Be it known that I, FimNoIsV C. ESGHE- RICH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Warrenton, in the county of Fauquier and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Shoe-Holding Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a shoe holding device. Its object is the productionof such a device, by which shoes,boots and the like of differentl lengths or sizes can be easily clamped in place for cleaning, polishing and for other purposes. A further object of the invention is the production of a' device, which will automatically lock the movable members thereof in place.
.The organization of the invention comprises a frame-*that can be easily locked' in position to a supporting bracket and which as detachablyv pivoted thereto the front portion of a boot-tree. A movable heel portion of the boot-tree is slidably supported on a pair of guide bars extending from the frame, and which heel portion can be moved relatively to said front portion by means of a toggle mechanism. The latter is controlled by an operating handle that can be locked for any position of the toggle mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 rep-h resents a side elevation of an exemplification of the device; Fig. 2 shows a left hand side view of Fig. 1.; Fig. 3 indicates an enlarged section of Fig. 1 on the line 3, 3; Fig. 4 represents a fragmentary topV view of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 shows an end view of a detail; Fig. 6 represents an'elevation of a modified detail and Fig. 7 indicates a top plan view of Fig. 6.
A frame is designated in its entirety by the letter A and comprises the members 20 and 21 at right angles to each other. The member 21 has' formed therewith the front edge 21a and the rear edge 2lb. An end plate 22 is formed with the member 20 and is provided with the doveLtailed tapered projection 23. The member 21 of the frame A has formed therein the elongated guide opening 28. The lower end of said member 21 is shouldered to form thek webs 29 and has also formed therewith the lug 30 having the openings 31.
A boot-tree is indicated in its entirety by the letter B vand. comprises the front shell cross wall 37. From the latter extend the lugs with bayonet shaped grooves 41 having the bearings 42 and the abutting end walls 43. A cross pin 45 extends through `the web 29, and the bearings 42 ofthe portion 35' are detach'ably locked to the pin 45,
and when so locked the end walls 43, abut f against the adjacent faces ofthe lug 30. l
Parallel guide bars havevone end of each fastened in the openings 31 of the lug 30. The heel-portion C of the boot-tree comprises a heelshaped shell 52 `with the rear wall 53 having the opening 54. A pair of cylindrical guide bosses 55' with `the parallel guide openings 56 are formed with the shell of said portion C. A cross pin 57 issecured 1n openings in the adjacent walls of the guide'bosses '55. Toggle links 60 and 61 are pivoted at their upper ends tothe pin 62 'andthe lower end of the link 60 is pivotedtov thev cross pin 45. The lower end ofthe link61 is pivoted to the cross upin 57.` An operating` arm 65, is indicated with the jaws 66 at one end and the curved nose 67 at the other end.
Pairs of locking pins 68 and 69 extend through said arm 65 and. operating-lugs 70 extend from the opposite faces thereof. The portion d of the arm ybetween the pins 68 and 69 is located in the verticaly guide open-` lng 28 of the frame A. A connecting link E' at its upper end is located between the members of the jaw 66 and is pivoted thereto by support not shown and the vframe A is deV tachably connected thereto by locking the dovetailed proj ection 23 .with the dovetailed portions 76 and 77.
To yuse the shoe holding device a shoe not shown is located on the front portion 35 of the boot-tree, and the operating arm 65is located ina horizontalposition by gripping n the operating lugs 70, bearing down thereon to unlock the pins 68 and 69 from the member 21 of the `frame A. The. operator then brings the arm 65 to the level desired and 21d of the' frame and lowered, so that the heel portion C will separate from the front portion 35 of the boot-tree to firmly clamp said shoe. The arm is then released and it will take an inclined-position, swinging down on the pin 74 and lock with the frame A. The pin 68 bears on and locks with the front edge 21a of the member 21 of the frame and the pin 69 bears on and locks with the rear edge 2lb of said frame, by reason of the thrust produced by the shoe on the toggle links which forces the linkE upwardly.
To unlock the shoe from the boot-tree the arm 65 is brought to a position at right angles to the member Q1 of the frame A and elevated, which will cause the heel portion C to approach the portion 35, the said portion G sliding on the bars 50. -The shoe can then be released from the boot-tree.
Referring to the modification shownin Figs. 6v and 7 an operating arm indicated in its entirety by the letter H is substituted for the operatingarm 65. The said arm H has formed therewithy the jaw 81 at one end and theweight 82 at the other end thereof. Ears 85 extend from the opposite sides of the arm H. An operating and locking pin with theportions 86 and 87 is fastened to the arm H. The portion i of the arm H between the ears 8.5 and the pin having the portionsv 86 and 87 is located yin the vertical guide opening 28 of the frame A. The connecting link E lat its upper end is located between the members of the jaw 8l and is pivoted thereto bythe elongated pin 74, which latter extends beyond the outer faces of the jaw 81. In the operation of the device with the arm H, the operator can either bear down on the pin 74a or raise the ball 82 to locate the arm at right angles to member 21 of the frame A,`as described for the arm 65.
Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is :T-
1. In a device of the character described the combination of a frame, a front portion of a boot-tree extending from the frame, a heel portion of the boot-tree, a toggle mechanism interposed between said portions, a link with one end pinned tothe toggle mechanism and an operating arm movably disposed to said frame with one end pinned to said link` said operating arm automatically locking` with saidvframe under the thrust produced by a shoe when engaging the members of .the boot-tree and said operating arm adapted yto be unlocked from the frame when pressure is brought thereon.
2. In a device of the character described the combination of a frame, the front portion of a boot-tree detachably locked to the frame, a slidable heel portion coacting with said front portion, a pair of toggle links with the upper end of each pivoted to a pin, the lower end of one linkpivoted to the frame and the lower end of the other link pivoted to the heel portion, a connecting link with its lower end pivoted on the pin of the upper ends of the toggle links and an operating arm with aportion thereof extending through an opening of the frame, one end of said arm pivoted to the connecting link, said arm adapted to lock with said frame when released and located in an inclined'direction to a member thereof.

