ARTHUR N. CROSS, OE MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK.
ARTIFICIAL Toorn.
i Application led .Tune 1,
T all whom t lmay concern.' y
` Be it known that l, ARTHUR N. Cnoss,y a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of llestchester and Statev of New York, have invented cer-- tain new and useful Improvements in Sirtiicial Teeth, of which the following is a specification. i
o My invention relates to artificial teeth and its objects are to provide an artificial tooth having means for locking the facing to the backing-against relative movement in any and all directions so that a separation of the facing from .the backing by pressure from any direction is practically impossible.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, l attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure l is a central section through a toothV constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure Q a section on line 2 2 of Figure l,
Figure 3 a perspective view of the tooth facing shown in Figure l, and
Figure et a perspective view of the bacltinoshown in Figure l.
teferring to the drawing, 1 indicates an artificial tooth composed of a facing 2 secured to a backing 8 by cement d or the like.
The facing 2, which may be made in to any suit-able shape and of any suitable white material, preferably porcelain, has a flat rear surface 5 provided with a vertical groove 6,
' a horizontally7 extending cavity 7 in the groove and a downwardly inclined rectangular cavity 8 at the lower end of the groove as shown in Figure 3.
The backing 3, preferably metallic, consists of a plate 9 having a vertical rib l0 adapted to fit into the vertical groove 6, a locking pin ll projecting horizontally from rib l0 adapted to fit into the horizontally eX- tending cavity 7, and a tongue 12 inclining downwardly from the bottom of rib l0 adapted to fit into the downwardly inclined cavity 8.
Rib l() may be made integral with the plate or pressed therefrom as shown in Figure 4. Pin l1 is secured to the rib in any suitable manner such as by soldering, brazing or otherwise. The inclined tongue 12 raza semi No, 642,742.
is secureduto plate 9 at the lower end of groove 6 by soldering or brazing. The cavities 7 and t3 are made slightly larger than the pin il and tongue l2, which theyreceive, so that the facingL` may be easily applied to the backing without any binding action between the cavities and the pin and tongue.
When applying the facing 2 to the baci;- ing 3, the surface o of the facing is coated and the cavities filled in with cement l. The facing is first heldin the position shown in dot-and-dash lines in Figure l, then slipped up into the position shown in full lines so that .Tl
the vertical groove 6, horizontal cavity 7 and inclined cavity 8 will receive the vertical rib l0, the horizontally projecting locking pin ll and the inclined tongue 1Q, respectively. The cavities T and 8, being slightly larger than the pin and tongue, readily permit this movement of the facing from the dot-anddash line position to the full line position of Figure l. The cement, filling the space left in the cavities and being between the surface 5 and plate 9,securely holds the facing to the plate.
In use, the rib l0 and the inclined tongue 12Y prevent upward, lateral and turning movement of the facing 2 relatively to the backing 3 while the pin ll locks the facing to the tongue l2 and the rib l0 by preventing downward movement of the facing relatively to the backing. p
By constructing a tooth as above described, it is practically impossible to disconnect or separate the facing from the backing by pressure from any direction.
While have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence l do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that l am at liberty to malte such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. An artificial tooth including a backing having a vertical rib and a horizontal pin projecting from the rib; facing having corresponding cavities for receiving the rib and pin, and means for securing the facing to the backing.
2. An artificial tooth including a backing having n vertical ril), :i horizontally projecting pin and a downwardly inelined tongue; n Yfacing having corresponding cavities for receiving the rib7 pin and tongue7 and means for securing the 'facing to the backing.
3. n artificial tooth including n hacking having n vertical rib, a horizontal pin pro jeeting :from the rib und i downwardly inclined tongue zit the bottom of the rib; a lacing havingcorresponding cavities' for receiving the ril),` pin and tongue, and ineens for securing the inning tothe hacking.
An artificiel tooth including ai facing having a groove :1nd e horizontal lcavityV eX- tending from the groove; a backing having n rib and n horizontal pin adapted to tale into the groove and cavity, and means for securing the lacing to the hookingl 5. An artificial tooth including e facing having a` vertical rih. :i horizontal pin proe jecting from the rib and :11 downwardly inclined tongue :it the bottoni of therib; si
25 facing `hau/'ing a vertical groove5 a horizontal cavity extending from the groove and a downwardly inclined cavity at the end oi the groove for receiving the rib, pin and tongue, and means for securing the facing to the backing.
t5. An artihcinl tooth including a backing having :i vertical rih, u horizontal pin projecting from the rih and u downwardly in- `clined tongue at the hottoin of the rib; a
facing having zi groove 'for receiving the rilo7 an inwardly extending cavity for re"- ceiving the pin, the cavity being of 'lrger dimension than the pin, and n downwardly inclined cavity at the end of vthe' groove for receiving the tongue, the inclined cavity heing of lnrgerdiinension than the tongue, and ineens for securing` the facing to the backing.
.ln testimony whereof I have signed my naine to Lthis specification 'in' the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
