Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 3, 1&22.
Application filed. September 3, 1920. Serial No. 407,852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT I. FAUon'r'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of Delaware, in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in fans, and the invention has for its object to provide a fan especially adapted for use in connection with swings, as, for instance, porch swings, for creating a cooling current of air toward the occupants of the swing, and controlled by the swinging of the swing.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an end view of a swing provided with the fan;
Figure 2 is a front View.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a porch swing consisting of a seat or chair 1 of usual construction, which is supported from the ceiling timbers 2 of the porch, a suitable distance above the floor 3, by means of chains a. These chains are connected at their tops with hooks 5 in the beams 2 of the ceiling, and at their lower ends they are branched as shown at 6 to connect with the front and rear of the seat.
In order to provide the cooling current of air I arrange the fan above the seat. In the present instance this fan consists of a bar 7 having on its under side hooks 8, with which may be connected a sheet 9 of cloth, for instance, or any other suitable material.
This bar 7 is supported by flexible members 10, which are connected with the hooks 5 before mentioned at one end and with hooks 11 on the top of the bar at the other.
The bar also has a hook 12 in its rear side at the center thereof, and with this hook is connected one end of a flexible member 13. The said member passes over a pulley 14 which is journaled in rear of the swing in a depending substantially U- shaped bracket 15 connected with the ceiling beams 2 of the porch. From the pulley 14 the flexible member passes downwardly beneath a pulley 16 journaled in rear of the seat and thence forwardly to a connection with the hook 17 at the rear of the seat and in the center thereof.
In operation, when the seat swings, each forward movement thereof will cause the bar 7 to swing rearwardly, the bar swing ing on the flexible members 10. When the seat moves rearwardly the bar will swing forwardly by gravity, since with the seat in normal position the bar is in rear of the connection upon which it swings, that is, the bar tends to swing forwardly when it is in normal position. Thus a cooling current of air will be created by the movement of the fan, which will cool the occupants.
I claim:
l. The combina ion with a swinging seat having means whereby the same may be suspended from an overhead support, of flexible elements suspended from said support, a fan above said seat and having a bar connected to and supported by said flexible elements, stationary pulleys arranged rearwardly of said seat, a flexible operating member connected to the intermediate portion of said bar and trained about said pulleys, and a hook carried by the rear side of said seat at the bottom of the same and having connection with the lower end of said flexible operating member whereby the swinging of said seat oscillates the fan in the opposite direction, said flexible operating member being located entirely at the rear and above the seat.
2. The combination with a swinging seat having means wherebythe same may be suspended from a support, of flexible elements suspended from said support, a fan arranged above said seat and having a bar connected to and supported by said flexible elements, stationary guide means arranged rearwardly of said seat, a flexible operating element connected to the rear side of said swing at the lower portion of the same and'to the bar of said fan and passed through said stationary guide means, said fan being provided with a depending sheet.
