York, have invented new and useful limprovements in Replacers for Rolling Stock of Railways, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to portable devices employed for re-railing locomotives, cars,- and other rolling stock that has become derailed, and my improvements are directed to the novel form and contour of such devices whereby they are rendered more efficient and serviceable than heretofore.
The invention includes the employment of a pair of inner and outer replacing members, which are capable of utilization for replacing rolling stock upon the track rails in either direction of travel.
The invention is characterized by the feature wherein the flange of a wheel of a car or the like that has been derailed is, upon meeting the re-railing member of the pair, positively guided in its path of travel to mount and-re-enter tracking relation with the rail, the other member of the pair enabling the opposite wheel to likewise mount the companion rail; and
The invention is also characterized by the feature wherein the crown of the mount part of the re-railing member of the pair is in substantiallythe same horizontal plane as the upper surface of the rail to be mounted, and is provided with a depression to be travelled by the wheel flange in lowering the wheel tread upon the'rail surface.
Otherfeatures and advantages of my in vention will hereinafter appear.

While the devices in their positions illustrated in the drawing are adapted for service in re-railing rolling stock moving in the direction of the arrow of Fig. 1, it is obvious that they may be used in the same positions with respect to the rails for servicein re-railing rolling stock opposite direction. I
-The member 1 has a structure including a base 5 whereby it may lie upon the ties as 6, adajcent a rail, said base having a recessed portion 7 to accommodate a portion of the flange 8 of the rail upon which it seats. The side 9 of the member 1 which is adjacent to moving in the the rail has a projecting hook element 10 that is adapted to extend over the rail surface and under the outer portion of rail head 11, to thereby engage the rail for the purpose of localizing the device in its operative position.
The upper surface 12 of member 1 is inclined upwardly'from its opposite ends, the inclines merging into an intermediate crown portion 12*, and is provided with guide ribs 13 which extendrespectively from the opposite ends of said member, lying in approximate parallelism with the inner edge 14 of the device, these ribs however diminishing inwardly in sectional area and merging into the linear clearance between the ribs 13, and
therefore tends to crowd the wheel flange toward the rail at the outer side of the rib 13 which is in advance thereof; and the memher 1, at the respective points between the inner terminal portions of the-ribs 13 and the edge 14;, is provided with base depressions 16, whereof the forward depression allows the wheel flan e, on leaving crown 12", to drop down easily alongside the rail the foregoing disclosure:

This wall 17 is surmounted by a vert1-'- cal extension 18 that accentuates the guiding characteristic of wall 17, and serves as a seatupon which the wheel tread may travel.

The web or wall 17 must be so disposed as to have its inner face practically inthe vertical planeof the inner side of the rail head to be mounted, in order that when a wheel is on the companion rail it will be held truly in position upon the flat upper surface 19 of member 2, and will travel over this surface todrop down into tracking engagement with its rail.
The member 1 is provided with a rear base web 20 having engaging means as 21 for the reception of spikes 22 whereby the device may .be'spiked to the ties.
Variations within the spirit and scope of my invention are equally comprehended by I claim 1. A re-railing device for rolling stock comp-rising a member having a seating base, its inner side having a stralght edge to lie against a rail, a hook element to engage the rail head, the hook element extended by an arcuate web from the inner side of the member, and the member characterized as having its upper surface upwardly inclined from opposite ends, with an intermediate crown portion, that is in substantially the same horizontal plane as the surface of the rail to be mounted, the inclines being warped towardthe center and provided with a rear. vertical wall-like extension, to crowd recast? a wheel flange travelling thereover toward the rail, ribs upon the inclined surface which respectively diminish and merge ing, wardly' into the upper surface of the mem-w being crowded over toward the rail, and the member having depressions lying between the terminal portions of the ribs and the arcuate web of the hook element, to co-act therewith and ermit a wheel flange to drop easily alongsi e the rail and thereby permit the wheel tread to engage in track relation with the rail.
2. A re-railing device for rolling stock comprising a member having a seating base, its inner side having a straight edge to lie against a rail, a hook element to engage the rail head, and having an upper, reinforce, guide extension, the hook element extended by an arcuate web from the inner side of the member, and'the, member characterized as having its upper surface upwardly inclined from opposite ends, with an intermediate crown portion, that is in substantially the same horizontal plane as the surface of the rail to be mounted, the inclines being warped toward the center and provided with a rear' vertical wall-like extension, to crowd a wheel flange travelling thereover toward the rail, ribs upon the inclined surface which respectively diminish and merge inwardly into the upper surface of the member toward its crown portion, the ribs lying in approximate parallelism with the straight edge of the member, and forming each an inner boundary for a wheel flange that is being crowded over toward the rail, and the member having depressions lying between the terminal portions of the ribs and the arcuate web of the hook element, to co-act therewith and permit a wheelflange to drop easily alongsidethe rail and thereby permit the wheel tread to engage in track relation with the rail.
