ADVERTISNG DEVICE.
Application lecl February 14.-, 192B.
T all 105mm 15 may concern.'
Beitknown that I, Gusrnvn C. Brommer, residing at 104,41 90th Avenue,'lliclimond Hill, in thecounty of Queens, city and State of New York, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented a ners7 and useful `improvement in Advertising Devices, of which the following isa. specification.
This inventionrelates to new and useful 10 improvements in advertising devices and has for its principal object to providea device forv the display of advei .rising cards, posters .and the like in combination with news pictorials.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision lof a device which may be illuminated so that its utility is materially `en hanced as its functions may be performed afterdark, as well as during daylight hours.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a display device in `which independently, and interchangeably supported advertising cards or posters may be retainedon display in such a manner as to permit their ready removal and substitution.
'As another object, this invention contemplates the provision of light diffusing means for the artijlicial illuminating devices, so designed as to effectively diffuse the light rays over the display surface and at the same time prevent the rays from striking into the eyesof an observer.
As a further object the invention contemplates the provision of an ornamental housing designed to protect the advertising and news matter from the ravages of the elements and to provide a suitable door so arranged lto permit ready access to the advertising and news matter as well as to the interior of the illumina-ting device containing chambers, so that the illuminating devices may be readily changed and substituted in the event they should become in-V Serial No. 618,886.
this improved display device, showing a portion of the same in section Figure .2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
side of the tcp wall 13 is a plate 15, the forward edge of which o-verhangs the front of the device as at 16 as clearly shown in Fig ure 3;
`Securei'l at the forward edges of the side and end walls 12, 13 and 14; are strips 17 forming pockets or chambers 18, for housing illuminating devices 19, such as electric lamps.
Secured to and extending forwardly from the back wall 11 are vertically extending plates 2O of a suitable light diffusing material such as ground glass, and extending in the same manner iron; the back wall 11 are horizontally disposed plates 21 of a similar substance. lt is to be noted that these plates are spaced inwardly with relation to the side, top and bottom walls so as to form a Complete enclosure for the illuminatingdcvices 19, but are likewise spaced inwardly from the inner edges of the strips 17 to provide a space through which access to the chambers 18 may be had when it is desired to adjust or change the'illuminating devices.
A door designated generically by the numeral 22 is hingedly supported to one of the vertical strips v17 andpis of such'size as to wholly close the openino' between the inner edgesof the said strips. This'door comprises a frame formed of the vertical strips 23 and the horizontal strips 24 which are secured together at opposite ends to support a transparent panel 25 of glass or a similar material.
As illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, these strips 23 and 2t are of such width as to provide closeness for the spaces between the `disturbing the advertising mattei'.
inner edges of the strips 17 and the plates 2O and 2l, so as to exclude dust and at the same time prevent the escape of light from the chambers 1S. Obviously easy access to the chambers may be had when the door is open.
Secured to the back wall l1 adjacent the inner sides of the plates 2O and 2l are strips 26 which are substantially Tshaped in cross section to provide overhanging l[langes for retaining the advertising cards in place.
Similar T-shaped strips 27 are secured to the wall 11 in spaced relation to the strips 2Gv to provide a cent al space surrounded by a? border of equal Width on all sides. As shown in Figures 2 and 3 the inner flanges oi the strips 27 are designed to overlie the edges of a panel 2S of a soft substance such as cork or white pine, in order to retain said panel in place.
It is preferable that said panel 28 be covered with a suitable fabric 29 such as bui'lap, but it is to be understood that such covering may be dispensed with it so desired.
In order to removably secure the advertising cards in proper position, there are provided tlie dividing strips 30 which are substantially T-shaped in cross section to provide overhanging flanges 3l, and formed at opposite ends of said strips in longitudinal alignment with the stem, are oppositely eX- tending tongues 32 which areadapted to be received beneath the adjacent flanges of the strips 26 and 27. Such arrangement will allow the dividing strips toV be readily adjusted to t advertising cards oft varying width. f
In use, suitable advertising cards are placed in the border and retained beneath the i'langes of the stationary and dividing Vstrips and news pictures and similar matter is secured to the panel 28 by means of fastening devices such as push pin or thumb tacks.
Obviously the news matter may bev changed as frequently as desired without Likewise it is possible to change the. advertising mattei' without necessarily changing the news matter.
Further the illuminatingmeans may be kept in proper repair by gaining access to the chambers 18 through the spaces between the strips 17 and plates 20 and 2l. V
While in the Jforegoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that certain minor changes in the details otconstructio-n, combination and arrangement Y of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope. olz the invention as claimed. Y
`What is claimed is l. An advertising device comprising a housing, translucent panels within the hous-V ing in spaced relation to the top, bottom and side walls, said walls and panels forming chambers, permanent Vplates partiallyroverying the front open sides of the chambers, a transparent door for closing" the `front or the housing, the door trame being so arranged as to co-operate with the permanent panels in completely closing the chambers, illuminating means within said chambers and means in the rear Wall oft the housing 'for supporting advertising and news matter.
2. An advertising device comprising, a
housing open at oneV side, translucent panels Y arranged in spaced parallel relation to the top, bottom and end walls of the housing to form chambers, permanent strips secured to the housing and partially overlying the front open sides of the chambers, a trans- Vso parent doo-r for closing the front of the the housing and partially overlying the front Y open sides of the chambers, a transparent door fior closing` the front of the housing, the frame of said dooi co-operating with the strips Vin completely closing the open sides oi the chambers, flanged strips secured to the front face ot the back wall of theV housing, spaced parallel. flanged strips associated therewith, land adjustable spacing strips extending transversely between the first named strips, illuminating means in the chambers and tongues on theV ends of the adjustable strips for engaging beneath the flanges of the stationary strips whereby said adjustable strips Awill be removably and adjustably held.
