DRAWING APPLIANCE Filed Sept. '7, 1922 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented June 10, 1924.
HUGO C. KAY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
DRAWING APPLIANCE.
Application filed September 7, 1922. Serial No. 586,728.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUoo C. KAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio. have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Drawing Appliances; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, c ear. and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to a drawin appliance, whereby objects may be copie with ease and accuracy either on the same or at a different scale either enlarged or re duced as required.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings Forming a part of the application,
Figure l is a front view of an appliance of the nature s ated embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a side view thereof.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the bracket which may be applied to either side of the board.
Figure 4 is a rear view of the board in perspective.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the pantograph, and
Figure 6 is a detail view of the holder for the marker.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and desig nated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates a board to which is fitted a frame 2 for reinforcement and to provide a case. One side of the board 1 is coated to present a slate surface for outlin ing thereon with chalk or crayon.
A bracket is fitted to an end of the board and comprises a base 3 and'stem 4, the latter being provided with a plurality of threaded openings 5 for adjustable connection therewith of the pantograph. Pins 6 project laterally from the base 3 and are adapted to enter openings formed in the frame of the board. This bracket may be applied to either side of the board as may be required and for this purpose the openings 7 adapted to receive the pins 6 extend laterally through the board from one side to the other. The arm 4 projects outwardly from the board practically in the plane thereof and a screw 8 is adapted to be fitted in any one of the openings 5 for adjustably connecting the pantograph thereto.
Legs 9 are attached at one end to an end of the board 1 by means of links 10 and these links are pivoted in openings 11 formed in an edge of the board so that the legs may be turned from one side to the other of the board to support the latter with the required surface outermost for use. Short chains 12 or flexible connections are interposed between the legs 9 and board and limit the spread of the legs and board in either ad justed position.
The pantograph comprises four links 13 which are arranged substantially in the form of a parallelogram and which are pivotally and adjustably connected. The screw 8 forms the pivot of the pantograph and the link pivoted to the link provided with the screw 8 is adapted to receive the tracin point or marker according to the required size of the drawing. The holder 14 adapted to receive a pencil or a piece of chalk, crayon or the like. is adjustable on the link to which it is fitted. An end of the holder 14 is provided with a dovetail recess 15 to receive a correspondingly shaped. portion of the link whereby to secure the holder by a wedging action. The links preferably consist of metal strips or bars provided at regular intervals in their lengths with threaded openings 16 to receive screws 17 whereby the links are pivotally and adjustably connected in the required position. Each of the links is provided with a corresponding number of openings in like position and these openings are consecutively numbered. whereby to facilitate the adjustment of the links when adapting the instrument for a particular use. The tracing point 18 and holder 14: for the marker are adapted to be interchanged according to the size of the drawing to be reproduced, and the pantograph may be applied to either side of the board and the lat ter is adapted for use as an easel and the drawing may be reproduced in chalk upon the slate surface of the board or in pencil upon a sheet of paper applied to the oppositeside of the board. If (leafed: however, the board may be arranged upb'n a fiat surface such as a table or desk.
What is claimed is:
1. A drawing appliance comprising a board having lateral openings in a marginal portion thereof, an instrument attaching bracket applicable to either side of the board and proyided with ofistanding pins to enter the lateral openings of the board in either position of the bracket with reference thereto. 7
2. A drawing appliance comprising a board having openings in an edge ortion thereof, reversible legs, links pivotal y connecting the legs to the board and adapted to rest in the openings in the edge thereof in either position of the legs, and flexible connections between the legs and board.
3. A drawing appliance comprising a board having lateral openings in a marginal portion a bracket applicable to either side of the board comprising a base and an instrument attaching arm extending from the base, the base having offstanding pins to enter the lateral openings of the board in either adjusted position of the bracket.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
