To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SIEVEL CHAKov, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State'of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Handle, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a handle, such'as is used on traveling bags, suit cases orsimilar con-- tainers, and has for its Object to provide a ring holding cap at each end of the handle which isconnected with the stifl'ening'wire of the handle through the mediumof the ring or the equivalent thereof such as a rivet.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a new and improved construction of the hand hold portion wherebythe amountof material used in the covering is reduced approximately fifty per 'centover present day methods of manufacture.

Fig. 10, is a'transverse sectional view, of a still" different formation"ofhand hold 7 portion. v V V In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents the hand hold portion of a handle constructed in accordance with myi'nvention and maybe of any desirable sizeor shape, twodiflierent' styles of which are shown'in Figs. 1 and 2 for convenience of illustration.

Within the hand hold portion is embedded a stiffening wire 3 which follows. the general contour of the hand hold portion with the'ends of said stiffening" wire projecting beyond the ends of the handheld portion, as plainly shown, and each of these projecting ends has an eye or loop l formed therefrom. Onthe ends of the hand hold portions are placed the caps 5 which enclose thefprojectin'g ends of the stiffening wire as'well order to fasten the caps to the stiffening wire so as to provide a rigid construction a rivet 6, as shown 'at theright hand side of Fig. 1 and in Fig.2, ispassed through the walls of a cap and the eye 4 of the stiffening wire or as shownat the left hand side of Fig; 1, in lieu of said rivet the ring? may be passed through the walls of the cap and an eye of the'stiifening wire. In forming the hand holdportion I first tightly wrap a triangular shaped sheet of paper or other suitable materialS about the stiffening wire 3 so as to produce the filler 9, shown inFig. 4', which is therefore thick-' erYat its central portion and gradually tapers toward each end, To this filler is then attached-a shapervlO of stiff cardboard or the like by means of the tacks 11 or equivalent fastening devices. These parts are then' laid upon the cover 12 of leather or other suitable material with the liller andits embedded; stiffening wire interposed between the shaper 10 and the cover 12, The cover is then foldedabout or over the filler =9 and the shaper 10 with the edges ofsaid cover overlapping and thetacksll are next r,e-, moved, one at a time,and thenreplacedso that they pass" through the overlapping edges of the cover, the shaper. and-into the filler,-as shown in Fig 5. The cover being shapedfabout the filler and shaper, as shown in Fig. 6, is next stitched to the shaper close into the filler, as shown in Fig. 6, said stitches being represented by the numeral13. The cover preferably had an adhesiveaplied to the inner surfacethereof prior; to being folded about the filler and shaper. and the parts;being wet the side edgesofthe shaper are pressed or bent up so as to conform to the contour ofthe filler thereby completing the hand hold portion, as shown; in Fig. 7, andafter being thus bentv in shape it. is maintained in this position until: the parts are thoroughly dried; causing said hand hold portion'to retain its shape. The formation show n' v Fig, 10 consists of the stiffening wire 3 with the filler 9 thereon and the cover 12 folded about the filler with the meeting edges of said cover stitched together, as at 14, after which the cover and filler are flattened across one diameter so asto give an elliptical or other cross sectional shape to the hand hold portion. This formationeliminatesthe shaper.
