s'rrs PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS LEVITT IMPEY, OF NORTHFIELD, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO Y MORLAND & IMPEY LIMITED, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
c LOOSE-LEAF BooK.
Application filed May 28, 1923. Serial VNo. 642,054. l
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANCIS VIinvrrir IM- Per, a British subject, residing at Kalama- Zoo Works, Northfield, in the city of 'Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Loose-Leaf Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loose leaf books of the kind in which a screw and nut are employed for actuating the binding mechanism, and particularly the kind in which the screw engages a nut on a cross bar attached to thongs or like flexible members extending between the covers and passing through the leaves.
rIhe object of the invention is to provide an improved nut construction.
The invention comprises the formation of the nut from a pair of similar elements made from metal sheet or strip and perforated by obliquely disposed slots with which the screw threads can engage.
In particular the invention comprises the formation of the nut as above described integrally with a cross bar to which binding thongs areconnected. Y
In the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings Figure l is a side elevation, and Figure 2 an end elevation of a cross bar formed with a nut in accordance with this invention.
Figure 3 is a cross section of the nut por-. tion to a larger scale than Figures l and 2.
In applying the invention as shown to a binder comprising a pair of thongs, clamping bars, and covers, the thongs a being connected at one end to one of the covers and at the other end to a cross bar b movable by a screw c in the other cover, the
cross bar is made from a pair of sheet metal members adapted to be placed face to face and to grip the thongs between their opposite ends. At its centre each portion is formed with a transverse recess of semi-circular cross section to embrace one half of the screw, and is also perforated by a number of oblique slots d extending from one side of the member to the other. When the cross bar members are placed together and secured (as, for example by rivets e) the slotted portions of the two members form a nut through which the screw can pass, the threads engaging the aforesaid slots.
By the above described construction I not only obtain an improved-cross bar,'but I also provide a better nut than usual, and
the whole is more compact and convenient than the constructions heretofore employed.
The invention is not limited to the eX- ample above described, as it is applicable, with appropriate variation of detail, to other binder mechanisms in which a screw and nut are used.l
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-` 2. A binding mechanism for loose leaf'- books including a nut formed from a pair of sheet metal strips arranged face to face and connected together, the intermediate portions of said strips being bulged in opposite directions to form a tube, and each of said bulged portions being provided with permanently open parallel inclined slots sok adapted to 'receive the threads of the screw.
3. In binding mechanisms for loose leaf books, a combined nut and bar constructed from a pair of similar sheet or strip metal elements each yformed with a transverse bulge and obliquely disposed slots for engagement by screw threads, substantially as described. Y
4. In binding mechanisms for loose leaf books involving binding thongs and a nut and screw for tightening the thongs, the combination comprising a pair of similar sheet or strip metal elements each formed with a transverse bulge and obliquely disposed slots for engagement by the screw threads, the said elements being also adapted to grip the thongs, togetherwith means for securing the elements together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
FRANCIS LEVIT'I IMPEY.
