OATMAN H. TANNER, OF DONPHAN, MSSOUR, ASSXGNOR'OF ONE-HALF TO C. WHTE, 0F DONIPHAN, MSSOURI.
WRENCH.
Application filed May 18, 1922.
To all whom z't' may conce/m Be it known that l, OATMAN H. TANNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Doniphan, in the county of Ripley and State of liiissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Y'Vrenches; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.Y
rJ'he present invention relates to wrenches, and aims to provide a novel and improved wrench device for tightening and loosening bolts, nuts, and screws, in inaccessible or cramped places, such as in an automobile engine and transmission mechanism.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench mechanism which can extend around an obstruction and so constructed and operable that the bolt or screw can be conveniently rotated.
i further object is the provision of such a wrench comprising a novel assemblage and construction of the component elements', to render the device practical and eicient for the intended purposes.
lith the foregoing and other objects in View, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without de# parting from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a planview of the improved wrench.
Fig. 2 is an opposite plan view thereof.
F ig. 3 is an edge elevation of the device.
F ig. 4 is a front end view of the device.
l? ig. 5 is a sectional detail on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out the invention, there is pro- `vided a yoke 7, bent from a rod, and comprising the frame of the wrench to be disposed around or astride an obstruction. One end portion of said yoke is bent at an angle and back to provide an outstanding handle 8 for holding the yoke or frame, and a head 9 is secured to the opposite terminal of the yoke.
The bolt or screw engaging member 10 is assembled with the head 9, and, as shown,
Serial 170.561,90?.
has a socket forA engaging the head of the bolt or screw or a nut thereon. The member 10 has a reduced shank or stem 11 engaging through a worin wheel 12 disposed in a recess 13 in the outer side of the head 9, and the mem er 10 projects outwardly from said wheel and head, in a direction opposite to the handle S. Thus, the handle 8 projects from one end of the yoke or frame Yto be conveniently held in one hand, while the member 10 projects in an opposite direction from the opposite end of the yoke, to engage the bolt or screw. rEhe shank or stem 11 is preferably of square or angular section, so that the member 10 and wheel 12 turn as a unit, and a collar lei is iitted on said stem within an opening 15 in the head 9 concentric with and smaller in diameter than the recess 13. Anti-frictional rollers 16 are disposed Vbetween the collar 14 and the periphery of the opening 15, there by mounting the wheel 12 and member 10 for free rotation. A retaining disk 17 is secured to the end of the stem 11, by means of a screw 1S, clamping the collar 14 between said disk and wheel 12. Said disk 17 overlaps the rollers 16 and the inner side of the head 9, to retain said rollers in the opening 15, and to also hold the wheel 12 and member 10 assembled with the head. r1`he wheel 12 covers the opening 15 at one side and the disk 17 covers said opening at the opposite side, with the rollers 16 located between and abutting said wheel and disk.
The operating means includes a shaft 19 disposed at one side of the outer arm of the yoke 7 parallel therewith, and journaled in outstanding lugs or bearings 20 with which the head 9 is provided at one side of the recess 18, and a worm 21 is secured on the shaft between said bearings and meshes with the worm wheel 12. The opposite extremity of the shaft 9 is journaled in one flange of an angular bearing bracket 22 which is secured to the outer arm and intermediate portion of the yoke 7 and a crank shaft 23 is disposed parallel with said intermediate portion of the yoke and has its outer terminal journaled in the other ilange of the bracket 22. The adjacent ends of shafts 19 and 23 are operatively connected by bevel gears 24 secured thereon and meshing with one another. The shaft 28v is journaled through a bearing 25 secured to the inner arm of the yoke, andv said shaft has a hand crank 26 at its inner encl to lie conwenientlyv rotated by one hand while Clie einer hand. liolcls t-lie lie-nelle SQ The yoke 7 and operating ineens een tlius extend partly around or across en obstruction which prevents direct access te the bolt or srreiin and the bolt or screw engaging member ll() can thus be conveniently applied to the bolt or screw, and the crank 26 rotated for rotating' the shaft 19. The Worin 21 will rotate the Wlieel l2 und the member l0 -with considerably increased power, clue to the f'eer ratio. The lCevice can thus be userl rer tightening or loosening1 1bolts :incl screws in inriccessiiie pieces or -ofninc en obstruction on which the yoke 7 can be placed.
