RAILWAY T-l-E.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 1. 1921.

' 1 ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES MARINO PAGE, OF HOMER CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAILWAY-TIE.
Application filed. September 1, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARINO Peon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Homer City, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties, of which. the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway ties of the class constructed wholly of metal and wherein the rails are held in place without the necessity for employing transverse bolts through the rails, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention:--
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in sec tion, of one of the improved ties with a pair of rails in transverse section mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of one of the improved ties with a portion of a rail mounted thereon.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one end of the body portion of one of the improved ties.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified construction of the tie, the rails being in section.
The improved tie comprises a body portion 10 of the usual length, about eight feet, and with an elevated intermediate portion 11, the ends of the-latter formed to bear over the inner parts of the flanges and against the inner faces of a pair of rails, represented as a whole at 13. The sides of the elevated portion 11 may be reduced as shown at 12, to reduce the weight, or left the full size, as shown in Fig. 5, as may be preferred.
The portions of the body 10 externally of the elevated portion 11 are provided respectively with guideways 14:, and bearing upon Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 13, 1921.
Serial No. 497,491.
the body at the sides of the guideways are holding members 15 and 16 having tongues 17 and 18 engaging in the guideways and secured in place by transverse bolts or pins 19 and 20. At their inner ends the members 15 and 16 conform to and are adapted to bear over the outer portions of the flanges and against the outer faces of the webs of the rails, as shown.
It will thus be seen that a very compact, strong and durable tie is produced whereby the rails are securely held in place without the necessity of employing transverse holding bolts through the webs of the rails or other like fastening devices.
The rail ends rest on the ties, and one rail end is provided with a clove-tailed recess, and the other end of the adjacent rail provided with a dove-tail lug or tongue to engage in the dove-tailed recess, and thus prevent longitudinal displacement of the rails.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A railway tie comprising a body member having rail seats and an elevated intermediate portion with the terminals thereof overhanging the inner portion of the rail seats and adapted to bear against the webs and over the adjacent portion of the flanges of the rails, the outer portions of said body having longitudinally directed upwardly opening guideways with the inner ends extending into the outer portion of the rail seats, holding members engaging in said guideways and extending at their inner ends beneath the outer portion of the rail flanges and each with a seat to receive the same and bearing against the outer faces of the rail webs.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
MARINO PAGE.
