HARRY n. NEIEF, or CAMBRIDGE, AssAcHUsETrs, AssIeNo TO n-r-rnrr BROOM coivrrAivY, or BosroN, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION or MASSACHU$ETTS BRQQM- Application filed August 17, 1221. Serial No. 493 022.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HA r D. Nnrr, a citizen of the United Statea'and resident of mbrid e, n the Qe ty of M d e 5 and State of-Massachusetts, have invented a mproveme t n ro O wh h following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. l
My Pre en n ent on re ate to oe and more particularly to sectional or unit brooms comprised of a plurality of'br'ooiu sections or units held together 111 a sectional holder; i In my Patent, No. 1,411,221, granted March 2 8, 1922, I have described and claimed an improved form of unit broom or brush in which a plurality of broom units or segments may be inserted in a holder to build up a broom of the ordinary shape for hand use. Such broom, while useful for the purpose for which it was designed, is ordinarily not wide enough to rapidly perform light sweeping over large areas and the ordinary present commercial form of wide brush is objectionable because-of the first high cost and short life. As a substitute for the ordinary commercial wide brush I have de signed the brush or broom forming the subject matter of the present invention which will have all the advantages of the ordinary commercial wide broom and none of its disadvantages and which will also have in addition the advantages such as described with respect to the broom in my copending application above referred to.
The object of my invention therefore is an improved broom or brush of the socalled wide or brush type, comprised of a plurality of interchangeable broom units and holders therefor.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention Fig. l is a front elevation;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a plan view;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the holder for the brush holding units;
Fig. 7 is a plan view similar to Fig. 5 i
this holder 10 may be made as long as desired and is provided at its central portion with a web 13 joining the top and sides 14, while the top at either end'is provided with a slot 15 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The two sides 14: are bent at an'angl'eto the top plate and defineasubstantially rectangular passage extending throughout the length of the holder, the wall or diaphragm 13 being located midway of this passage. Holders 16 of any desired length and of an exterior size and shape to admit of free insertion in the triangular passage defined by the side walls 14c,'are provided on their interior with a substantially triangular passageway in which fits the ends of the brush units 17. This brush holding passageway is closed at one end by a wall 18 the other end being left open and on the top of the holder 16 adjacent the open end thereof is a threaded stud 19 on which is screwed a wing nut 20, this stud 19 when the holder 16 is inserted in the passage defined by the side walls 14L and top plate of the holder 10 moves into the slot 15 and by screwing the wing nut 20 downward on a threaded stud 19 the holder 16 is firmly attached to the holder 10. The lengths of the holders 16 may be of any length and are so designed as to be slightly shorter than the space occupied by any desired number of the brush units 17 so that as the holder 16 is forced into position in the holder 10 the brush units 17 will be compressed between the end wall 18 and the web 13. As shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5 I have arranged the holder 10 to receive one holder 16 on either side of the web 13. I may, however, make the holder integral with one of the brush To make a symmetrical brush in this case but one brush holder 16 is required.
If preferred, I may dispense entirely with the various unit structures above described and may combine thehandle holdingunit and brush holding unit in one unitary structure, as shown in Fig. 8. In this modification I may retain or dispense with the diaphragm 13 and also with one or both of the end walls 18, removable end walls 23 being utilized in this event.
My improved brush may be readily assembled or disassembled and worn or dama ed brush units 17 re )laced b new ones or g l y the relative order of such units in the brush holder maybe variedvas desired. A in a brush of this character the wipers or bristles soon assume a position that makes a rather acuteangle with its original position,
' due to the fact that a brush of this type is used with a pushing stroke, I may in the modification shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5, by simply loosening the wing nuts 20, reverse the position of the holders 16 with the result that the wipers in the practically reconstructed brush have now a tendency to slope toward the position in which the brush is to be pushed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
' 1. In a broom of the kind described, the 40 combination of a central holder, a substantially triangular passageway therein, a web located in said passage and dividing the same into two parts, brush unit holders, a
plurality of brush units in each holder and means on the brush unit holders and central holder for maintaining the brush unit holders in position in the passageway with the brush units in engagement with the dividing wall or diaphragm.
2. In a broom of the kind described, the combination of a central holder, a substan tially triangular passage extending longitudinally of the holder, a web in said passage and dividing it into substantially two equal parts, a brush unit holder, a plurality of brush units mounted therein, a stud se cured to the top of vthe brush unit holder,
a slot in the upper portion of the central holder through which the stud extends and means engaging said stud for clamping the central holder and \brushunit holder to gether against relative movement.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to. this specification.
