- c. s. OLNEY ORNAMENTAL COVER FOR DESIGNATING THE CONTENTS OF SEALED CONTAINERS Filed Jan. 16. 1922 Patented Apr. 35, 1%24.
U W ii T E S CORALIE SELBY OLNEY,
or oaanan'n, onmroamn.
ORNAMENTAL COVER FOR DEBIGNATING THE CONTENTS OF SEALED CONTAINERS.
Application filed January To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORALIE S. OLNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Oovers for Designating the Contents of Sealed Containers, of which the following is a specification.
The hereinafter described invention comprises a cover adapted for the sealing of glass or other containers designed for the storage therein of fruits and jellies, the same being of such desi and construction as to enable the housewife or others determining at a glance the nature of the article seale within the container; the objects of the invention being the production of a simple, neat, attractive, comparatively inexpenslve, durable and eflicient closure or seali cover having associated therewith a figure ornamentation or character which as to configuration, outline and color conforms to that of the product sealed within the container, thereby enabling the expensive and highly attractive labels at present utilized to designate the contents of the container to be dispensed with.
To comprehend the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a glass container or jar with the sealing or closure cover applied thereto, said cover having associated therewith a :6 re or character representative of a straw err Figure 2 is a view of t e cover detached from the container and having associated therewith a figure or character representative of a blackberry.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 of the drawings disclosin a figure or character representative of a di erent fruit.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to designate an ordinary type of jar or container for preserved fruits and jellies, provided with the usual outstanding circumferential flange 2. The closure or sealing cover 3 preferably formed of metal is provided with a depending flange 4 for engagement with the flange 2 of the jar or container 1. The flange 4 of the cover may be secured to the flange or neck 2 of the jar or container in any suitable manner, such for instance as employed with the cover of an ordinary Mason fruit jar commonly used by house- 16, 1922. Serial Ito. 529,530.
wives for the putting up of preserves, fruits and jellies.
In the present case, the cover 3 is provided with a base 5 in relief, from which springs or upst-ands an ornamental figure or character 6 having the sha e, configuration, outline and color of the ruit or jelly contents of the container, and which by reason of its distinctive appearance and uniqueness at once attracts the eye and indicates the contents of the container. For instance, if the container is filled with strawberry jam or jelly, the ornamental figure or character of the cover is a perfect representation of a strawberry, in every respect made as true to nature as possible. The upstanding figure or character in every case is formed as a true representation of the fruit sealed Within the container, so at a mere glance the housewife or other may determine the contents of the container.
By the use of the described ornamental cover for the container, the necessity of attaching to the outside of the container written or printed labels to designate the contents thereof is eliminated, and which is a feature which will readily a peal to those required to put up fruit and ellies in large quantlties.
Preferably, the ornamental base 5 and the figure or character 6 associated therewith, I form of molded material, the base 5 being cemented or otherwise securely held to the upper or exterior face of the cover 3, but the manner of forming these features is immaterial.
The cover is exceedingly neat and attractive in appearance, and by its baldness as to outline, configuration, and the color scheme, presents a ready and quick means of identification as to the contents of the sealed container.
For the use of manufacturers and dealers generally placing preserves, fruits and jellies on the market in sealed containers, the use of the present invention eliminates the use of expensive and highly decorative printed labels generally employed to designate the products of the sealed containers, while permitting the products to be placed on the market not only in a unique and distinctive form of dress appearance, but equally so in a container by which the contents thereof is determined by visual inspection of its closure cap or cover.
li am well aware that the closure cover with its associated ornamental figure or character may be. formed in various ways .acter in has relief forming an integral part thereof and representing the particular contents of the 'ar.
'2. A means or. specificall identi and labeling the contents 0 a contamer, comprising a closure for such container having as apart thereof a rojecting portion simulating the ori inal ruit, berry or the like from which t e tainer is made.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this s ecification.
CO ALIE SELBY OLNEY.
