Description

May 27 1924. 1,495,554
W. A. FELLOWES CLOSURE FASTENER FOR BOXES Filed Dec. 22 1922 Patented May 27, 1924.
WALTER A. FELLOWES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CLOSURE FASTENER FOR BOXES.
Application filed December 22, 1922.
T0 c/.ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVALTEP. A. FELLOWES, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Closure Fasteners for Boxes, of which the following` is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in closure fasteners for boxes and has for its primary object the provision of a novel and improved fastening` means which obvia-tes the necessity of the use of string or tape.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fastening expedient which may be quickly applied to boxes of various constructions and materials, such expedient being very simple, inexpensive of manufacture. and highly eiiicient in operation.
lVit-h the above and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention comprises certain novel features of construction and arrangement to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box illustrating the application of my improved closure fastener thereto;
F ig. 2 is a cross-section through the box and one of the fasteners, and
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the fastening elements removed.
Referring specifically to the drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, like reference characters designating like parts throughout the several views, numeral 5 denotes a box of cardboard, metal or any other suitable material, which in this instance is formed of cardboard having a pair of longitudinal flaps 6 and end flaps 7. In Figure l of the drawing the box is shown closed, the two longitudinal flaps being folded down over the end flaps 7.
Coming now to the closure fastening means which is the subject matter of my invention, it will be noted that the box is Serial No. 608,523.
provided with pairs of opposed studs S extending` transversely through the side walls of the box from the outside thereof, these studs being provided with enlarged bases 8PL resting against the inside of the box wall. The forward portions of the studs 8 extend through the walls of the box and are re ceived in apertures 11 in the opposed laterally bent ends 1() of a spring metal fastening clip 9 which is fitted down snugly against the closed flaps 6.
From the foregoing description read in connection with the accompanying drawino', the application of my invention will be readily understood. In applying the clips 9 it is only necessary to press them down upon the top of the box and clip the studs 8 in the apertures 11. This construction obviates the use of string and the consequent loss of time in tying the same. Also when string is used to tie boxes there is a temptation to carry the same thereby. which frequently results in its breaking and the spilling of the contents of the box.
Various changes in the specific details and arrangement of the parts may be made within the spirit of the invent-ion, the scope of which is defined by the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a box having a closure, of a 'U-shaped fastener formed from a single length of spring metal and having a bight portion extending across and flatly contacting with said closure to hold the l same in position, said 'U-shaped body having sides flatly contacting with the sides of said box and having their terminal portions arranged between the upper and lower sides of the box and formed with apertures, and pins carried by the sides of the box and adapted to be received in said apertures whereby to hold the U-shaped body securely in position, said side of the ll-shaped body being freely removable from said pins whereby the U-shaped body may be quickly detached.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WALTER A. FELLOIVES.
