This invention relates to combing, machines, and particularly to combing machines of that'type which have a fan or suction apparatus for the purpose of removing thewaste from thecircularbrush of the machine and keep'ng ,the machine free from dust during the working. j l
As illustrating combing machines of this i type I, would refer to the following United States patents to Both, No. 905,233, Dec. 1, 1908 and Belger No. 1,106,073, August 4 1914. These combingmachines are usually driven by means of fast and loose pulleys, and the main shaft, which is driven by the fast pulley isoperatively connected to; a, fan shaftfrom which. thefan of the aspirator or other suction deviceis operated.
In operating combing machines of this. typeit is desirable that the fan or suction apparatus should continue to run for a period of time after, the machine has come to rest in order that the suction.-action may con-.

When the belt is shifted onto the loose pulley, however, the first movement of the lever 22 will raise the part 34 to bring the nuts 36 against the part 33 and thereafter the link 20 is operative as a strut to raise the elbow lever 15 into the full line position Fig. 2. The purpose of this loose connection in the link 20 is so that when the belttightening pulley-is in its operative position it has the full benefit of the Weight 18 in holding the belt 13 taut.
It will thus be seen that my invention comprehends a driving mechanism for the fan which is constructed so that it will allow the fan to rotate freely under its own momentum after the machine is stopped,
' but will start the fan up instantly when the machine is started, and while I have illustrated herein one construction operating in this manner yet I wish it understood that the invention is not limited to the form shown but may include other constructions which will accomplish, this purpose.
I claim,
1. The combination with a combing machine having a main driving shaft, fast and loose pulleys thereon, a belt shipper by which the driving belt is shipped from one pulley to the other, and a fan shaft from which the fan is operated, of means for driving the fan from the driving shaft, said means including a fan-driving belt which is normally sufiiciently loose so that it is ineffective for power transmission purposes and means operated by the belt shipper to tighten said fan-driving belt when the driving belt is shipped onto the fast pulley and for loosening the fandriving belt when the driving belt is shipped onto the loose 1 fan-driving belt pulley fast on the driving shaft, a belt pulley on the fan shaft, a fan belt encircling the belt pulley and the fandriving, pulley and normally being sufiiciently loose to permit the fan shaft to rotate freely, and means operated by the belt shipper for tightening the fan belt when the driving belt is shipped onto the fast pulley and for loosening the fan belt when the driving belt is shipped onto the loose pulley.
3. A combing machine having in combination a main driving shaft, fast and loose pulleys thereon, a belt shipper by which the driving belt is shipped from one pulley to the other, a fan shaft from which the fan is driven, a fan belt for driving the fan shaft from the main shaft, said beltbeing normally sufliciently loose to permit the fan to rotate freely by its own momentum, a weighted elbow lever ,pivotally mounted on the fan shaft, a belt-tightening pulley carried by said lever, and a connection between said lever and the belt shipper by which the belt-tightening pulley is rendered inoperative when the driving belt is on the loose pulley and operative when the driving belt is on the fast pulley.
