BENNETT, a 'citizen ot the United States of America., residing at lif'luskepjon, in the county of Mushegen and ffl-tate, ot Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (-'rease-Dispensing Appliance; and I do hereby declare the Jfollowing to be a "full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to maire and use the same.
This invention relates to grease dispensingl appliances. Grease, in many cases, is shipped in cans or similar receptacles which hold a limited amount, varying Jfrom five to iir'ty pounds in a can usually, and my invention is directed to an appliance which may be applied to the can, irrespective of the size thereof or the amount of grease therein, and used to withdraw the grrease and dispense it to any desired place of usage. It is a primar.Y object and purpose oit the present invention to construct an appliance ot this character which will attain the above described ends in a simple and effective manner. fr further object of the invention is to construct the appliance so that it will hold the can or similar receptacle containing* `grease and secure it against movement with respect to the appliance when in association therewith. but have means whereby it may be readily detached from the, can when the lgrease therein has been withdrawn so that it may be used with another can or similar receptacle. In the construct-ion of the appliance, a base 1 preferably.y is used, from which, adjacent each end a rod 2 projects upwardly, the same being securely fastened at their lower ends to of rectangular outline and of wood, y

the base. At the upper parts, the rods are threaded, as indicated at 2L so as to receive wing' nuts 3.
Included in the construction of the grease dispensing appliance is a barrel fl to which an inverted cup-like member 5 is secured at its lower end, the inner diameter of the member 5 being larger than the inner diameter ot the barrel. Member 5'is of cast metal, and is formed at its lower edges with a plurality ot outstandingfeet 6, the lower sides of which are in the same horizontal plane. Between the feet 6, recesses 7 are cut in the sides ot the member 5 as shown.
A rod 8 extends through the barrel and above the upper end thereof. A. valveless piston 9 is attached to the lower end of rod 8 and an operating` handle 10 at the upper end whereby said rod and attached piston may be moved up and down in the barrel. In the lowermost position of the piston it comes below the lower end or" the barrel and into the space within the member 5, leaving a space for the passage of grease into the barrel at the lower end and by the piston.
A casting 13 is secured to the barrel adjacent its upper end from which two arms 14 extend in opposite directions, each at its 'outer end being slotted as indicated at 15. The arms are of such length that the rods 2 may pass upwardly through the slots 15, and the slots 15 are cut deep enough into the ends of the arms that the barrel with attached member 13 may be readily applied to the rods 2 without entirely removing` the nuts 3 which are adapted to be turned downwardly against the ends of arms 14.
A. can or simila receptacle 16 having a bottom 17 is placed on the base 1. in the use of the appliance, said can being,` filled wholly or partly with grease. These cans as they come from the manufacturer or distributer are filled with grease and in such case the top is removed and the barrel with attached member 5 forced downwardly through the grease until the feet 6 bear against the. bot tom 17 of the can. The arms 14C are then engagged with rods 2, after which nuts 3 are tightened against said arms clamping the bottom 17 oi the can between the member 5 and the base 1. In forcing the barrel into the grease, the piston 9 may be held in lowermost position and grease carried and forced into vthe barrel as is evident. With succeeding strokes of the piston, the grease is drawn through the passages 7 made in the sides ot member 5 past the piston 9 when it is in its lowerinost position and into the barrel by suction, the dispensing` pump consisting of the barrel, piston and attached parts Working` on the principle shown in Patent No. 1,337,629, issued April 20, 1920. n
The construction shown and described is very practical as it may be used with substantiall)v all of the smaller containers for grease to remore the saine therefrom Without the one using the appliance coming into contact withthegrea-se and kWithout Waste thereof. I claim:

An appliance ot the character described, comprisinga base adapted to support a `grease containing` receptacle, a rod attached to the base adjacent each end thereof and extendingP upwardly therefrom, said rods being threaded at their upper ends7 a barrel adapted to enter the receptacle from above.r a member attached substantially at its iniddle to the barrel at its upper end and having oiniositel,Y extending` arms slotted at their outer ends for the passage oit the upper portions ot said rods. nuts threaded on to the rods against the. upper sides ot said arms an inverted cup-like member attached to the lower end ol' the barrel and having recesses cut in the sides thereot and adapted to engage the bottom of the receptacle9 a rod located lengthwise of the barrel and extending above the barrel, a ralveless piston on the lower end of the 'rod adapted. to come below the barrel in lowerinost position, an operatinghandle on the upper end oit the rod, an outlet neck at the upper end of the barrel, and a flexible conduit attached to said neck, substantially as described.

An appliance of the character described, comprising a base, a rod attached to the base adjacent each end thereof and extending upwardl);v therefrom, a grease dispensingY barrel adapted to be located rerticalip,7 between the rods, a member attached stl `tantiall3T at its middle to the barrel adjacent the upper end thereof and hafcinpr opposi'telli' extendiinq arms slotted. at their outer ends for thev passage of the. rods. means on the rods engaging against the ends ot the arms and adjustable to bear against the arms and. torce the lower end of the oarrel against the bottom ot the receptacle to clamp it to the base., and means mounted on the barrel tor withdrawing grease troni a receptacle carried on the base and into which the llower portion ot the barrel inserts. and tor discharging said grease from the upper end of the barrel.
