Be it known that I, BERNARD GERLA, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie Clasps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to necktie clips such as are commonly used to secure the ends of a four in hand tie to the shirt, to hold the said ends neatly in position.

The invention has for an object the provision of a novel form of tie clip which will be invisible, or substantially so, when in use, and which can be manufactured at a very small cost.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 of the drawings is a perspective view showing one form of my improved tie clip.

Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are like views showing different forms of the clip.

In constructing my improved necktie clip I make use of a single length of wire suitably bent so that it may properly grip the two ends of the tie, the end that lies outermost when the tie is in place being gripped on the underside through the medium of the backturned marginal port-ion or flap which is commonly left on the tie end.

In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing the Wire is bent to form two main parallel reaches 10 and 11 which unite with one another at one end as at 12 while at the opposite end of the part 10 the wire is turned back beside the part 11 and then doubled forward along the part 10 to form a second pair of parallel reaches 18 and 14, the uniting point 15 of these inner reaches being spaced some distance from the point 12. The reach 14 is finally bent backward on itself in a plane at right angles to the main plane of the clip as at 17. this member 17 being bowed inwardly as shown so as to press against the element 10. The free end of the part 11 is given a turn around the part 10 at the point where the latter is bent back to form the inner clip element and may be curled into the form of an ornamental tip 18.

In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 2 the elements 10 and 11 are the same as in Fig. 1 but in this construction both of the reaches 13 and 14' forming the inner clip element are bent in the form of a J this construction the inner reaches13 and 14 are bent to form an oval loop 25 which extends over the parts 10 and 11, while at the centre of this loop the wire is bent forward in doubled formation as at 26 and near its forward end each part thereof is bent laterally to form a cross-piece 27 which rests on the main reaches 10, 11 while the extreme tip of this forwardly thrust portion is bent outward from the main body of the clip as at 28 for ready insertion of the flap on the outer tie end. This'clip as will be understood, grips the outer tie end in the same manner as the one shown in Fig. 2.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the reaches 10 and 11, 13 and 14, are again the same, but in this construction the reach 14 is turned outwardly at right angles to the general plane of the clip as at 30 and then transversely across the clip as at 31 and upon this transverse member is hinged a clip 32 adapted to grip the outer tie end This clip 32 is hinged between its ends, by means of suitable lugs such as 34 thereon. and is pressed at one end against the reaches 10 and 14 by a spring 35, the opposite end serving as a thumb-piece by depression of which the clip is opened.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:

1. A tie clip comprising an integral elongated member comprising a pair of jaw elements connected together at one end. and between which the inner tie end is adapted to be gripped, one of said jaw elements being confined within the other, and a backturned gripping member projected from the said end of the inner jaw element and adapted to grip the outer tie end.

2. A tie clip comprising an integral elongated member comprising a pair of jaw elementsconnec-ted together at one end and between which the inner tie end is adapted to be gripped, one of said jaw elements being confined Within the other, and a backturned gripping member projected from the said end of the inner jaw element and adapted to grip the outer tie end, said gripping member being in the form of a spring pressed bar hinged bet een its ends to the said inner zuv element.

A tie clip comprising a length of wire bent to present a pair of elongated loops one of Which is confined Within the other, the end of the Wire forming the inner loop be ing projected transmrsely to form it hinge pintle. and a gripping bar hinged between its ends to the said pintle.
