting with a corresponding section of the distributing device, mechanical means for reciprocating said inking roller into and out of inking position and causing said roller to move revolubly during said reciprocating movement on said distributing device, and a sectional ink fountain carrying a different colored ink in each section, additional means being provided for conveying said coloredinks from said fountain to said inking roller.
9. In a typewriting machine or the like, types, two inking rollers having different colored inks, a two section ink fountain having different colored inks, each section of said fountain being arranged to'convey ink to the corresponding inking roller, means for reciprocating said rollers into and out of the paths of movement of the types, and two distributing cylinders cooperating with said rollers for rendering theinks uniformly even during the reciprocating movement of said rollers, means being provided for shifting the inking mechanism so that the roller carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.
10. In a typewriti'ng machine or the llke, a plurality of inking rollers having different colored inks, a plurality of ink fountains carrying different colored inks, each foun tain being arranged to supply ink to its corresponding ink roller, means for conveying ink from each fountain to its corresponding roller, mechanical means for reciprocating said. rollers into and out of the paths of the types, and shifting mechanism for shifting the rollers so that the roller carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.
11. In a typewriting machine or the like, an inking mechanism including a sectional inking roller anda sectional rotatable distributing cylinder, said roller being arranged to carry different colored inks and being in frictional contact with said cylinder, a sectional ink fountain having different colored inks for intermittently supplying said inking roller with different colored inks, and power means to operate said inking mechanism for automatically reciprocating said sectional roller into and out of inking position.
12. In a typewriting or like machine, a
plurality of inking rollers having different colored inks, types movable to a printing position, said inking rollers being movable in cycles into and out of inking position, and means to control the movement of said types and said inking roller in a predetermined relation, and means for shifting the rollers so that the roller carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.
13. In a typewriting or like machine, a plurality of inking rollers having different colored inks, a plurality of distributing cylinders, said rollers being in frictional contact with said cylinders, each roller contacting with a corresponding cylinder, types, mechanical'means causin said rollers to traverse the circumference of said cylinder a distance to theinking position to ink the types as they approach the printing position, and means causing said distributing cylinders to move revolubly and by frictional contact to cause said roller to be rotatcd during the travel of said inking rollers toward and away from the inking position. means being provided for shifting the rollers so that the roller carrying the required colored ink may he brought into inking position,
14- In a typewriting or like machine, a plurality of inking rollers having difierent colored inks, a' plurality of distributing cylinders contacting with said rollers, each cylinder with a corresponding roller, and a carrier for reciprocating said inking rollers into and out of inking position, said rollers being automatically adjustable on said carrier to yieldingly resist the pressure of the types during the inking operation, means being provided for shifting said rollers so that the roller havin the required colored ink may be delivered lnto inking position.

