Be it known that I, WALTER It. MONTGOM- ERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented'a` new and useful IV heel Attachment, of which the following is a specification.'
This invention relatesy to an attachment 'for the wheels of motor vehicles, one 'of the objects being to provide a simple and Compact device adapted to be quickly and firmly, attached to a wheel so thatloy connecting` thereto one end of an anchored cable .orthe like the vehicle can be pulled out of mud holes, sand, etc., under its own power.
Another object is toV provide an attach` ment which will not scar the wheel and which, when not in use, can be `storedina small space. y f
Another object is to provide a device of this character which can bequickly applied and removed, is formed of but fewv parts, and will not readily get out oforder.
' With the rforegoing and other objects in view which will appear as Vthe description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of constructionl and combina-J tion of parts which will be hereinafter morek fully described and pointed out ,in 'the' Figure 2 is an elevation of the attachment v showing the inner side thereof.

Slidably mounted in 'each groove'orchan-` nel 6 is a slide`p13- the sidesmof which are beveled and are adapted to it snugly against the inclined walls 7 of the` grooves or'chan nels 6. Each'of these slides have a longitudinal slot 14 and reinforcing ribs 15 are formed along thesides of the slides. The inner ends of the slides are recessed as at 16 thus to `clear the hub ofthe wheel W. The outer end of each 'slide has anarm 17 extending atfright angles therefrom and formed on thisarml is a wedge block 18 the" convergingside faces 'of whichv are formed with rounded recesses 19. i Y

In .using this device "the Vbolts" 9 are loosenedand'the slides 13 are moved outwardly so asvto' allow theblocks 18 lto be' inserted between certain of the spokes ofthe wheel.; 'Ihefdrum lis placed concentric the adjacent spokes are seated snugly within the recesses 19. The bolts are then tightened by means of the nuts 10 `and as the angular portions 12 of the stems are seated in the slots 14k the bolts cannot rotate. Cable 21 is connected to the lug 2O and by then ro- .tating the wheel` W the cable will be wound on thev drum.- As the cable is to be anchored at its outer end this winding thereof will "result inthe wheel being pulled forward out ywith the hub of thefw'heel and the blocks vlare then adjusted 4toward each other until stem of the bolt along curved lines. VThus by placing the bolt between two spokes of a wheel and tightening it by means of a nut 27 the rounded surface of the head will'fit snugly against the spokes without marring them. y This form of attachment is designed for use primarily on the wheels of the Vwell known Ford automobile. It will be noted that. a recess 28 is providedl at the inner end of the drum for the purpose of receiving the bolt heads and clamp plate of the wheel hub, thereby allowing the arms 22 to yrest close to the spokes.
This modified structure is provided with a forked lug 29 similar to the lug 20 and adapted to receive the end of a cable 30.
Attention is, called to the fact that the laterally extendingarms 17 serve to hold the attachment shown in Figures l, `2 and 3, laterally away from the wheell so that said attachment will not come against the bolt heads and the clamp plate of the wheel hub.`
By providing the drums with the enlarged inner end portions, the cable, while in use, will be held laterally away from the machine so as not to contact with the fender.
',Ihe rounded tapered head 26 acts as a wedge when bolt 25 is tightened (see Figure 6) and, because'of the peculiar shape of this head the spokes will not be marred.
What is `claimed is:
l. An attachment for automobile wheels comprising aV drum, cable engaging means V extending therefrom, radial arms at one 'end of the druin,rmeans slidable longitudinally including a drum, radial Varms extending,
from one end of the drum, there being longitudinal grooves within the arms having inclined walls, slides adjustable within the grooves and having Vbeveled sides, means for clamping the slides to the arms to bind said beveled sides upon the inclined walls of the.
grooves, and wedging devices carried by the slides for insertion between the spokesof a wheel, there lbeing opposed spoke receiving recesses within the wedging devices.
4. An attachment for automobile wheels including a drum, radial arms extending from 'one end of the drum, there being longitudinal grooves Within the arms, slides ad-V justable within the grooves, means for clamping the slides in the grooves, arms extending at angles from the'slides, and wedging blocks upon the arms having Vopposed rounded spoke receiving recesses.
