Be it known that I, JosEPH C. PRIMS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Hornell, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Slicing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a slicing machine in which the article to be cut into slices is supported on a plate which is movable lengthwise on a table for the purpose of presenting successive parts of the article to the cutter, a machine of this character being shown for example in United States Patent No. 1,310,752 July 22, 1919.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide means for guiding and holding the article supporting plate on the table in such manner that the plate will be guided accurately and also permit of cutting uniformly thin slices at all times.
Another object of this invention is to provide means for holding the article supporting plate in place which operate to automatically take up wear and thus prevent any rattling or noise when operating the machine.
A further object of this invention is to so construct the guiding means for the article supporting plate that the same is not subjected to any lateral pressure and is not liable to jump out of place under normal operation and still permit of readily and easily removing the plate from the table for cleaning purposes.

Figure 1 is to top plan view of the table and supporting plate of a slicing machine embodying my invention. Figure 2 is a rear end elevation of the same. Figure 3 is a fragmentary cross section, on an enlarged scale. taken on line 3-3. Fig. 1. Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the article supporting plate.
Similar characters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The carriage or table of the slicing machine forming part of the means for presenting the article tobe sliced to the cutter or blade which cuts the article into slices may be variously constructed but in the form shown in the drawings the same comprises a marginal frame 10 and a panel 11 secured to the central part of the frame by bolts 13 or similar means. This table may be reciprocated so that its front end moves back and forth relatively to a cutter, or the table may be fixed and the cutter moved back and forth past the front end of the table beyond which the article to be sliced pro ects.
Above the table is arranged the supporting plate 14 upon which the article to be sliced is fastened by holding or clamping means of any suitable and approved character which however form no part of the present invention.
The means containing my invention for guiding the plate on the table and holding the same normally against lateral displacement but permitting the plate to be readily femoved for cleaning are constructed as fol- 15, 16 represent two longitudinal guideways arranged lengthwise on the upper side of the table adjacent to the opposite longitudinal edges, the guideway 15 being preferably flat and horizontal and the guideway 16 being constructed in the form of a longitudinal groove which is preferably rounding in cross section, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. On the underside of the supporting plate adjacent to one of its longitudinal edges the same is provided with feet or hearing points 17 of fiber or similar material which sli'dingly engages with the flat horizontal guideway 15 of the table and on its underside adjacent to its opposite longitudinal edge this plate is provided with a longitudi nal guide rib 18 which is preferably rounding in cross section and engages with the groove of the table. By this means the supporting plate will be guided in its longitudinal movement on the table but held against lateral displacement so that the article supported on the plate will always be properly presented to the cutter and insure cutting uniformly thin slices. The radius upon which the guide groove is formed is preferably less than the radius upon which the guide rib is formed so that when the rib engages the groove the lowest part of the rib will not touch the bottom of the groove and thus permit the rib to constantly center itself in the groove and take up wear between the co-operating surfaces of the guide rib and groove without causing any looseness between these parts and avoiding noise in operating the machine or uneven cutting of slices from the article on the supporting plate.
A downward pressure is constantly exerted against the upper side of the supporting plate adjacent to that edge thereof which has the guide rib so as to keep the latter in proper engagement with the guide groove during the normal operation of the machine. The preferred means for this purpose shown in the drawings comprise a presser plate or bar 19 mounted lengthwise on the table adjacent to the outer side of the guide groove therein and engaging with the upper side of the adjacent longitudinal edge portion of the supporting plate. The outer longitudinal edge of the presser plate. preferably rests upon a raised bead 20 on the table upon which the presser plate can turn vertically as a fulcrum while the inner edge of this presser plate bears against a longitudinal flange 21 projecting laterally from the supporting plate beyond the guide rib thereof. This presser plate is constantly pressed downwardly by tension means which in the present case comprise a plurality of upright bolts 22 arranged in a longitudinal row and passing through corresponding openingsin the table and presser plate adjacent to the guide rib and groove, each of these bolts engaging the head at its upper end with the top of the presser plate and being drawn downwardly by a spring 23 which surrounds the bolt and bears at its upper end against the bottom of a recess or pocket 24 in the. underside of the table while its lower end bears against the nut of this bolt, as best shown in Fig. 3.
As the article supporting plate slides forwardly or backwardly on the table the guide rib and groove between the same are held firmly in engagement with each other by this tension device and any wear between the same is automatically taken up thereby. lVhen however, it becomes necessary to re move the supporting plate from the table for cleaning, inspection or repairing this can be easily done by first lifting that edge of the supporting plate opposite its guide rib, as
shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and then moving the supporting plate to the un-ribbed edge thereof when these members may be guickly and easily separated or dismembered or any desired purpose. Assembling of these members may be easily effected by manipulating the same in reverse .order oft-hat just described.
It is to be understood that in the complete machine means are provided for advancing the supporting plate either automatically or manually as the cutting of slices from the front end of the article progresses which means are so designed that the supporting plate may be moved backwardly manually preparatory to beginning the slicing of an article, but as these means form no part of the present invention no further reference thereto is deemed necessary.
As a whole this means of mounting and guiding the supporting plate on the carriage or table is very simple in construction, the same is very efficient in operation, not liable to get out of order and it is possible to maintain the same in the most sanitary condition.
I claim as my invention:
1. A slicing machine comprising a table member, a plate member, means for slidably mounting said plate member on said table member, including a longitudinal guide groove formed in one of said members and a longitudinal guide rib arranged on the other member and engaging said groove, and a pressing device for yieldingly holding said rib and groove in engagement with each other.
2. A slicing machine comprising a table provided in its upper side with a longitudinal guide groove, an article supporting plate provided on its underside with a longitudinal guide rib which is arranged in said guide groove, and a pressing device operating downwardly on said plate for holding the rib thereof yieldingly in engagement with said groove.
3. A slicing machine comprising a table provided in its upper side with a longitudinal guide groove, and an article supporting plate provided on its underside with a longitudinal guide rib which engages with said groove and which is round in cross section.
4. A slicing machine comprising a table provided in its upper side with a longitudinal guide groove which is round in cross section, and an article supporting plate provided on its underside with a longitudinal guide rib which engages with said groove and whiclris round in cross section.
5. A slicing machine comprising a table provided on its upperside adjacent to one of its longitudinal edges with a longitudinal guide groove, an article supporting plate provided on its underside adjacent to one of its longitudinal edges with a longitudinal guide rib which engages with said groove, a presser plate engaging with-the upper side of said supporting plate adjacent to the rib thereof, and means for yieldingly drawing the presser plate downwardly.
6. A slicing machine comprising a table provided on its upper side adjacent to one of its longitudinal edges with av longitudinal guide groove, an article supporting plate provided on its undersideadjacent to one of plurality of uprightbolts passing through its longitudinal edges with a longitudinal said presser plate and table and bearing with guide rib which engages With'said groove, a their heads against the upper side of said 10 presser plate engaging with the upper side presser plate, and a spring surrounding each 5 of said supporting plate adjacent to the rib bolt and hearingat its ends against the nut thereof, and means for yieldingly drawing thereof and the adjacent 1giant of said table. the resser plate downwardly including a J OS PH C.
