A further object of the invention is to provide an improved combination pipe.

A further object of the invention is to provide a-wrench which can be converted from a pipe wrench to a coupling wrench or monkey wench,'by the use of one hand, with out removing the wrench from the pipe, and which can be tightened or loosened very easily on the pipe and yet produce a very secure gripping action.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts :and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that within the scope of what is claimed, changes. in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, in

I The shank portion or the head 11 is further'provided'with a transverse slot 17 providing spaced walls 18 and 19 at either side thereof, said slot being designed to accommodate a worm nut 20 which is rotatably mounted on the reduced portion 21 of a pivot screw 22, which is engaged through anopening 23 in the side wall 19, while the threaded end of the screw is removably'engaged in aninternally threaded socket '24 in the wall 18, communicating with the slot 17 the head of the screw engaging the outer the .nut is provided with a central unthreaded aperture for receiving the securing screw on which the nut is rotatably mounted against displacement. The jaw 12 adjacent the outer wall of the slot 16, is provided with a transverse circular opening 24- adapted to receive apin 25 to turn frictionally therein,fsaid pin having an enlarged knurled manipulating head 26 atone end, and a rivet head or-upset end 27 at the opposite end,-retaining the pin in position for rotation in the aperture 24. The pin is provided intermediately of its ends with a cut-out 28 providing a half-round portion 29 adapted to be removed into the semi-circular portion of the recess at the outer edge wall of the slot .16, the plane ofwhich wall bisectsthe pin, or extends on a line diametrically there of to conform and aline with the flat face of the cut-out portion 28. The purpose of this pin will be subsequently explained, but it may be further stated that said pin may be engaged by a spring, preferably a flat piece of resilient steel,designated at 30, and secured to one side of the jaw 12 as indicated at 31 so as to straddle the pin and engage beneath the operating head 26 thereof, so as to hold the pin outwardly at the adjacent side. That is, the half-round portion of the pin may be inc'losed entirely within the semicircular recess in the jaw 12 at the face of the slot 16, or may be disposed to project therefrom entirely, for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly pointed out.
Slidably engaged in the opening 15 for movement at right angles to the shank or head 11, is a rectangular shank 32 having worm threads 33 at one edge designed to cooperate with the nut 20, so that rotation of the latter in one direction will shift or slide the adjustable shank 32 in one direction, opposite rotation of the nut serving to shift the shank in the opposite direction. This shank 32 is formed intermediately with a pair of spaced apertured lugs 34 extending at right angles with respect thereto, and in the direction of the extent of the handle 10 stem, or shank 11 and the jaw 12 heretofore described. Between the lugs is pivotally mounted as shown at 35, the extension or shank proper 36 of the movable or outer jaw 37-, which jaw is further provided with the oppositely extending teeth 38 common in the class of pipe wrenches, and adapted to cooperate with the teeth 13 heretofore specified, so as to firmly grip the pipe. The aw 37 extends parallel to the jaw 12 when the shank or extension 36 is disposed at right angles to the head 11 and said jaw 37 is offset from the adjacent edge of the head so that the jaw faces extend in the same direction or parallel to the handle and shank of the wrench. The inner end of the shank or extension 36 is beveled as indicated at 39 and adapted to coact with a projection 40 at the inner face of the adjustable shank or block 32, so as to limit the pivotal movement of the movable jaw with respect to said block on the pivot 35 between the lugs 34. However, the jaw is normally held in an angular position with respect to the jaw 12, with the shank or extension 36 extending diagonally within the slot 16, through the medium of a spring 411, preferably a flat band steel spring having one end anchored to the adjacent edge of the projection at the bight portion of the face between the lugs 34:, as indicated at 42 and the free end thereof extending along the rear edge of V the extension or shank 36 so that when the half-round portion of the pin 25 is disposed within the recess of the jaw 12 adjacent neoneee to the slot 16 contiguous with the aperture 24., the spring n will urge the jaw 37 to cooperate with the jaw 12 for gripping a pipe while permitting the necessary angular movement thereof to permit automatic adjustment of the wrench on the pipe by one hand, with the handle 10 extendingvertically above the pipe, thereby particularly adapting the device for use in cramped places, such as in ditch work. When it is desired to dispose the jaws in parallel relation to one another, instead ofthe jaw 37 extended in