GEORGE E. WILLIAMS, OF ITHAOA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEEfi-PLANTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,175, dated March 31, 1874; application filed March 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE It. WILLIAMS, of Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Plaster or Seed Sowing Ma chines, of which the following is a specifica- My invention relates to improvements suggested by the sowing devices patented by Lynfred Mood, November 24, 1868, No. 84,296, and consists in the feeding device and means for regulating the same.
In' the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a back view of my seed-box. Fig. 2 is a section of the same, and Fig. 3 is the feed-regulating slide separately.
In place of employing a hinged leaf, J, having a fixing-lever, K, held by the screw and burr of a clamp, L, and the ends of the leaf J being acted upon by springs, as described in the specification of patent before referred to, according to my invention the rear side A of the seed-box A is continued down to a point level with the under side of the sliding bar A leaving only a slight space between its inner edge and the inner edge of the upper sliding bar A On the under edge of the sliding bar A a flat plate, A is affixed, which extends the whole width of the seed-box A, and is so placed as to bear against one face of the teeth F which are formed flat, and project from the lower feed or sliding bar F, which plays in metallic bearings below the feed-box. These two sliding bars move in opposite directions, as is described in the specification of patent referred to. E represents a flat plate or slide, which is connected to the under edge of the rear side A of the seed-box A by screw-bolts or pins 0 G, which pass through inclined slots E in the plate or slide 5E, and are secured firmly to the under side of the part A. The plate E is adjusted toward or from the plate A, to regulate the amount of seed, &c., sown, by means of the crank-lever G G the pins 0 0 working in inclined slots in the plate. Upon one of the metallic ends N of the box A a bearing, G is mounted, which supports, with capability of motion, the shaft G to which, at one end, is connected the lever G, the lower end of which works in a slot, E in the end of the plate E. The opposite end of the shaft G is fitted with a handle-lever and indicating arm, G which works in a rack or guide,'G*, provided with a slotted opening for its reception, having notches formed therein for the purpose of holding the handle G in any desired position, and at the same time indicating the position of the feed-plate E, and consequently the amount of seed being sown. The handle-lever G is retained in the required notch by means of a spring affixed to its under side.
The operation of my improvements is as follows: When the end of the handle and indieating-lever G is down and placed in the lowest notch of rack or guide G, the plate E will be moved in the direction of the arrow 1, Fig. l, and at the same time, by means of the pins 0 0 working in the slots E it will be drawn outward, leaving the greatest amount of open ing possible in the bottom of the box A, and consequently sowing the largest amount of seed which the machine is capable of disposing of at one time. By raising the end of the lever G and consequently moving the end of the lever G toward the end N of' the box A, the plate E will be forced in the same direction, and by reason of the inclined slots E working against the pins 0 O, the plate E will be forced inward, thereby contracting the opening in the under side of the box A, and decreasing the amount of seed sown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1. The combination, in a seeding-machine,
of sliding bar A, provided with plate A, as shown and described, with sliding gage-plate E, having slots E pins 0, and vibrating fingers F substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a seeding-machine, of a sliding bar A, provided with plate A vibrating fingers F, as shown and described, sliding gage-plate E, pins 0, levers G G and rack or guide G all constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
GEO. R. WILLIAMS.