In a typewriting machine or the like, inking rollers having different colored inks, a sectional distributin element contacting therewith, types movab e to a printing position, a frame carrying said rollers and adapted to move said rollers a distance along the surface of said distributing element to the inking position for inking said types, a holder pivotally su porting said frame, and means to operate said holder for moving said inking rollers into and out of the path of movement of said types, shifting mechanism being provided for shifting the roller carrying the required colored ink so that said roller may be brought into inking position.
16. In a typewriting machine or the like, types movable to a printin position, a plurality of .inking .rollers aving dilfcrent colored inks, holders for said rollers, carriers pivotally supporting said rollers, means to yieldingly centralize said holders on said carriers, means to operate said carriers for reciprocating said inking rollers into and out ofthe path of movement of said types, and means for shifting the rollers so that the roller carrying the required colored ink may be moved into inking position.
17. In a typewriting or like machine, types, a sectional inking roller having different colored inks, holders for said roller, carriers pivotally supporting said. holders, springs yieldingly centralizin the holders on the carriers, stops adapted to limit the pivotal movement of the holders in either direction, and means causing the carriers to reciprocate said sectional roller into and out of the path of movement of said types, shifting means being provided to shift the roller so that the section carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.
18. In a typewriting or like machine, types movable to a printing position, a sectional distributing element, a sectional inking roller contacting therewith and having different colored inks, holders for said sectional roller, caiiriers pivotally supporting said holders, a shaft supporting said carriers, and means associated with said shaft for actuating the carriers to cause said carriers to reciprocate the sectional roller into and out of the path of movement of said types, means being provided for shifting the roller so that the section carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position. v
19. In a typewriting or like machine, types. a sectional distributing cylinder. a sectional ink fountain having different 'tain roller to t 1e inking colored inks, a shaft journaled therein, a sectional fountain roller on said shaft adapted for intermittent rotation, a sectional inking roller having different colored inks, said roller being in constant frictional contact with said distributing cylinder, and normally contactin with said fountain roller, a section of said inking roller being normally in apposition with a corresponding section of said fountain roller, holders for said inkin roller, carriers pivotally supporting said holders, a toothed element associated with said carriers, means to operate the carriers for reciprocating said inking roller into and out of the path of movement of said types, means for delivering at the inkingposition the desired section of said inking roller, and means on said shaft coope 'ating with said toothed element for intermittently rotating said fountain roller to inked surface of said founroller as said inking roller is approaching its normal rest position to contact with the fountain roller.
20. In a typewriting machine or the like, inking rollers mounted on the same axis and having different colored inks, types, distributing cylinders, a f 'ame mounted for pivotal movement, pivotal arms on said frame arranged to carry said inking rollers, a ratchet wheel for actuating said frame to reciprocate said rollers into and out of the path of movement of said types, automatically actuated mechanism for operating said ratchet wheel, and a device for returning said automatically actuated mechanism to normal rest position and for maintaining said rollers in said position, and means for shifting the rollers so that the roller carrying the re quired colored ink may be brought into inking position. i
21. In a typewriting machine or the like, two inking rollers having different colored inks, types movable to a printing position, means for movin said rollers into the inking position to ink the types as they approach the printing position, said inking rollers being movable into and out of the path of movement of said types and being universally adjustable to automatically accommodate themselves to the pressure of the deliver a freshl types as they move from the inking position to the printing position, and means for shifting the rollers so that the roller carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.
22. In a typewriting or like machine, a plurality of inking rollers having different colored inks. means to automatically reciprocate said rollers into and out of inking position, types arranged to he inked by said rollers as they approach the printing posi-. tion, said rollers being universally and automatically adjustable on said reciprocating means to accommodate themselves to the pressure of the types as they are moved from inking to printing position, and means for shifting the rollers so that the roller 4 carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position,
23. In a typewrlting or like machine, a frame movably mounted upon a support in the machine frame, an inkin device supported in said frame and inc uding a distributing element and a sectional inking roller having different colored inks, means for reciprocating said roller into and out of the path of movement of the types, and means controllable by an operator for shifting the frame so that the section of said roller carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position,
24. in a typewriting or like machine, a frame movably mounted on the machine frame, an inking mechanism supported therein, said mechanism including a distributing cylinder mounted for revoluble movement in said frame, and inking rollers having different colored inks, and contacting with said cylinder actuating means in operative connection with said inking mechanism for simultaneously revolving the cylinder and for reciprocating the inking-roller into and out of inking position, shifting mechanism for said frame controllable by the operator, and loose connections in said actuating means to allow of the shifting of said frame so that the roller having the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.
25. In a typewriting machine or the like, types, a frame adapted for slidable movement on the machine frame, an inking mechanism supported therein. said inking mechanismincludinga plurality of inking rollers having different colored inks and a sectional fountain adapted to convey ink to said rollers, a plurality of distributing cylinders mounted for revoluble movement in said frame, carriers pivotally supported on said frame, holders for said rollers pivotally sup ported on said carriers, automatic means for actuating said carriers to reciprocate said rollers into and out of the path of movement of said types, and mechanical means con trollable by an operator for moving said frame a distance so that the roller carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.

