Description

A ril? '29, 192% G. H. RECKE SPARK PLUG FOR AUTOMOBILES Filed 1922 Patented a 2%, i924.

Application filed dugnst 2, 19212. Eerie Ho. 5?9,; 5.
To Z ii /loin. 231 an op concern.
tie it known that l, Gnome H. RICKE, a citizen ot the United States, residing at the city of Cincinnati. in the county of Hamil- 5 ton and State of Ohio, have invented cer" combustion chamber of an engine cylinder,
and as this end of the spark plug is usually open, oil splashes on the same and carbon is formed, which eventually insulates the electrodes to such an extent. that they no longer produce a spark. As a result the cylinder 29 containing the foul plug, ceases to produce power.
My improved spark plug is so constructed that oil splashing within the cyllnder is prevented from reaching the electrodes, and the 255 plug has apertures to permit the circulation of the explosive mixture and the. gases resulting rom explosions, through the chamber of the spark plug for the purpose of cleaning the electrodes.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part (it this s ')ecilication:
Fig. l, is a. view of a spark plug in elevation, partly broken away. and in section to show my invention,
Fig". .t an elevation of the same viewed from another side.
Fig. I is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
hi i, is an enlarged bottom view.
' Fig. .5, is vertical section of the lovver cnd of a spark plum with my invention applied thereto in a modified form. lo the drawing, the spark plug itself. or the body thereof. is marked 1. My invention consists in adding to the body 1, a cylindrical skirt-2. provided at its mouth with a batile disk 3. having arms 4, which join 1t to the cylinder .2, thus forming apertures at 5. in Fig. 5. however cylinder 2 is made integral with the disk 3, having a slot opening 5.
it one side the cylinder 2 is provided with a. port 6.
The usual terminal wire or electrode 7, is
employed. and I also employ a wire or eleo electrodes. a t
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature at Cincinnati, Ohio. this first day at .ltngnst.
trode 8, one positive and the other so that when the electric current is a spark 18 created between them.
My new spark plug operates efnciently and does not gather carbon or oil. (lensequcntly less oil and pin s are used, cleaning 15 necessary, and the engine -emains in a more erfect condition at all times, delivering-all power expected fro-ii all its cylinders and pistons; inasmuch es'l keep the inside of the spark plug dry so that it can spark perfectly.
The port 6 is on the inside of the'con'e prcssion or combustion chamber when the spark plug is put in place, so that when there is an explosion free circulation for the gaseous products is insured. as these pass out thru said port 6 and. thru the apertures 5 leaving no chance for carbon or other deposits on the inside of the spark plug and on the electrodes.
The disk 3 can be made integral with the cylinders 52, or may be attached if desired.
My invention can be used in connection with any form or style of spark plug" and do not confine myself to the specinc construction herein shown in carrying out my invention, the form shown being a preferred One.
and desire to secure Hy fitters Patent is:
A spark plug mcluchnga shell provided with external threads adapted to engage the threads of an enginecylinder and haveng aoil and the like from entering said skirt,
said plug being provided with a lower ripen ture between the skirt and battle, a port. pr s vided in the skirt near the upper end of i e same, a central electrode arranged in so 1 shell and a second electrode in electrical connection with said skirt. said electrodes 0 being arranged within the shell between the upper and lower apertures, Whereby'a cur culation at gas may take place past said GEQRGE c- What I claim as new end my iiwention
