To all whom it may] concern:
Be it known that 1," VVILLIAM T. HULSCI-IER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Cutting Machines,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in,
cutting machines.
vMy improved cutting machine is especially j a designed by me for cutting cotton wadding although readily adapted and desirable'for use in cutting resilient fibrous material and fabrics and the like.
The main objectof the invention are:.
First to provide an improved cutting ma.- chine adapted for the cutting of cotton wadding which produces clean-cut edgesin the. material and is of large capacity.
Second, to provide an improved machine for cutting resilient material which is simple and economical in structure and very easily operated. 4
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of'my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
- Fig. I is a side view partially invertlcal longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line 11 of Fig. II.
Fig. II is a fragmentary top plan view, one end only being illustrated the other end being a duplicate thereof, the cutter being shown in operative position.
FigpIII is a cross section'through the cutter standard and knife or cutter blade.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, I provide a base 1 having suitable legs,'thebase and legs being preferably an integral casting. T he top ofithe base is machined'to provide a bearing surface for the cutter base 2. This ,cutter'base is provided with a bear-- ing pivot 8, the base 1 having a series of bearings 4 adapted to :receive this pivot. A groove 5 extends longitudinally of the base asa guide for the pivot facilitating the shifting of' the pivot from onebearing to I another, the groove extendingbetween and openlng to the bearings so that the pivot may. be withdrawn -from the bearing and slidfalong in ithe' groove-by which it is guided to the succeeding pivot.

This blade is reciprocated by the motor, indicated at 16, the motor being mounted upon the standard. The motor base is'provided' with a handle .17. bymeans of whichthe cutter may be advanced to the work, being guided in its movement by the pattern openings inthe clamping plates and the base 2 swinging about. its pivot.-' The knife reeiprocates across the edges of the clamping plateswhichserve .as shear members. The pattern openings 13 are connected by the slots 18 so thatthe cutter maybe readily shifted from one' 'pattern opening to the succeeding pattern opening.
With this arrangement of parts, the-resilient material, such as cotton wadding,
may be rapidly out with very. clean cut edges to the work.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as-new and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is:
1. In amachine for cutting wadding, the combination with a base provided with ase ries of spaced .pivot bearingsanda pivot guiding groove extending betweenand openmg to said bearings, a bottom clamping plate mounted onsaid'base in spaced relation thereto, guide .rods projecting above justnient, clamping means for said clamping said bottom clamping plate, a top clamping plate mounted on said rods for vertical adplates, a cutter base provided with a pivot pin adapted to be engaged in said bearings in said base plate, said groove in said base constituting a guiding means for said pivot facilitating the shifting from one bearing to' another, a standard carried by said cutter base and constituting a cutter guide, a cutter reciprocating in said guide, and a cutter driving means mounted on said'standard,
spaced relation thereto, guide rods projectbig above said bottom clamping plate, a top clamping plate mounted on said'rods for vertical adjustment, clamping means for said clamping plates, a cutter baseprovided with a pivotpin adapted to beengaged in said bearings in said base plate,a standard carried by said cutter base and constituting a cutter guide, a cutter reciprocating in said 7 guide, and a cutter driving means mounted on said standard, said clamping plates being provided with guide openings and constituting shear members coacting with said cutter, there being communicating .slots [between said guide openings permitting the shifting of the cutter from one to another in succession.
3. In a machine for cutting wadding, the combination with a base provided with a series of'spaced'pivot bearings and a pivot guiding groove extending between and opening to said bearings, a pair of coacting clamping plates, a cutter base provided with a pivot pin adapted to be engaged in said bearings in said base plate, said groove in said base constituting a guiding meansv for said pivot: facilitating the shifting from one bearing to another, a standard carried by said cutter base and constituting a cutter 'guide, a knife reciprocating in said guide,
and aknifedriving means mounted on said standard, said clamping plates being pro-' vidcd with guide openings and constituting shear members with Which coacts, there being communicating slots between said guide openings permitting the shifting 'o fthe cutter from one to another in succession. V i

a top clampingplate mounted on said rods for vertical adjustment, clampingmeans for said clamping plates, a cutter base provided with a pivot pin adapted to be engaged in said hearings in said base plate, said groove in said base constituting a guiding means for said pivot facilitating the shifting from one bearing to another, and a cutter carried by said cutter base, said clamping plates being provided with guide openings for said outter, there being communicating slots between said guide openingg permitting the shifting of the cutter from one to another.

In a machine for. cutting wadding, the combination with a base provided with a series of spaced vertically disposed pivot bearings, a bottom clamping plate mounted on said base in spaced relation thereto, guide rods projecting above said bottom clamping plate, a top clamping plate mounted on said rods for .Vertical adjustment, clamping means for said clamping plates, a cutter base provided with a pivot pin adapted to be engaged in said bearings in said base plate, and acutter carried by said cutter 7 base, said'clamping plates being provided with guide openings for said cu tt er,there being communicating slots between said guide openings permitting theshifting of the cutter from one to another;