In a typewriting or like machine, an .1 w l inking mechanlsm adapted to ink types as they approach the printing position, said mechanism including a distributing cylinder divided intosections and a sectional inking roller having different colored inks and con-i tacting frictionally with said sectional cylinder, means for intermittently conveying a fresh suply of ink to said inking roller,. means causing said roller to move along the circumference of the cylinder a distance to he reciprocated into the inking position for inking the types as they aproach the printing position, means causing said distributing cylinder to revolve simultaneously with the traverse of said roller along its surface, said frictional means being adapted to impart a rotary movementto said roller during lts reciprocatory movement, and further means for imparting a longitudinal to and fro movement to said roller during said traverse, shifting means being provided for moving said inking mechanism a distance to allow of the delivering to the inking posi tion the desired section of roller.
29. In a typewriting or like machine, a sectional distributing cylinder, a sectional inking roller having different colored inks and contacting with said distributing cylinder, a slidable member associated with said inkin roller, means causing said roller to move a distance along the surface of said cylinder into the inking position. said means imultaneonsly causing said distributing cylinder to revolve and to impart a rotalry movement to said roller during its travel; a stud on said. slidable member. a grooved collar on said distributing cylinder into which said stud is adapted tobe taken, said grooved collar cooperating with said stud to impart a reciprocating movement lcngitudinally to said type inking roller during its traverse, and means controllable by an operator for shifting the inking mechanism to allow of the delivering to the inking position of the section of said roller having the desired colored ink.
'30. In a typewriting or like machine, an inking mechanism including a plurality of distributing cylinders and a plurality of inking rollers having different colored inks, said roller'being adapted to move into and out of the path of movement of types, reciprocating means causing said inking rollers to move along the surface of said cylinder a distance to the inking position, said means causing said cylinder to simultaneously move revolubly and to impart a rotary movement to said rollers during their reciprocating movement, an element associated with said cylinders and having a grooved collar, a slidable member associated with said inking rollers and having a stud, said grooved collar being adapted to receive said stud and to cooperate therewith for imparting an endwise longitudinal to and fro movement to said rollers, and mechanism controllable by an operator for shifting said mechanism to allow of the feeding to the inking position of the desired roller.
31. In a typewriting or like machine, a plurality of inking rollers having different colored inks, a sectional fountain arranged to carry different colored inks and to convey said inks to said rollers, a shaft journaled in said fountain, a sectional fountain roller on said shaft adapted for intermittent rotation, holders for said inking rollers, car -vs pivotally supporting said holders, as for actuating said carriers to move aid rollers into and. out of the inking position, and means associated with said shaft coacting with means associated with said carriers for intermittently rotating said sectional fountain roller to deliver a freshly inked surface thereof to said inking roller as said inking roller is approaching its normal rest position to contact with said fountain roller, shitting means being provided to allow of reciprocating into the inking position the roller having the desired colored ink.
32. in a typewriting or like machine, an inking mechanism, driving means therefor, an operating lever for actuating said driving means, said mechanism including a plurality of inking rollers having dillereut colored inks and a distributing cylinder in frictional contact therewith, means for actuating said lever to cause said driving means to reciprocate said inking rollers into and out of inking position, types adapted to be inked by said rollers, and means for the returning of the operating lever to normal rest position subsequently to the printing operation, means being provided for shifting the rollers so that the roller having the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.
33. In a typew'riting or like machine, an inking device including inkers having different colored inks, driving means therefor, an operating lever, means operably connecting said driving means with said lever, mechanical means for impelling said lever in a direction to force said driving means to actuate said inking mechanism, types movable to a printing position, means cooperating with said lever for'maintaining the lever in normal rest position, manually op erablo means for releasing said lover to allow said mechanical means to operate the lever, said driving means and said inking device for inking the types as they approach the printing position, and means for returning said lever, said driving means and said inking device to normal rest position, and means for shifting said inking device so that the inker carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.
34. In a typewriting machine or the like, types, an inkling device including inkers having diiierent colored inks and adapted to ink said types, gearing adaptedto drive said mechanism, a ratchet in operative connection with said gearing, an operating lever, mechanical means for impelling the lever in a direction to cause said ratchet to operate the gearing and force said inking device to ink the types as they approach the printing position, and retracting means for the returning of the operating lever to normal rest position, means being provided for shifting the inkers so that the inker carrying the required colored ink may he brought into inking position.
In a typewriting machine, key-controlled types movable to a common printing position, an inking device having a sectional inking roller adapted to carry different colored inks, gearing for operating said inking device, a ratchet for driving said gearing, mechanical means operably connected with a keyboard for actuating said ratchet to cause said gearing to operate the inking device for reciprocating said sectional inking device into and out of the paths of movement of said types, and means for shifting said roller so that the section carrying the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.

In a typewriting machine, a series of types movable to a common printing position, an inking mechanism having inking rollers adapted to carry different colored inks, actuators for automatically operating said inking mechanism to cause said inking rollers to be reciprocated into the inking position for inking the types as they are severally approaching the printing position, a retracting device, and automatic means for actuating said retracting device to cause said device to cooperate with said actuators :for the returning of said actuators and said inking rollers to normal rest position subsequently to the printing operations, means being provided for shifting the rollers so that the roller having therequired colored ink may be brought into inking position.
46. In a typewriting machine, a series of types movable to an inking position and then to a common printing position, an inking device having inking rollers adapted to carry different colored inks, actuators for operating said mechanism and causing said rollers to be reciprocated into and out of the paths of movementof said types, a detent for maintaining said actuators in normal rest position. key controlled means for releasing said actuators to allow of the inking operation, a driven shaft, a retracting device mounted thereon and adapted to be driven thereby, and automatic means for driving said driven shaft to cause said retracting device to cooperate with said actuators for the returning of the actuators to normal rest position and into engagement with its detent. means being provided for Qliiftinnr the rollers so that the roller havin the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.