In a device of the character described the combination of a frame having a guidey opening therein, a front portion of a boottree detachably locked to the frame, guide bars extending from the frame, a heel portion for the boot-tree slidablysupported on said bars, a pair of toggle links with their upper ends pivotedon a'pin, the lower end of one of said links pivoted to the frame and the lower end of the second toggle link pivoted to said heel portion, a connecting link with one end thereof pivoted on the pin ofv the upper ends of the toggle links, and an operating arm with a portion thereof 'extending through the guide opening of the frame, one end vof said arm pivoted to the.

5. In a device of the character'describedl the combination of a frame having a'guide opening therein, a front portion of a boot-` tree supported on the frame, a heel portion of the boot-tree slidably connected to the frame, toggle links pivotedto each other on a pivot at one end thereof, the other end of one link pivoted to the frame and the other end of the other link pivoted to the said heel portion, a connected link with onepend pivoted to said pivot, an operating arm with a portion thereof extending through the guide opening of the frame, twov locking pins extending from opposite sides of said arm said pins locking with the frame when said arm is located in an inclined position thereto.

In a device of the character described the combination of a frame having a guide opening, one portion o a boot-tree connected to the frame, a second portion of a boottree in movable relation to the first portion, a toggle mechanism comprising a pair of links, one of said links With one end pivoted to the frame and the other link pivoted to the moi-*able portion of the boot-tree, a pin connecting the other ends of the links, a connecting link with one end pinned on the latter pin, an operating arm pinned to the other end of the connecting link and extending through the guide opening of the frame and a pair of pins extending through the operating arm, each pair of the latter pins adjacent to the frame, said pins locking With the fra-me when the operating arm is released and swings to an inclined position.
7. In a device of the character described the combination of a frame having a guide opening, one portion of a boot-tree in fixed relation to the frame, a second portion of the boot-tree in movable relation to the other portion, a toggle mechanism for the movable portion of the boot-tree, a connecting link with one end pinned to the toggle mechanism, an operating arm extending through the guide opening of the frame with one end thereof pinned to the connecting link, locking pins extending from the operating arm adapted to lock with the frame When said arm is located in an inclined position and operating lugs extending from the operating arm.
