Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORLANDO HUFFMAN, OF LUGIEVILLE, NEBRASKA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,273, dated June 24, 1873; application tiled October 18, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, ORLANDO HUFEMAN, of Lucieville, in the county of Saline and State ot' Nebraska, have invented a new and' useful article, the same being' a Portable Fence; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the drawings of said fence hereunto annexed, making a part of the specification, in which- Figure l is a single panel of said fence. Fig. 2 shows the panels joined together as they properly belong; and Fig. 3 shows an end view of said fence with stakes adjusted in their proper place.
My invention relates to the construction of portable fences 5 and consists in the novel arrangement or method of construction hereinafter described, and which is designed to serve as a valuable improvement in the art to which it appertains.
Fig. 1 of the drawings represents two sections of my fence, which, when united in proper form, are represented by Fig. 2, leaving at each end an open space, which is filled by the small section marked Fig. 4. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of my fence held in position and made secure by diagonal stakes.
The letters A represent upright posts, which, Y
when the fence is completed, rest upon a suitable foundation upon the ground, and B represents the panels or fence-boards.
My method of construction is as follows, namely: I rst place three of the posts horizontally upon the ground at proper distances apart, and nail or spike to the sides thereof two of the panelsB. I then reverse the position of the posts and attach an additional panel to the opposite sides thereof. The fence then assumes the form shown by the three righthand posts and panels of Fig. 1. The
next step taken is to add one other post, as shown at the extreme left hand of Fig. 1, and nail thereto two panels, one on each side, and also attach said two panels to the two left hand posts of the section above described. These last-mentioned panels form the top boards of the fence, while those first described serve as the bottom thereof, or they may be reversed at will.
After two sections of my fence are constructed in the manner above described, they are united together by passing the left-hand post of the right-hand section between the panels and beside the posts of the left-hand section, when the united parts assume the form and position represented by Fig. 2 of the drawings. This process is repeated until the fence has acquired the length desired.
When this is done there only remains two openings to be closed, which are represented by the letter D.
To fill these openings I construct small sections in the manner shown by Fig. 4, the posts of which are passed between the panels of the fence and the openings are closed.
The letters II represent stakes, which are crossed below the upper panel and driven into the ground, as shown, to hold the fence securely in a vertical position.
What I claim as my invention is- In portable felices, the sections herein described, constructed and adapted for connection in t-he manner substantially as specifiedthat is to say, the end of each section is left incomplete, as described, but when interlaced with its neighbor the two form a perfected and continuous fence, as shown.
ORLANDO HUFFMAN.
In the presence of It. H. MALLORY, Gr. J. PEGKHAM.