In a typewriting machine, types movable to a common printing point, an inking mechanism having inkers carrying different colored inks, actuators for operating Said mechanism and for reciprocating said inkers into and out of thepaths of said types, a driven shaft, a toothed \vheel arranged to drive said shaft, a retracting mechanism upon said shaft and adapted to be driven thereby, and means independent of the operator for causing said toothed wheel to operate said retracting mechanism and to return the actuators to normal rest position subsequently to the printing operations, means being provided for shifting the inkers so that the inker having the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.

In a typewriting machine, types movable to a common printing position, an inking mechanism, having inkers carrying different colored inks, actuators for operating said mechanism for inking the types as they severally approach the printing position, power for operating said actuators, a driven shaft, a retracting device thereon and adapted to be driven thereby, a toothed wheel associated with said shaft and adapted to drive the shaft and the retracting device, a carrier revolubly supporting said driven shaft, automatic means for operating said toothed wheel to cause said retracting device to cooperate with the actuators for the returning of said actuators to normal rest position, said toothed wheel being normally disengaged from its actuating means, and means for actuating said carrier to deliver said toothed wheel into engagement with its actuating means and allow of the retracting operation, means being provided for shifting the inkers so that the inker havingithe required colored ink may be brought into inking position.

In a typewriting machine, types movable to a common printing position, an inking mechanism including inkers having different colored inks and adapted to ink said types as they severally approach the printing position, actuators for said mechanism, a carrier, a retracting combination revolubly supported therein, said combination comprising a driven shaft, a toothed wheel for driving said shaft, and a retracting device upon said shaft and adapted to be driven thereby, means for maintaining said carrier and said retracting combination in normal rest position, auto matically operated mechanism for operating said retracting device, said toothed wheel being normally disengaged from said automatically operated mechanism. and means for moving said toothed wheel into engagement with said automatic mechanism to for maintaining said carrier and. said re-.

In a tyypewriting machine, types movable to acommon printing point, an ink ing mechanism including inkers having dift'erent colored inks, actuators causing said mechanism to ink the types as they severally approach the printing position, a driven shaft, a retracting device mounted thereon and adapted to be driven thereby, a toothed wheel upon said shaft and adapted to drive the shaft and the retracting device, a carrier for revolubly supporting said shaft and the devices associated therewith, driving means for said toothed wheel, a spring for maintaining said carrier in normal rest position with the toothed wheel disengaged from its driving means, key-controlled means for actuating said carrier against the action of its spring to deliver the toothed wheel into engagement with its driving means, and means for actuating said driving means to force said retracting device to return said actuators to normal rest position, means being provided for shifting the inkers so that the inker having the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.

In a typewriting machine, types movable to a common printing position, an inking mechanism including inkers having difl'erent colored inks, actuators causing said mechanism to ink said types as they severally approach the inkin position, a carrier, a rocker shaft rotata 1y mounted therein. a retracting device on said shaft adapted to be operated thereby, a toothed wheel upon said shaft arranged to drive as said shaft, means for driving said toothed wheel, means for maintaining the carrier in normal rest position with said wheel disengaged from its driving means, a spring for maintaining said retracting device in normal rest position with reference to said carrier, key actuated meansfor moving said carrier into operative position for delivering said toothed wheel into engagement with its driving means, a carriage adapted for intermittent movement, moving said carriage and for actuating said driving means during said intermittent movements of the carriage to force said retracting device to cooperate with said inkrest position, and means for guiding said retracting device into engagement with said inking mechanism actuators, means being provided for shifting the inkers so that the inker having the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.

In a typewriting machine or the like, an inking mechanism including inking rollers having different colored inks, types, said mechanism being adapted to reciprocate said rollers into and out of the path of movement of said types, means for maintaining said mechanism in normal rest position, manually operable mechanism for releasing said inking mechanism to allow of the inking operation, means for retracting said inking mechanism, and means controllable by an operator and adapted to be moved into the path of movement of said actuators for throwing said mechanism out of operation, means being provided for shifting the inkers so that the inker having the required colored ink may be brought into inking position.
