. UNITED STATES FRANK M.. FAHLOR, 0F MANOR-VILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
FEED GAUGE.
Application ined January 23, 1923. seriai 1ro. 614,414;
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK M. FAHLoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manorville, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feed Gauges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to feed gauges, and more particularly to a. feed gauge adapted foruse in connection wit-h platen print-ing presses.
One of themain objects of the invention is to provide a gauge device of simple construction and operation which may be readily applied to a platen and the tympan clamping bails therefor without necessitat- `ing any changes in construction of the platen or any material changes in the bails. A further object is to provide gauges which have a great range of adjustment and which occupy but little space. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the gauges as applied;
Figure 2 is a side view;
Figures 3, 4, and 5 are sect-ions Ataken substantially on lines 3 3, 114-4, and 5 5, respectively, of Fig. 1;
Figure 6 is a detail of a modified .form of gauge section;
Figure 7 is a plan view, partly in section, of a modified form of clamping and supporting frame;
Figure 8 is a inoditied form of side gauge:
Figure 9 is another modified form of gauge section:
Figure 10 is a section taken substantially on line 10-10 of Fig. 9.
The gaugesare to be used in connection with a platen A of standard type provided withfthe usual backing ortympan B which is held tightly stretched over the platen and is securely clamped in position by bails C of substantially elongated U-shape which are pivotally secured by rivets or screw pins c to the sides of platen A. The platen and parts associated Vtherewith are of standard construction and. form no part of my inven-l tion except in so far as they co-operate with means to be hereinafter described for supporting the gauges.
A supporting frame 1 of elongated U-shape titsV about one of the bails C and is pivoted to the bail at opposite ends thereof, by means of pins 2, so as to be adjustable about an axis extending longitudinally of the bail. Each arm 1a of this frame is provided with an arcuate slot 3 disposed con centric with pin 2, this slot receiving a screw stud 4 secured in the arm of bail C. A wing nut 5 is threaded onto stud 4: and coacts with arm 1a and the stud for securing frame l in adjustment about pins 2. The bight portion 1b of frame 1 is provided with a longitudinally extending groove lc and with a rabbet 1d for. receiving gauge blocks-6 slidable on bight portion 1. Each of the blocks 6 is provided, in itsI upper face, with a transversely extending dovetail-groove 7 which slidably receives a lower gauge section S the lateral edges of which are beveled to tit within groove 7; A screw stud 9 is secured. in block 'adjacent to groove 7 and receives a nut 10 which projects above lower gauge lsection 8 for securing the same in adjustment in block 6. Lower gauge section S is provided, in its underface, with a longitudinally extending groove which slid-v ably receives an upper gauge section 11 provide-d with a screw stud 12 which projects ,r
through a slot 13 provided through section 8 for this purpose. A nut 14 is threaded on stud 12 for securing sections 11V and8 in relative adjustment. This provides a telescoping gauge of very simple and eiicient construction which has a great range of adjustment and can be quickly and accurately adjusted vas desired.
Upper gauge section 1'1 is provided, at its upper end, with a transversely lextending head 15 provided in its' upper face with a groove 16. A plate'l is secured to the upper face of head 15 kand is provided with a. downwardly curved resilient linger -18 which presses Vupon the upper face of a resilient tongue 19 which is inserted through groove 16and is confined between finger-18 and upper gauge section 11 which cooperate to hold tongue 19in adjustment. The bottom gauges indicatcd'generally by 20 project a predetermined .distanceo-ver the upperface of the platen, the heads 15 resting upon the backing or tympan B so as to form stops for limiting movement of a .sheet of paper toward the bottom of the'platen. yThe side gauges indicated generally by 21 is constructed similarlyto bottom lgauges 2O with the exception thatV head 15 and the parts associated therewith' are v directed at. right angles to the heads 15 of bottom gauges 20. rlhe side gauge21 servesto limit means for securing said sections in adjustment,uppe11 gauge sections slidably mounted in the lower sections, said lower sections being provided with longitudinally extending slots, the upper gauge sections being provided with screw studs projecting through said slots, nuts threaded on said studs and contacting with the lower gauge sections for securing said lower and upper sections in ad justinent, and stop members carried by the upper gauge sections at the upper ends thereof.
7. In a device of the character described, a frame of substantially elongated U-shape, blocks carried by said frame, lower gauge sections slidable transversely of the blocks, means for securing said sections in adjustment, upper gauge sections slidably mounted in the lower sections, said lower sections being provided with longitudinally extending slots, the upper gauge sections being provided with screw studs projecting through said slots, nuts threaded on said studs and contacting with the lower gauge sections for securing said lower and upper sections in adjustment, stop members carried 'by the upper gauge sections at the upper ends thereof, and index points carried by the upper sections and projecting through said slots, the lower gauge sections being graduated adjacent to the lateral edges of the slots.
In testimony whereof I alx my signature.