divergent relation rearwardly from the jaw 36 at the faces 13 and 38, the pin 25 is turned so that the half-portion thereof is projected from the recess at the outer face of the slot 16 in the jaw 12 as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings as distinguished from the dotted line position thereof shown in use as a pipe wrench. In this position, the device may be used for coupling pipe sections, or as a monkey wrench, since the jaw faces are parallel and will be maintained rigidly in this position against the action of the spring 41,7while still permitting adjustment thereof through the medium of the nut 20 so as to vary the degree of separation of the jaws. fact that the slot 16 is suiiiciently wide to permit considerable degree of pivotal movement of the shank or extension 36 of the pivoted movable jaw 37, thus accommodating pipes of different sizes and permitting the wrench to be adjusted quickly and conveniently by one hand. i
Having thus described the invention what I claim is:
1. A wrench of the class described comprising a handle having a shank. portion and a jaw in alinement with the handle, said shank having a slot therethrough at right angles to the face of said jaw, a movable jaw having a shank at right angles with respect thereto and extending through said slot, a block pivotally supporting said shank of the movable jaw whereby the latter may move in angular relation to the first-mentioned jaw, said block being engaged in the slot, spring means carried by Attention is also called to the said block and urging the movable jaw in jaw having an extension at right angles with respect thereto and movably mounted in the slot, a block slidably mounted in the slot and having apertured lugs pivotally supporting said movable jaw for' angular relation with respect to the first-mentioned jaw, a spring carried by said lug and urging said shank of the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw end of the slot whereby the face of the movable jaw will be disposed in rearwardly diverging relation to the jaw face of the stationary jaw, means for limiting the pivotal movement of the movable jaw, means carried by the stationary jaw and engageable with the shank of the movable j aw at the outer edge thereof for holding the movable jaw parallel to the stationary jaw or permitting the same to move in angular relation thereto under the action of said spring, said block having its opposite edge provided with worm threads, and a nut rotatably mounted in the head portion of the handle and engaged with said threads, whereby rotation of the nut will shift the block and the movable jawtransversely with respect to the stationary jaw within the slot, whereby the movable jaw will be adjusted toward and away from the stationary jaw. A combination pipe wrench, pipe coupling wrench and monkey wrench, comprising a handle having a slotted head portion with a jaw beyond said slot facing one edge of the handle, a movableijaw cooperating with the first-named jaw, said movable jaw having an extension at right angles with respect thereto and movably mounted in the slot, means engaged in said slot for pivotally supporting the movable jaw at the shank thereof whereby it may move in angular relation to the stationary jaw, means for adjusting the movable jaw transversely of the slot and at right angles to the handle, said stationary jaw having an aperture therethrough, and a pin rotatably mounted in said aperture and provided with a cut-out portion forming a half-round pin part adjacent thereto, said aperture projecting midway'into the wall of the slot at the stationary jaw to accommodate said; half-portion of the pin whereby the movable jaw shank may move in angular relation to the stationary j aw shank and adapted when turned to project into said slot to hold said movable jaw in fixed relation to the sta' tionary jaw. j

A combination pipe wrench, pipe coupling wrench and monkey wrench, comprising a handle having a slotted head portion and a jaw beyond said slot facing one edge of the handle, a movable jaw cooperating with the first-named jaw, said movable jaw having an expansion at right angles with respect thereto and movably mounted in the slot, means engaged in said slot for pivotally supporting the movable jaw at the.
shank thereof whereby it may move in angular relation to the stationary jaw, means for adjusting the movable jaw transversely of the slot and at right angles to the handle,
said stationary jaw having an aperture and provided with a cut-out portion forming a half-round pin part adjacent thereto, said aperture projecting midway into the wall of the slot at the stationary jaw to accommodate said half-portion of the pin whereby the movable jaw shank may move in angular relation to the stationary jaw shank and adapted when turned to project into said slot to hold said movable jaw in fixed relation tothe stationary jaw, spring means urging said movable jaw shank toward the stationary jawend of the slot and permitting limited opposite movement thereof, and means carried by the handle shank and cooperative with the movable jaw for adjusting the latter toward and away from the stationary jaw.
