Description
June 24 192 F. L. MUNSON TOOL Filed Oct. 26
Patented June 24, 1924,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
FRANK L. MUNSO'N, OF BERLIN, NEW] YORK; FREEMAN H. MUNSON ADMINISTRATOR 0F SAID FRANK L- MUNSON, DECEASED.
TOOL.
Application filed October 26, 1918. Serial No. 259,840.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. MUNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berlin, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in tools, and more particularly to means for fastening the handle of the tool to the shank portion thereof.
A further objectof the invention is to provide means of the character described, which are easy to apply, neat in appearance and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in whichlike numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.
Figure l is a plan view of my improved fastening device applied to the handle of a screwdriver, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same, parts thereof being shown in section.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a screwdriver, having'a reduced shank portion 6. Extended over the shank portion 6 is a handle 7, which may be formed of a pair of scales 7 disposed in side openings 17 of a frame 17.
The scales 7 are provided with opposed conical shaped recesses 8, adapted for the reception of conical shaped retaining or wear elements 9. The conical shaped retaining elements 9 are provided with centrally disposed openings 10, adapted for the reception of screws 11. The retaining elements receiving the threaded ends of the screws are interiorly screw-threaded for engagement therewith. These retaining elements are provided with conical shapedre 7 thus permitting of the heads 14 to lie flush with the handle. The portions of the handle 7 surrounding the conical shaped recesses 8 are countersunk for the reception of annular flanges 15, carried by the retaining elements 9.
' In applying my improved retaining device to a handle, it will be apparent that the handle is first provided with the conical shaped recesses 8 and the countersunk portions surrounding the conical shaped recesses. The retaining elements 9 are positioned in the conical shaped recesses 8, and the screws 11 engaged therewith.
As clearly shown in Figure 2, the screws 11 may be of a greater length than the width of the handle, and are adapted to be severed flush with the outer face of the retaining elev ments upon their application to a handle.
It is understood of course that I may make my improved handle fastener for tools in various sizes and also of any desired ma.- t-erial, which in the manufacture of the device I may find the best adapted to the conditions.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A handle consisting of a frame to receive an attaching shank of a tool, said frame having opposite side openings, scales disposed snugly in said openings enclosed by and incontact with the frame at the mar- In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1n presence of two wltnesses.
