Be it known that I, FRANCIS 0. HELTZEL,
a citizen of United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concrete Forms, of whichy the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.` The present invention relates to concrete forms, and more particularly to road forms using rails for defining the edges of a concrete road, sidewalk, or the like.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a novel stake receiving member carried by the rail.
Another object is the provision of a novel and improved device for holding in place the adjacent ends of the rails and clamping fthem together in abutment, whereby to maintain such rails in alinement and to support the ends thereof against depression under the weight of a road yfinishing machine lor other apparatus run on the rails.
Another object is to provide such a devicev for obtaining a secure and rigid joint between the rail ends, whereby to prevent the separation of the rails, as well as the lateral or vertical displacement thereof, and which will enable the rails to be conveniently moved laterally into and out of, position when disconnected.
A further object is the provision of such a rail joint which utilizes a stake as a part thereof, for securing the rails together, and to also hold the rail ends in place on the gound when the stake is driven down into ace.
A still further object is the provision of such a rail joint including a slip joint connection between the rail ends of such a kind that the rails can be assembled and separated by a lateral movement thereof, and means being provided for clamping the rail-sections together when assembled.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be understood as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can bemade within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

1n carrying out the present invention, the rail ends are'rigidly secured together, and, for this purpose, a longitudinally slidable latch 14 is provided at one end of each rail and is slidable in a U-shaped'guide 15. Said guide has feet 16 at its ends extending awayv from one another and riveted or otherwisev secured to the, web 11 of the rail near the corresponding end thereof between the- 13. rlhe latch 14 is of U- shaped section, and has the web 17 bearing against the web 11 of the rail and the outwardly projecting flanges 18 bearing against the arms of the guide 1-5 with the edges of the flanges slidably abutting the intermediate or yoke portion of said guide. rlhev flanges 18 have outwardly extending stop lugs 19l at their inner ends to strike the flanges 12 and the guide when the latch is projected, and thus limit the projection of the latch. This provides a slip-joint connec= tion between the rails, and when the rails are laid end to end, the latches are readilyv projected into the sockets of the companion rails, to maintain the rail ends in alinement, and to support the rail ends against depression or relative lateral or vertical displacement.
The socket member 21 is provided in the arms thereof adjacent to the yoke or intermediate portion with apertures 23 tor receiving` a stake 2d, which is preferably ot Thus, the stake 2d can be driven down through the member 21, which also forms a stake socket, for anchoring the rail ends in place on the ground. This stake also forms a part of the joint for clamping the rail ends together. Thus, the lugs 20 ot the latch have notches 25 to register with the apertures'23 of the latch and stake socket member 21 when the latch is projected intothe socket with the lugs 19 contacting with the guide member 15, as seen in Fig. 2. Then, when the stake 24C is driven down through the apertures 23 it engages in the notches 25 and the latch is drawn tightly into place in the member 21, thereby clamping the rail ends together tightly in abutment. Asa result, the joint is made perfectly rigid and secure, and is also anchored to the ground by means of the stake. llt is preferable to have a set screw 26 in the yoke or intermediate portion of the socket member 21 to bear against the stake and clamp the parts together against accidental loosening or separation. llt is therefore apparent that when the rails are laid end to end, the latches can be conven iently projectedintothe latch sockets, and the stakes 2d then driven down through the members. 21tor making the joints rigid and anchoring them to theground. lln taking the railsup, the set screws 26 are loosened and the stakes 24 Withdrawn, which permit the latches to be retracted and the rails then removed laterally from place.
Each rail also has a stakesocket between ari-eases the ends thereof including a [Ll-shaped inemthe intermediate portion ot the rail to be anehored in place on the ground. As shown, the stakes 24 and 31 contact with or bear against the edges oit the lower tlange 12 of the rails.
Sometimes it is desired or required to use superposed rails, such as shown in llig. 5, wherein there are upper rails seatedon the lower rails for increasing the height ot the term. The danges 12 and 13 of the rails are therefore provided with ,apertures or bolt holes 32 at suitably spaced points from the ends and intermediate the ends, so tha when the rails are seated one on the other, bolts 33 or other tastening'means can be inserted through the registering apertures tor clamping the upper and lower rails together with the lower danges 12 ot the upper rails secured on the upper flanges 13 ot the lower Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:-
1. A. concrete form comprising rails to be disposed end to end, and members carried by the adjacent ends oisaid rails adapted to have a slip connection for holding the rails in alinement, one ot said members hat7H ing an opening tor receiving a member to lock the parts together.
2. A concrete form comprising rails to be disposed 'end to end, and members carried bythe adjacent vend' portions ot said rails and adapted to have a slip connection for retaining the rails in alinement, said members having portions for receiving a member driven between them and so arrangedthat lsaid member holds the rail ends together tightly.

A concrete form comprising rails disposed end to end, a U-shaped guide member having its terminals secured to one rail, a latch slidable in said guide havin a web adjacent to the web of said rail and flanges projecting away from said rail and slidably engaging the yoke portion of said member, and a socket member carried by the other vrail to. receive said latch.
6. A concrete form comprising railsdis- I `posed end to end, a U-shaped guide member aving its terminals secured to one rail, a latch slidable in said guide having a web adjacent to the web of said rail and flanges projecting away from said rail and slidably engaging the yoke portion lor said member, and a socket member carried by the other rail to receive said latch,said anges having lugs to contact with said guide memberlfor limiting the movement of the latch.
7. A concrete form comprising rails disposed end to end and having portions to it together with a slip joint for holding the rails in alinement, and means engageable withgsaid portions by movement relatively to the rails for retaining the rails in abutment.

' and a stake cooperable with said joint for retaining the rails in abutment and to enter the ground for anchoring tle rails in place. 9. A concrete form comprising rails disposed end to end, and means for securing the rails end to end including a stake adapted to be driven into place relatively to the rails to first secure the rails together and then enter the ground.
10. A concrete form comprising rails disposed end to end, and means for securing the rails together having portions arranged to receive a stake when the rails have been brought together end to end so that the stake can be driven into the ground by movement relatively to the rails, said portions being so arranged that the stake assists infholding the rails together.
11. A concrete form comprising rails to be disposed end to end, a socket member carried by one rail, a member carried by the other rail to enter said socket member, said members having means for receiving a stake driven into the ground.
