Description

May 20, 1924. 3 1,495,616 P. H. GARDNER TRAY ATTACHMENT Filed March 24. 1923 PHGardner' NITNESS A'ITORNEY Patented May 20, 192 4.
, UNITED STATES PALMER H. GARDNER, OF CRYSTA L. SPRINGS, MISSISSIPPI.
TRAY ATTACHMENT.
Application filed March 24, 1923. Serial No. 627,401.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PALMER a citizen of the-United States, residing at Crystal Springs, in the county of Oopiah and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tray At-'. the following is a specinection with paper andletter baskets orthe tachments, of which fication. I
This invention contemplates the provision of a new article of manufacture in thenatureof a paperweight primarily intended for use in conjunction with letter baskets or trays, although its general use and application is contemplated by the claims.
In carrying out the invention, I provide a paper weight of novel construction preferably formed from a single length of wire and adapted to be wholly arranged within the receptacle with which it is used, the weight proper being associated with means which pivotally supports the weight upon one wall of the receptacle.
Another object of the invention resides in providing an article of the above mentioned character wherein the opposed sides of the weight are suitably connected together by a support or bracing member adapted to contain advertising matter, so that the article is also particularly advantageous as an advertising medium.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the article to a receptacle.
Figure 2 is a view of the article removed from the receptacle.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
The article forming the subject matter of the present invention includes the memberA herein above referred to as the weight, and which member is preferably constructed from a single length of wire and given the configuration or outline shown, although this may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention. However, as
H.. GARDNER,
shown in this particular instance, a length of wire forming the member A is shaped to provide a substantially triangular shaped portion of a size consistentwith the size of. theparticular receptacle with which it is used,.it being borne inmind that the inventionin addition to being used in conlikecan be used in money, drawers-or in fact receptacles and compartments ofanyr size or shape. The-side's 1O ofthis triangular portionv are; twistedtogether-as at 11', and
the wire'andmateriahis then continuedto.
provide spaced limbs 12 which terminate to provide eyes or loops 13. These loops 13 accommodate themselves to a member utilized to pivotally support the weight upon one end wall of the receptacle as shown in Figure 1. The sides 10 of the triangular'shaped portion are connected together and braced. by a suitable frame 14,
.and this frame is designed to receive a.
member 15 having an outline of the same configurationas the frame and which member is adapted to bear advertising matter. Consequently the device is not only useful as a paper weight butisalso meritorious in the capacity of an advertising medium.
Any suitable means may be employed for pivotally supporting the weight upon one wall of the receptacle, but in order to produce a complete article which can be manufactured and sold at a very nominal cost, I provide a member for this purpose which is also constructed from a single length of wire. This member isindicated at B, and is formed with an intermediate V-shaped portion 16 which lies between spaced substantially U-shaped portions 17, the outermost limbs of each U-shaped portion being extended inwardly to form the V-shaped intermediate portion as shown. The innermost or adjacent limbs of the U-shaped portions terminateto provide loops 18 which are associated with the eyes 13 formed by the terminals of the weight above described.
This connection permits the weight to have pivotal movement so that it can be arranged at any height or angle within the receptacle when in use. Of course, the supporting member just described is easily attached to the wall of the receptacle, by arranging the intermediate V-shaped portion 16 at one side of the wall with the U-shaped portions of course against the opposite sides thereof,
r the article in its entirety can be conveniently attached to any receptacle or removed therefrom when desired.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted towhen desired as fall within the scope of what is'claimed;
Having'thus described the invention, I claim: 7 V
1. A paper weight for receptacles comprising in combin'ationa clamp designed to straddle one wall of .the receptacle,, a weighted member constructed from a single length ofmateria-l .and formed to provide an enlarged end portion substantially triangular in'plan', and spaced limbs pr'o-jectl ing from the apex of said end portion, said ends of said limbs being pivotally associ ated with the clamp in a manner whereby the weighted member is wholly disposed Within the receptacle.
2. A paper weight adapted for use with receptacles and comprising in combination a clamp designed to accommodate itself to one wall of the receptacle, a weighted member constructed from a single length of wire and formed to provide an enlarged end portion of substantially triangular formation in-plan, and spaced limbs, said limbs being? twisted togetherat a point/adjacent the apex of said end portion, and terminating to provide eyes for pivotal connection with said clamp, and a reinforcing plate disposed Within the confines of'sai'd enlarged: end
portion and corresponding in shape there- Withjand said plate being connectedwith theop-posed sides of said end portion.
Intestimony whereof I aflix mysigna-ture.
P. H. GARDNER.
