"zlt lwillvb'e appreciated that in apparatus -'of .this character tlief accuracy of thei work required precludesi the use of any cushioning device fbruabsorbinfg the shock resulting. ifrom' stopping of, the i-a idly moving too-1islidevin the proper position for chasing or relievir'ig and that thelack of any such cushioning device imposes heavy stressesin parts *of the meehanism. Moreover, the time available for the'movement from one radius of operation to another is so short that the movement required must be very rapid. A further object of the inven tion consists in providing a cam whose controlling surfaces may be readily machined to very accurate dimensions, and in so mounting the back face of the cam as to eliminate all bending strains of same and its carrying shaft, and to make possible the ready renewal of all surfaces subject to shock. This is attained by providing a large bearing area, not possible with the peripheral cams heretofore employed wherein contact in the action is substantially along a line and causes rapid wear. This latter action resulting in undue wear, and the fact that heavy parts are necessary and cause heavy shock due to impact of the said parts, are par- ,correspon ticularly iobjectionable features of the apparatus-asheretofore employed,- P1 ii .The nature of the-invention-will be best understoedwhen desciibed in 3 connection with the; accompanying tdravvings, illustrating the*invention -embodie'd in a device for chasing interrupted threads on 1 gun breech plugs, and'inWhiCh wwz-r-a; 11 f? e Fig 1- is front elevation Loff-thef active -portion 1 of--. a: lathe 'lwithsaid device adapted thGIQtQ;.-EiS Fig.= 2 isa plan thereofz 3 1, LF" g. 3 isia: section: taken 'oi-i the line 3 3,
