FRED W. REIMANN, OF MANISTIQUE, MICHIGAN. I
TAG HOLDER AND ILLUMINATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2'7, 1921.
Application filed August 25, 1919. Serial No. 319,613.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRED W. REIMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manistique, in the county of Schoolcraft and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tag Holders and Illuminators, of which the following is a specification. V r
This invention has for its object to provide a device primarily designed for attachment t motor vehicles whereby the license tag thereof is supported in such manner as to be conspicuous and clearly readable.
Another object is the provision ofa tag .holder of this character equipped with adequate illuminating means whereby the license tag is properly illuminated when conditions so require.
With these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds the invention comprises the novel features of construction, combination of elements and arrangements of parts'which will be more fully described in the following specification as set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the improved tag holder and illuminator.
Fig. 2 represents a transverse sectional view therethrough.
Fig. 3 represents a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view through the holder and illuminator taken at right angles to Fi in similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates the rear wall of the improved holder and illuminator, which consists essentially of two parts, a body designated generally by the numeral 6 and a removable top or cover designated generally by the numeral 7. The body 6 includesthe rear wall preferably constructed of sheet metal and formed integrally with the end walls 8 having connection with the bottom 9. Guide flanges 10 are formed internally of the body 6 adjacent [the front edges of the side and bottom walls and slidably receive the removable transparent plate 11 b which the open front of the body is close preventing the admission of dust and dirt, or other matter thereto, which mi ht render the license tag diflicult to read. I he transparent plate 11 likewise 2. Referring to the drawings in detail whereserves as a reflector to throw the light waves from the illuminating element upon the license tag.
The cover or top 7 is removably supported upon the upper open end of the body 6 and preferably disposed at an inclination as suggested in' Fig. 2 so as to more effectively shed water. The body andtop are maintained in assembled relation by elongated bolts 12 which extend vertically through the holder and are provided at their upper terminals with loops or heads 13 and, at
their lower terminals with wing-nuts 14 by which the top or cover 7 is securely clamped in position upon the upper open end of the body 6.
The license tag designated by the numeral 14* is secured, adjacent its upper edge, to the upper portion of the rear wall 5 by bolts or equivalent means 15 which is conveniently accessible from the upper open end of the holder, whereas the bottom edge of the license tag is confined between the rear wall 5 and an upstanding rib or flange 16 secured to or formed integral with the bottom 9. In this manner the license tag is securely held in position in the holder and is conveniently removable for replacement or the like should necessity so require.
The top or cover 7 is formed with an elongated longitudinally extending opening 17 admitting light to the interior of the tag holder from-the incandescent lamp or other source of light 18. The opening 17 communicates with a hollow tubular member port the lamp in the tubular member 19. a socket 20is arranged in one terminal of the tubular member and receives the base portion of a conventional type of incandescent lamp 18. A preferred type of electrical connector or plug 21 is removably fitted in the terminal of the socket 20 opposite the lamp base and connects with suitable conductors 22 whereby the lamp is supplied with an electrical current from a suitable source of electromotive force, such, for instance, as the ordinary electric lighting system of a motor vehicle. For convenience in replacing the lamp 18 in case of injury thereto as when the same is burned out, the socket 20 is removably fitted in the terminal of the tubular member 19, for instance by providing the socket with a laterally projecting pin 23 engageable in a bayonet slot 24 formed in the terminal of the tubular member whereby the socket is removably secured in position therein and conveniently removed in case access is desired to the lamp 18.
What I claim is:
1. A tag holder and illuminator comprising a hollow body provided with an open top, a removable cover for the open top of the body, means for supporting a license tag within the body and rearwardly of the line of the open top, means for supporting a license tag within the body and rearwardly of the line of the open top, illuminating means at the top of the body above the opening therein, and a transparent reflecting means positioned in front of the casing to reflect the light rays from the illuminating means toward the rear and against said tag, the latter being visible through the transparent reflecting means. 1
2. In combination, a tag holder including a hollow body having an open top, a removable cover for the open top of the body provided with an elongated opening, means arranged on the rear wall of the body for supporting a license tag, a transparent reflecting means positioned at the front of the body, illuminating means arranged to radiate the rays therefrom through the opening in the top against the reflecting means and thence against the tag, the latter being visible through the transparent reflecting means.
3. In combination, a holder comprising a hollow body, means on the rear wall of the body for supporting a license tag, a removable cover for said body provided with an elongated opening, means engaging the bottom wall of the body for releasably securing the cover upon the body, illuminating means within the cover, and a transparent reflector arranged to reflect the light rays passing through the opening from the illuminating means against the tag, the latter being visible through the transparent reflecting means.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto.
