if TE S CHARLES E. MCCOY, OF LOGANSPORT, INDIANA.
WASENG MACHINE.
original application filed December 3, 1920, Serial No. 428,020. Divided and this application filed December 17, 1921.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. MCCOY, citizen of the United States, residing at Logansport, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in washing machines and the present application is a division ofmy'application Serial No. 4628,020, filedDec. 3, 1920. r
The primary object of the present in- 1 vention is to furnish a tank of improved construction which may be readily made from stamped sheet metal and which may be built up in larg quantities at small expense.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tank body formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent to provide a bottom, side walls and an outwardly extending mouth flange.
26 Another object of the present invention is to provide a tank in which the side walls are connected together by angle irons which form the legs of the tank.
Another object of the invention is to provide a basket for use in th tank and to construct this basket in substantially the same manner as the tank so that the same type of machinery may be used for both the tank and the basket, and so that the tank and basket may be made in one factory.
With the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a washing machin having a tank and basket constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transvers horizontal sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a sheet metal blank from which the body of the tank is formed.
Fig. 4: is a bottom plan view of the tank cover.
Rib
Serial No. 523,008.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of my improved basket. Fig. 6 is a plan view of blank from which the body of the basket is formed.
The drawings illustrate a pounder type washing machine, but from the following description, it will be understood that rayimproved tank or basket may be used with other types of washing machines.
1 designates the tank, 2 the basket, 3 the pounder and at any suitable mechanism for actuating the pounder. The specific construction of the pounder and actuating mechanism is disclosed in my original application above mentioned.
For the purpose of forming or building up the tank, I employ a blank 5 as shown 7 in Figure 3, and this blank is preferably stamped from sheet metal, and it comprises a bottom portion 6, end wall portions 7 and 8 and side wall portions 9 and 10. After the blank is stamped from sheet metal, the wall portions are bent upwardly on the lines 11 to form the body of the tank as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The edges of the wall portions are then connected together by angle irons 12 which are preferably secured to the 30 walls by rivets 13. These angle irons reinforce the corners of the tank and extend downwardly to provide supporting legs 14.
It will be noted that the wall portions 8,
9 and 10 have extensions 15 at their outer ends and the ends of these extensions are angularly cut as shown at 16, so that these extensions may be bent at right angles to the wall portions and provide a flange 17 at the top of the tank, which is continuous from one side of the wall portion 7 to the other side edge of said wall portion. The cover for the tank is shown in Fig. 4 and it com prises a fiat plate 18 having a reinforcing frame 19 on its underside and hinge elements 20 at one end which connect the same to the upper edge of the wall 7.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the body portion of the tank and the legs 14; may be rapidly manufactured and inexpensively assembled, and when the meeting edges of the body portion are soldered together a strong water-tight leg supported tank will be provided.
The basket employed in the tank may also 105 be manufactured from sheet metal and the blank for this purpose is shown in Figure 6. This blank comprises a bottom portion 21, end wall portions 22, and side wall portions 23. The bottom portion is perforated as shown at 24 andithese perforations may be made at the same time that the blank is cut from the sheet metal. The wall portions 22 and 23 are bent upwardly as shown in Figure 5 and then their edges are secured together by angle irons 25 and rivets :26. If desired the basket may be provided with handles 27.
As the tank and basket are of practically the same construction they may be readily manufactured by the same type of ma chinery and they may be readily assembled by persons skilled in sheet metal article assembling.
In ,view of the foregoing, I believe that the construction, operation and advantages of the invention may be readily understood by those skilled in the art, and I am aware that various changes may be made in the construction disclosed without departing from the terms of the claim.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is: V
A washing machine tank having a body portion formed of a single piece of sheet metal and including a bottom and side and end walls integral with said bottom, angle irons connecting the side edges of said walls and extending below said bottom to provide supporting legs for the tank body and extensions integral with certain of said walls and forming an outwardly extending flange the upper edge of the tank body, the ends of said extensions on each of said walls being diagonally cut to snugly engage the ends of the extensions on the other walls.
In testimony whereof I hereunto a'fiix my resence of two witnesses.
