UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS J. GREENAWALT, OF IANSI'IELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO WESTINGHOUSE mc- TBIC PRODUCTS COMPANY, A. CORPORATION F IICHIGAN.
. CARTRIDGE-HEATER TERMINAL Application tiled September 18, 1922. loria! Io. 587.658.
To all lwhom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LEWIS J. GREENAWALT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cartridge-Heater Terminals, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electrically-heated devices and particularly to cartridge heaters.
The object of my invention is to provide a relatively simple and rugged terminal structure for a cartridge heater that shall prevent pulling and twisting action on the ends of the resistor wire.
In practicing my invention, I provide a refractory insulatingI member located adjacent to one end of a tubular metallic casing containing a heating element. The insulating member has a plurality of openings extending longitudinally therethrough 'and a plurality of laterally extendin grooves in the inner face thereof, said grooves communicating with said openings.
Tubular terminal members having integral laterally extending wing portions, are l0- cated in the openings, and the ends of the resistor and of the supply circuit conductors are suitably secured thereto. 4Means integral with the casing serve to hold the refractory insulating member in its proper operative position in the casing.
In the single sheet of drawings,
Figure 1 is a view, in longitudmalsection, of an electric heater comprising the device embodying my invention Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device `illustrated in Fig. 1; i
Figs. 3 and 4 are top, plan and side elevational views, respectively, of a refractory member comprising a part ofthe device emi bodying my invention;
Fi 5 is a fragmentary view in lon 'tudina section of an electric heater ilustrating a securing means, and
Figs. 6 and 7 are views, in front and in end elevation, respectively, of a terminal member comprising a part of the device embodying my invention. A cartridge heater designated generally by the numeral 11 comprises an outer tubu. lar metallic casing 12, at one end of which there is suitably secured thereto, as by brazing, an end cap 13, A supporting member 14, which ma comprise an elongated tubular member o a suitable refractory electrical non-conducting material, is located within the tubular member 12 and has wound thereon a suitable resistor member 15. In order to provide means for conducting the heat from the resistor member to the tubular casing, a quantity 16, of a suitable granular, electric-lnsulating and heat-conducting material, such as alundum, is placed within the casin 12 in such quantity as to occupy substantially all of the space not otherwise occupied by the resistor member and its supportin means.
At t e open end of the casing 12, I provide a refractory insulating member 17, 0f disk form, which has a plurality of openings 18 extending therethrough and located 1n spaced apart relation relatively to each other. On the inner surface of the member 17 there 7l is provided a plurality of parallel grooves 19 each of which communicates with f one of the openin 18.
Termina members 21, comprising a tubular portion and a plurality of laterallyextending wing portions integral therewith, are located in the openings 18, the Wing portions being located 1n the grooves 19 and the tubular portions in the openings 18. The members 21 may be constructed from sheet metal punched and formed to substantially the shape illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings. The end portions 22 of suitable supply circuit conductors are located within the tubular portions of the terminal members 21 as are also the respective ends 23 of the resistor member 15, both end portions being suitably securedtherein, as by soldering or brazing.
It is not essential to the carrying out of my invention that the members 22 constitute the ends of supply circuitY conductors, as they may constitute relatively large terminal members for the cartridge to which the supply circuit and conductors may be sultab y secured.
Means for maintaining the member 17 in its roper operative osition adjacent to and witliin the end of t e tubular member 12 comprise bent-over portions 24 of the tubular casin 12. Any suitableor desired number of t ese struck-in portions 24 may be employed. If necessary, or desirable, the outerfsurface of the member 17 may be locater; a short distance below the cuter 1go no of the tubular casing 12 and the space above the member 17 may be filled with va mass 25 of a suitable heat resisting cement.
The tubular member 21, located as hereinbefore described in the "refracto insulating member, provides a termina construction which prevents aA pull u on the terminals or ends 22 bein imparte to the end portions 23 of the reslstor, thereby preventing a breaking effect thereon. The wing portions of the terminal members 21 prevent also a turning movement of not only the terminal members `but also of the ends 23 of the resistor members whereby damage due to pulling or twisting of the ends of the resistor member is substantially entirely prevented.
Various modifications may be made in m invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, and I desire, therefore, to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A terminal construction for an electrically heated device havin an electrical heating element associated t erewith, comprising a refractory insulating member, and a terminal member for said heating element located in said insulating member and having integral means for reventing a turning movement thereof relatively to said insulating member.
2. A terminal construction for an electrically heated device hav' an electrical heating element associated t erewith, comprising a refractory insulating member, and a terminal member for said heating element located in said insulating member and having integral means for preventing lon 'tudinal and turning movements thereo relatively to said insulating member.
3. A terminal construction for an electrically heated device hav' an electrical heating element associated t erewith, compr1sing a refractory insulating member hav- .Sal
ing an opening extending longitudinally therethrough and a groove in one surface thereof, and a tubular terminal member for said heating element located in said opening and having integral laterally extending wingortions located in said groove.
4. terminal construction for an electr:- cally heated device having a casing, a refractory supporting member therein and a resistor on said supporti member, comprising a refractory insulating member in said casing adjacent to one end of said refractory supporting member, said insulatin member havln an o enin extending 'longitudinally theret roug an a, laterally extending groove in one face thereof, and a tubular terminal member for said heating element located in said opening and having integral laterally extending wing portions located in said groove, integral portions of one end of said casing being struck in to hold said refractory insulating member in proper operative position in said casing. 4 Y
5. In an electrical heating device, the combination with a tubular casing, a refractory supporting member therein and a resistor on supporting member, of a refractory insulating member located within said casing at one. end thereof, said insulating member having a plurality of openings extending lon tudinally therethrough and a plurality of aterally extending grooves in the inner face thereof and said grooves communicating respectively with said openings, tubular terminal members for said resistor located in said (penings and having integral laterally exten mg wing portions located in said grooves, and means inte al withsaid casing for holding said re actory insulating member in its proper operative posit-ion in said casing.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 5th day of Sept.,
