Description

M. E. -TUTTLE MATCH SAFE Filed Aug. 29
L Ell/LI WITNESSES Patented Apr. 1, 1924.
3 UNITED STATES MARIE E. TU'ITLE, OF BUTTE, MONTANA.
IVIATCI-I SAFE. I .511
Application filed August 29, 1922. Serial No. 585,110.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIE E. TUTTLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and State of Montana, haveinvented a new and Improved Match Safe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to match receptacles and has particular reference to an improvement over a match safe in which Lets ters Patent of the United States No. 1,017,708, were issued to me on February 20, 1912.
One of the principal objects and advantages of the present invention resides in the provision of a match safe, which, in addition to having compartments for respectively constituting a magazine for live matches and a receptacle for burnt matches, includes a large storage space for additional boxes of matches to insure the same against fire risks.
As a further object the invention contemplates a match safe having a striking element which is so located and positioned as to insure the complete closure of the live match magazine prior to the ignition of the matches which are removed therefrom for use.
As a still further object the invention includes means" for facilitating the intr0duction of burnt matches into the receptacle therefor.
With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general mean ing ofthe terms in which the claim is expressed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front View of a match safe constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side View thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View which is taken approximately on the line indicated at'3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken approximately on the line indicated at 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, A designates a wall or other sup port and B a nail from which the match safe is adapted to be suspended. The match safe consists ofa body including side walls 10, top wall 11, a front wall 12 and an in clined bottom 'wall 13 which is provided with a forwardly extending upwardly curved portion 14. The side walls are provided with forwardly extending portions 15. The interior of the body of the safe is subdivided by a vertical partition 16 and horizontal partitions 17 and 18 into a lower front compartment 19 which constitutes a chamber for a burnt match receptacle 20, one of the side walls 10 being provided with an opening through which the receptacle 20 is slidable into the compartment 19 and which receptacle is in the nature of a drawer. A transverse opening or slot 21 is formed in the front wall and a deflector plate 22 is disposed at an angle and projects at opposite sides of the front wall with the lower inner end overlying the receptacle 20 to afford means for facilitating the introduction of burnt matches to the receptacle. The remaining space which lies in rear of the compartment 19 andover the same, is subdivided into front and rear compartments 23 and 24 by an upwardly projecting hinged partition 25 which is hinged as at 26 to the walls defining the compartment 19. The partition is provided with a notch 27 at its upper edge to afford a viewing opening for the interior ofthe compartment 23 and to afford a means through which the finger may be inserted for swinging the partition on its hinges 26. The lower end of the rear compartment 24 communicates with a magazine chamber 28 and the match boxes C are arranged in said compartments 23 and 24, the lowermost box G being open to allow the matches to gravitate into the magazine chamber. The rear side of the body is open and is provided with an upwardly projecting bottom flange 29 and inwardly project ing side flanges 30, while the top is provided with an upwardly projecting flange 31. The rear wall 32 is slidable between the flanges 29 and 30 and 31. The rear wall 32 is apertured as at 33 and the flange 31 is apertured as at 34 and said apertures are brought into alignment to receive the nail or other suspending means B which also constitutes a means for holding the rear wall in covering relation. A cover 35 for the forwardly projecting portion of the maga- Zinc chamber 28 is hinged as at 36 to the lower end of the front Wall, and has arranged on its upper face an abrasive striking element 37.
In use the match boxes are stored in the compartments 23 and 24k and access to the live matches in the magazine chamber 28 is gained by lifting the cover 35. In order to strike and ignite the match, the cover 35 must of necessity be closed to dispose the striking element 37 in a position to be reached. After the matchhas been ignited, the same is disposed of by introducing it through the slot or opening 21 Where it will be guided by the deflector plate 22 into the burnt match receptacle 20.
I claim: v
As a new article of manufacture, a match safe comprising a main body portion and a forwardly extending portion at the lower end thereof having an open top and constituting a magazine chamber, a cover hinged to the front Wall of the main body portion for normally covering said extension, a striking element on the top of said cover, said main body portion being sub-divided into compartments, one of which communicates with the magazine chamber, another of Which overlies the forwardly projecting portion and has an opening through the front Wall With a deflector plate extending therethrough to facilitate the introduction of burnt matches thereto, and a hinged vertical partition defining a third compartment for the storage of a supply of match boxes, said hinged partition having a notch in its upper edge constituting respectively a viewing opening to the interior of the compartment, and means for the insertion of the finger to swing said partition to open position.
MARIE E. TUTTLE.
