Be it known that I, CHARLES FISHER, a citizen of the AUnited States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Savings Banks, of which Vthe following is a specification.

This invention relates particularly to a savings-bank of the type known on the market as a library salfe.

AThe primary object of the invention is to provide an improved safe of this type, having one of the main side walls serving as a closure. A further object is to provide a construction for suoli a safe which will enable the salfe to be manufactured conveniently and at moderate cost. An additional object is to provide improved locking mechanism for a safe of this character.

In the construction illustrated, the' safe comprises a book-form casing A having one side A adapted to serve as a closure; a locking member B disposed inside the longitudinal edge \vallof the main casing-member A; and key-controlled means C for actuating the memberB to unlock the safe.

The casing A affords one side Wall, the back edge wall, the ifront edge Wall, and the end edge Walls of bhe book-form safe, the 4closure A affording the other side Wall of the safe.

It is preferred to provide the walls 2 and 2 by applying to the inner suilface of the metal plate l an angle-'form brass member, which may itself be formed from a strip of sheet brass, by bending the strip so as to` form an angle. The strip is then bent to 4form .the three edge Walls of the casing A, and the flange-portions 2b are secured to the steel plate l by means of lugs 4 which are punched inwardly from the plate l and extend through perforations 4a and clenched, as shown in Fig. l. It will be noted that. the walls 2 and 2"L are located a short distance inside the edges of the. plate l., so that said walls, which may be given a satin finish, will give the appearance of the gilt edges of the leaves of a book.

The cover-section, or closure, A,-has applied to its inner surface an angle-form member which affords end flanges 5 and a longitudinal flange 5 which are adapted to telescope with or fit inside of the walls2 and 2a of the section A. This member is provided With an attaching flange 5" which is secured to t-he steel pla-te 6 of the closure A by clenching lugs 7 `formed. integrally With the member G. These clenching lugs extend through perforations 7 with which the attaching flange 5 is provided. The angleform member which affords the flanges and 5 has the flange 5" notched at the corners of the book, as indicated at S, the member being bent into U-form, as appears from'- Fig. l.

The` metal plate 6 which constitutes the main portion of the closure A is provided at itsrear edge with inwardly off-set lugs y 1l, affording a channel, or shoulder, 11, as indicated'in Fig. 4, against which the forwardly-turned edge of the back Wall 1 is adapted to bear, The back Wall .1* il ali. The member B equipped with lugs 12 which are adapted to project between the lugs 11 and bear against the rea-r inner marginal surliace of the plate 6. The purpose of the lugs described is to maintain the rear edge oi the plate 6 in pivotal relatio-n with the free edge of the rear wall 1n of the casing.

In the process of manufacture, a method is employed which tightly stretches the covering 10 over the sections of the safe when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 4. lhus, the covering tendsto hold the sections in propel` pivotal relation. It is preferred, however, to provide, also, a spring 13 which connects the cover 'and the casingsection A and tends to throw the coversectlon to the open position shown in Fig. 4:, and also tends to limit the cover-section from swinging further open. The spring 13 is a leaf-spring secured byscrews 13 to the rear-portion of the inner surface ot the plate 6. The spring isrurved so as to be somewhat in the form oi' a V when thedcvice is in the open condition shown in l ig. i. The free end portion 13" of the spring bears on the inner surface of the plate 1,'and the free extremity is lodged beneath or back of a catch, or lug, 14, with which the plate iis pro-vided. This lug may be provided hy stamping the metal ot the plate 1 inwardly, as shown in Fig. 4. lt will be understood from Fig. 4 that the spring 13 serves to hold the cover-section il in open position, and also that it tends to prevent the cover-section from being swung open still further.

The longitudinal flange 5fl of the coversection A is provided with an inturned flange 5C which is adapted to be engaged by the longitudinally disposed locking member comprises a strip of metal which is provided with slots, or perforations, 15, engaged by lugs 15 which are formed integrally with the attaching flange cally 2 ot the angle-member which 'forms theJ end valls and front wall of the casing-section A. The lower or inner edge of the member B isin this manner pivotally connected with the casing A. The upper or outer edge-portion of the member B is bent to aii'ord a flange 1G which is adapted to 'en-v gage the flange 5^'. The member B normally stands in the position shown in Fig. 4, and .the locking engagement occurs in the manner shown in Fig. 5,' it being understood that the member B is automatidisplaced by the flange 5 when `the sections are closed, and then springs into locking engagement.

