Description

UNITED STATES JOHN CLANCY, 0F KENNER, LOUISIANA.
RAIL.
orass.
Application filed October 15, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN CLANCY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenner, in the parish of Jefferson and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Rail, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway rail joints, it being the primary object of the in vention to provide a novel connection be tween abutting ends of rails, whereby the strain usually directed thereto, will. be distributed. throughout the lengthsof the rails.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rail joint wherein ends will be interlocked to eliminate any possibility of lateral displacement between the sections.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of abutting rail ends disclosing a joint constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. at is a sectional view taken on line 47-4: of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, two abutting rail sections 5 and 6 are shown, each of which comprises the usual base 7, web 8, and tread 9.
In the construction of the present rail joint, the tread portion of the rail 5' is cut at an angle at approximately 45 as inclicated at 10, which cut extends. through the web 8 of the rail, terminating at a point in spaced relation with the base 7 thereof, the base being however cut at right angles to the web portion thereof as at 11, there being an angularly.;disposed out indicated at 12 formed on the opposite side of the base.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
Serial No. 417,221.
one side of the web portion thereof is cut at an angle corresponding to the angle-of the base of the opposed section, while the base on the opposite side of the web portion is cut to conform to the right angled cut of the opposed section.
From the foregoing it is obvious that when adjacent rail ends cut in a manner as de scribed, are brought together in abutting relation with each other, the sections will interlock to eliminate any possibility of lateral displacement thereof.
it might be further stated that the usual fish-plates are employed in connection with this joint for restricting movement of the abutting ends.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a scarf joint, rail sections, each of said rail sections having its base, portion cut at an oblique angle, the cut portion extending from one edge of the base of the rail and terminating at a point adjacent to the web thereof, said angular out merging into a relatively straight out, extending from the web to the opposite edge of the rail, the tread of the rail section having a diagonal cut in a direction opposite to the oblique cut in the base, the surfaces formed by the latter diagonal cuts cooperating to prevent lateral movement of one section with respect to the adjacent section.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN CLANOY.
