Description

June 3 1924.-
G. H. BEGEHR FUSE PLUG Filed March 30. 1921 Patented June 3, 1924.
UNITED STATES GEORGE E. BEGEH R, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FUSE PLUG.
Application filed March 30, 1921. Serial No 456,929.
To all whom it may concern;
Be i known that I, GEORGE H. BEGEHR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuse Plugs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
. This invention relates to improvements in renewable fuse plugs.
In fuse plugs commonly in use, it is necessary, when the fuse is blown, to physically remove the entire plug from the fuse box to inspect it before ascertaining whether one has removed the blown fuse plug or a plug that has not been blown, fuse plugs being generally used in quantities. This entails a great deal of time and annoyance. Moreover, when the damaged plug has been found, it is necessary to insert a new plug in its place and to send the damaged plug to a factory to be renewed.
One of therobjects of my invention is to produce a plug with a slip-joint removable head, which may be readily detached from the plug so as toreveal the inside thereof, and enable the electrician to determine at a glance whether or not the fuse of that particular plug has been blown. If so, then that plug may be removed; otherwise, the slipjoint head is instantly returned to its place, and the same operation repeated until the damaged plug is found.
Another object of the invention is to enablethe electrician to renew this blown plug on the job by inserting a new piece of fuse wire therein, thus very greatly lessening the cost to the operator of the plant and efl'ecting a great saving of time.
Another object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient fuse plug of the character described, and one which will not readily get out of order or require any expert skill to operate or to renew.
To the attainment of the foregoing objects, the invention consists in the devices and combinations ofdevices herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the drawings:
' Fig. 1 illustrates in a side elevation, a fuse plug embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the plug, with the head removed.
Fig. 3 is' a transverse sectional view,- taken in the plane indicated by the dotted line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an inside plan view of the cover member, removed.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the metallic contact plug. 7
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the tubular socket member. In said drawings, A is the renewable fuse plug, as a whole, comprising a cylindrical body 1 of hard rubber or other insulating material, exteriorly screw threaded at 2, having a flanged head 3, and a central recess 1, the latter being adapted to be covered by a removable member 5. Recesses 6 in the head 3 and projections 7 on the cover member 5 provide the familiar slip-joint or friction means for interlocking and separating the cover member 5 and the head member 3. The screw threaded body 1 is provided with a. metallic conductor sleeve 8. A pin 9, having a head 10, is passed through a suitable aperture in the body 1 and projects radially into the recess 4. The head 9 is rounded to conform to the curvature of the screw' threads and the sleeve 8 holds the pin 9 in position, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The free end of the pin 9 is provided with an elongated slot 11 adapted to receive and hold one end of a fuse wire 12.
13 is a tubular socket member, secured by screw threads or other suitable means, in one end of the body 1. A metallic contact plug 14, having a flanged head 15, is inserted in the bore of the socket member 13. Its inner end is somewhat tapered at 16. It is provided with a central recess 17, adapted to receive the fuse wire 12 and it is also provided with one or more longitudinal slits 18, so that said tapered end is compressible.
The socket member 13 is hollow, to receive the plug 14, and its inner end is tapered complementally to the tapered end 16 of the plug. Therefore, when the plug 14 is inserted in the socket 13, the tapered end of the plug is contracted so as to grip or look about the end of the fuse wire 12 and support it in proper position.
When the fuse is blown, the insertion of a fresh fuse wire requires but a moments time, when the plug as a whole may be again used. The advantages are obvious.
I claim as my invention:
1. A renewable fuse plug comprising a recessed tubular body member,- a removable cap member, a metal sleeve mounted upon the body, a metal pin onthe body in contact with said sleeve andv projecting into the recess of the body member, a contact plug in the end of the body member, a fuse wire connecting the plug and the'pin, a tu bular socket member in the body member surrounding said plug and having an inner tapered wall, the contact plug being pro vided with a conical exterior surface on one end to engage the tapered wall of the socket V and being split longitudinallyto form 1: .silient gripping means for the end of the fuse wire. V ,2. The renewable fuse plug described, comprising a hollow, cylindrical, exteriorly screw threaded body member of insulating end of the body being tapered and centrally .aper-tured, a metallic pin extending through L the body member radially and held in po sition by the screw thread of said sleeve, a
cylindrical tubular sleeve centrally secured ,in the tapered end of the body, a cont-act plug removably secured insaid sleeve, means for securing the endsof a fuse wire, one to the contact pin and the other to the vplug. 3. The renewable fuse Aplug described,
comprising a hollow, cylindrical, exteriorly screw threaded body member of insulating material, a flanged head thereon centrally apertured to afford communication with the interiorof thebod'y, a metallic sleeve member'upon the screw threaded portion of the body, a cap member having removable connection. with. the body member, the other end of the body being tapered and centrally apertured, a metallic pin extending through the body member radially and held .in position by the screw thread of said sleeve, a cylindrical tubular sleeve centrally secured in thetapered end of the body,.
a contact plu removably secured in said sleeve, means or securing the ends of a fuse wire, one to the contact pin and the other to the plug, sald securing means lncluding longitudinal slits extending part way into thecontact plugfrom its free end, and cooperative means between said plug and its surrounding sleeve whereby the slitted end of the plug is clamped to one end of the fuse wire. i