The key-barrel tits in a perforation in the en d edge wall 2 of the safe and is confined in position hy a clipy 1.9 which is se- Lacasse cured to the wall 'by means of rivets 19:2 The member B is adapted to be thrown to the locking position by means of a wire spring 20 which has one end restingupon the side wall of the safe, which has its intermediate portion passing freely through a retaining lug 19t of the clip 19, and which has its other end secured, as indicated at 20a, to the arm 17 of the member B. The arm 17 is equipped adjacent the perforation 17a with a lug 171 which is adapted to be engaged by a key inserted in the barrel 18, when the key is rotated. Thus, it will be understood from F ig. 6 that when a key is inserted and rotated in the proper direction, the bit of the key Will strike the lug 17", and thus throw the locking member B away from the wall 2, thus releasing the locking ange 16 from engagement with the locking iiange 5c.

lt will be noted from Fig. 1 that the locking flanges 5 and 16 extend longitudinally the greater portion of the length of the casing-sections, so that the sections will be securely held together throughout their full length. Also, the arm 17 of the locking member B is disposed adjacent the end edge wall Q of the casing-section A, so as to be conveniently operated by a key inserted through said end wall.

It may be noted, however, that one of the flanges 5 of the cover-section A is cut away, as indicated at 5d, so as not to interfere with the slot guard which is arranged on the inner side of the wall 2.

`In the manufacture of the improved safe, a suitable method is employed to apply the fabric or leather covering 10 tothe plate 1, and the extension 1a of said plate which Jforms the curved rear edge wall or back of the safe, the covering being tightly stretched in thisprocess and secured by a plying the angle bar which provides the en edge walls 2 andl front edgewall 2n of the safe. the operation being such as to tightly stretch the cover, after which it is secured in the operation of applying the angle member which forms the flan-ges v5 and 5R.

The construction described may beconveniently manufactured, presents aneXceed- Vingly neat appearanceand enables th'safe to he opened in such manner as to fully expose the contents. In library safes upon the market1 it has been the practice to employ a rigid casing which forms the two sides and back of the safe, and provide a closure which Jforms the edge walls, or portion of the edge walls, which corresponds With the exposed llt leaves of the book. This construction does not afford as complete access tothe interior of the safe as'is desirable. In other respects, also, the improved construction possesses advantages over the previous constructions, as will be `readily understood by those skilled in the art.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.

book-form spring interposed between the rear portions of said sections, means for releasably locking the front edge-portions of said sections together, and coin-adniission means in one of said edge-walls.

A savings-bank comprising a main casing-section provided with a rear edge wall, end edge walls, and a front edge wall, a cover-section having pivotal relation with said rear edgewall. a covering applied to saidsections, a spring interposed between the rear portions of said sections and serving to open said cover-section and to limit the swing thereof, and means for releasably locking the 4front edge-portions of said sec- .tions together.

8. A savings-bank comprising a main casing-section and a cover-section, said main casing-sectionhaving a back edge wall, end edge walls, and a front Aedge wall, and said cover-section having a pivotal support on .the upper edge of said back edge wall, but without pintle connection, a covering applied to said sections and tending to hold the same in pivotal relation, a spring interposed between the rear portions of said sec. tions and adapted to throw the cover-section i to the open position and tending to limit the .curved rear wall, a brass angle strip applied to the front edge-portion and end edge-portions of said plate, said coversection affording one side of the sate and `being mounted in pivotal relation with respect to the upper edge of the back wall of the main section, a covering applied to said sections, a spring tending to throw the cover-section to the open position, coinadmission means in one of said walls, and means releasably locking the cover-section to the main section.

10. ln a savings-bank, 'the combination of a main casing-section comprising a plate vhaving a curved portion affording a rear of said back wall, and means for releasably locking said cover-section to the front edgeportion of said main section.

1l. ln a book-form savings-bank, the combination of a main casing-section comprising a side plate, a rear edge wall, end edge walls and a front edge wall, a cover-section comprising a plate mounted to swing with relation to the upper edge of said rear edge wall and equipped near its edges with a flange adapted to fit within the end edge Walls and front edge wall o'f the main section, an integral covering over the side and back wall of the main section and over the side wall of the cover-section, means tend ing to throw the cover-section to the open position, and means for releasably lockmg the front edge-portion of the cover-section to the front edge portion of the main section.

12. In a book-form savings-bank, the combination oa main casing-section provided with a rear edge wall, end edge walls, anda front edge wall, a pivotally mounted longitudinal locking member disposed adjacent the inner side `oi' said front edge wall, a cover-section mounted on the rear edge wall to swing with relation thereto, said coversection being equipped at its front edge portion with a longitudinal locking member adapted to be engaged by said first-named locking member, and means for actuating said Erst-named locking member.

13. Ina savings-bank, the combination of a pair of casing-sections adapted to swing with relation to each other, and which together form a box-like compartment, one of said sections being equipped with a locking flange at its longitudinal edge-portion, a pivotally mounted longitudinal locking member disposed in the other section near the front longitudinal edge thereof, said lastnamed locking member being adapted to swing, a spring adapted to throw said lastnamed member to the locking position, and key-actuated means adapted to retract said member 'against the force of said spring.

14C.
