UNITED STATES EDWARD H. SICHEL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SAFETY RAZOR. 0
Application filed May 29, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. SICHEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Razors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to safety razors of the type designed for carrying removable and replaceable blades.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a simply constructed and durable safety razor including few parts which are so arranged and associated with one another as to facilitate the removal and replacement of the razor blade.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a safety razor, the head of which is provided with means for conveying the lather removed from the face to the opposite side of the head from the blade so as to prevent it interfering with the shaving operation.
These objects are accomplished by form ing a rectangular head, one edge of which is beveled and the other curved, cutting in said rectangular head a longitudinal slot, forming in the front portion of said head a plurality of grooves leading to the slot, associating with the head a clamping member having a beveled face corresponding to the beveled edge of the head, and a depending lip for engaging any blade mounted on the head, attaching the clamping member to the head by means of a screw so mounted that it may be used for moving the clamping member diagonally of the head, and fixing to the head a handle that extends at an angle to the former.
These and other objects of the invention will be more clearly understood from the following detailed description and accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the razor assembled;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the razor assembled with a portion cut away to show its construction;
Figure 3 is a vertical cross section showing the construction of the razor.
Referring to the above-mentioned drawings, the invention includes a handle 10 to which a rectangular head 11 is fixed slightly out of alinement with the former. The rec- Serial No. 642,299.
t-angular head 11 is formed with a curved front edge 12 and a beveled rear edge 13. Cut in the head and extending longitudinally of it near the front edge is a slot 14. The wall 15 of the razor defining the front of this slot is inclined. Formed in the front portion of the head and leading to the slot 14 are a plurality of grooves 16. These grooves may be made of varying sizes or of one size. 'A blade 17 is mounted on the top of the head and the cutting edge extends over the grooves 16. This blade is positioned on the head by means of a shoulder 18 formed on the base of the head.
A clamping member 19 is constructed with a beveled face 20 corresponding to the beveled edge 18 of the head. Formed integral with this clamping member is a depending lip 24 which when the clamping member is in position overlaps the top side of the head and the end. An opening 22 is formed in the clamping member through which a screw 23 is projected. This screw 23 engages in a threaded opening 21 provided in the head. An examination of Figure 3 shows that in providing the threaded opening 21 in the head it is inclined at an angle to the plane of the head so that by operation of the screw the clamping member 19 may be moved diagonally of the head.
In the preferred construction of the head the top forward of the shoulder 18 is beveled, giving the forward portion the appearance of the top portion of a wedge. When the head is constructed in this man ner the blade 17 is also inclined and the lip 24 would be constructed so as to firmly position the blade parallel to the top face of the head.
In assembling this razor, the blade 17 is positioned on the top of the head with the cutting edge properly located relative to the groove 16. The shoulder 18 serves as a guide in properly positioning the blade. After the blade has been positioned the clamping member 19 is adjusted by means of the screw 23, carrying the lip 24 against the blade 17, clamping it firmly in position on the head. The handle 10 being slightly out of alinement with the head 11 gives the razor a desirable shape for shaving. When the razor has been drawn over the face, removing a certain amount of the lather, the latter passes through the grooves into the slot 14 and through the slot 14 to the opposite side,v of the razor head from the blade.
The lather may be easily washed from the head 11 by holding it under a faucet. Since the razor includes so few parts it may be easily Washed after the shaving operation has been completed.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein of grooves out in its front portion leading to the slot, means formed on the head for receiving a blade, and means mounted on the beveled face for engaging a blade mounted on the head and drawing it tightly against the latter.
2. In a safety razor including a flat rectangular head having a beveled edge and a blade for positioning on said flat rectangular head, means for clamping the blade in position on the head comprising a clamping member having a beveled face for seating on the beveled face of the head and a depending lip for engaging the blade, and means for moving the clamping member diagonally of the head to clamp the blade firmly on the head,
EDVARD H. SICHEL.
