Description

JOHN J". OBRIEN AND J HARDY QBRIEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FRUIT PRESS.
Application filed November 5, 1923. Serial No. 672,872.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN J. OBRIEN and J HARRY OBRIEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Fruit Press, of which the following is a specification. A
The present invention relates to kitchen utensils, the primary object of the invention being to provide a device especially designed to mash and skin potatoes or the like after they have been boiled.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be used with facility as a fruit press. 7 A further important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily disassembled to facilitate the cleaning thereof.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the body portion of the device in which the articles to be mashed are positioned.
This body portion has its side and bottom walls perforated as clearly shown by Figure 1 of the drawing 50 that material may pass from the body portion 5 when the device is in use.
Formed at a point adjacent to the upper edge of the body portion 5 are enlargements 6 which enlargements are designed to move within the grooves 7 of the handle portion 8 to lock the body portion into position and insure against displacement of the body portion. The upper edge of the body 5 is formed with a flange 9 adapted to restrict to the circular supporting member 10 of the movement of the body portion with respect.
handle 8, when pressure is brought to bear on the follower to be hereinafter more fully described.
Due to this construction, it is obvious that the body 5 may, by a slight rotation thereof, be moved to a position where the enlargements 6 will register with the clearances indicated at 11 and provided at the ends of the grooves 7, allowing the body portion to be removed from the circular supporting member 10.
The circular supporting member is provided with a forwardly extended portion 12 which includes upwardly extended ears 13 and an upwardly and rearwardly extended portion 14 that acts as a stop to be en gaged by the nose 15 of the handle 16 when the handle 16 is moved to allow material to be placed in the body portion 5, thereby insuring against the followers 17 being accidentally moved to a position remote from the body 5.
The handles 8 and 16 are formed preferably by bending a length of sheet metal transversely of its length providing spaced flanges 19, which flanges of the handle 16 are formed with openings 20 adapted to receive the fingers 21 formed at the upper ends of the arms 22 that carry the follower 23 at their lower ends. Thus it will be seen that by pressing the arms 22 towards each other, the fingers 21 may be removed from the opening to allow the follower to be disconnected for cleaning purposes.
It might be further stated that these fingers 21 extend outwardly and upwardly providing shoulders to be engaged by the upper walls of the openings 20 so that movement of the arm 16 will be transmitted to the follower.
Connecting the cars 12 is a pivot pin 24f that provides a bearing for the arm 16 whereby the arm may pivot freely with rc- Spect to the arm 8 to accomplish the purpose of the invention.
In the use of the device, the handle 16 is moved to the limit of its outward movement whereupon the follower 23 rests in a position at the upper edge of the body 5, allowing material to be positioned in the body 5.
After the body 5 has been sufiiciently filled, the follower 28 is moved to engage the material, whereupon the handles 16 and 8 are moved towards each other, to the end that the follower is forced downwardly in the body 5 forcing material contained in the body 5 through the perforations of the body portion.
While we have shown and described a device especially designed for mashing or ricing potatoes, it is to be understood that the device may be efficiently employed for pressing fruit in the making of jellies wines or the like.
We claim 1. In a-device of the character described,-
a circular supporting member, a handle formed integral therewith, a body portion r'emovably mounted in the supporting memher, a handle having pivotal connection with the supporting member, flanges forming a part of the last mentioned handle, said flanges having openings, a "follower includ inga pair of spaced arms, adapted to move 'intothebody portion, fingers formed at the upper ends of the arms and adapted to be positioned injt he openings of the flanges to secure the follower to the pivoted handle mei'nber, and means for restricting movement "of the follower with respect to the body portion.
2. In a device of the character described,
a circular -su'pporting member having a handle formed thereon, a body portion removably mounted in the supporting member, a handle having pivotal connection with the supporting member, a follower pivotally connected with the last mentioned handle and adapted to move within the body portion to force material therethrough, and means forming a part of the circular supporting member and adapted to engage the second mentioned handle to restrict movement of the second mentioned handle and prevent the fol-lower frombein'g moved to a position exteriorly of the body portion when the device is in operation.
3. In a device of the character described, a supporting member, a pretorated body portion removably mounted within the supporting meml-ier, a handle fornied integral with the supporting member, a pivoted handle mounted on the supporting member, a follower including resilient arms, means for connecting the arms to the pivoted handle section, the resiliency of the arms adapted to hold the arms into engagement with the pivoted handle section. In testimony that we-claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto affixed our signatures.
