Be it known that I, MiLo SHUTT, alcitizen ot the United States, residing-at Alliance, in the county of Stai-'kand State ;of- O hio, have invented a new-and-fusefullmprovement in Combined Soaking-Pit, Twisting and Stripper Cranes, of Whichthe ,ollowing is a full, clear, and exactdescriptionj vThe present invention relates .blOLdly Vto Ycrane mechanism, and more particularly to ner from an ingot `produced in a bottom pour. mold, landthen Without change utilized ioicarrying the ingot and'mold to any desired point, and stripping-themold {therefrom. l
Still another object of the `present invention is to provide a traveling crane ,comprising a supporting trolley orcarriage for all of the hoisting, twisting-and stripping mechanism, all of which mechanism may be independently or simultaneouslyl operating Without corresponding movement Aof any part of the trolley or carriage. 1
A further ob 'ect of the .present invention is to provide acrane ofthe type described, comprisingafbull nose which. .may be :operated at any position of the hoisting'tongs.
A still further object `of the'inveiition is to provide tongs which are -e'ective for i hoisting either ingots vor vmolds of varying sizes and contours. l.

The lower; end of the rectangular casing-10 carries a. bearing l1,v lia-vingja,central lhub 12 Within which 4is frotatably .mounted a sleeve 14.' .'.Splined to thefloiverportion of VJthe sleeve v.soasto be rotated in unison therewith, is ,a-second sleeve, 15,-having formed on .its lowerend ,a crosshead 16; :to theouter ends of Which'are pivoted, intermediate their length, ,the vtongs 17.A The lower vends ofthe 'sheave block 26, the tubular member be correspondingly raised or lowered and the tongs are provided both with gripping recesses 18 and points 19, thereby adapting the same for utilization with molds and vingots of various sizes and contours. rllhe upper ends of the tongs 17 are provided with rollers 2O fitting the inclined guide-ways 21 on the tongs 17 closed or opened respectively. This movement of the sheave block 26 is accom-V plished in the usual manner by means of cables 27, which cables are attached at one end to a hoisting drum 28 and from thisk point each of the cables passes downwardly around one of the inner sheaves 29, and
thence upwardly over the fixed idler 80 carried by the trolley 6 within the protecting casing 8. From the idlers 30 each of the cables again passes downwardly around one of the other sheaves 31 in the sheave block 26 and thence upwardly over one of the sheaves 82 to a counterweight 34. Each of the sheaves 32 may be of any desired construction but is preferably built in accordance with the patent to Kendall No. 1,286,089, so that the maximum lifting pow r which may be imparted to the cables is limited. Rotation is imparted to the sheaves 82 by means of a tongs operating motor 34 connected to the sheaves through the usual gearing 85.
For rotating the tongs for the purpose of twisting the ingot free from the runner produced during the bottom pour operation, there is splined to the sleeve 14 a gear 86 meshing with a spur gear 87 on the lower end of the square twisting shaft 38. This shaft may be suitably journaled below the gear V37 in the bearing 11. The upper end of the shaft telescopes in driving relation within a tubular shaft 39 carried by the trolley 6 in which it is journaled and provided at its upper end with a gear 40 meshing with a similar gear 41 on the shaft 42. This shaft is adapted to be rotated by thetwisting motor 44 having the usual reduction gear 45 driving the bevel gears 46.
From the foregoing `it will be apparent that means are provided which may be operated independently or simultaneously for opening or closing the tongs and for rotating the tongs. It is also essential that means be provided for hoisting the tongs so that the ingot and mold may be carried to the desired point. This is accomplished by hoisting cables 47 secured at one end to the drum 28 and then each passing around one of the inner sheaves 48 in the sheave block ca rried by the rectangular casing 10. From the sheaves 48 the cables pass upwardly around the fixed idlers 49 corresponding to the fixed idlers 30 and thence downwardly over the outer sheaves 51. From these sheaves the cables pass over idle pulleys 52 to the counterweight 54. Y The drum28 is provided on its opposite ends with right and left grooves 55 in which the hoisting cables are adapted to lie and corresponding grooves 56 in which the tongs operating cables 27 are adapted to lie. rllhe drum 28 is adapted to be driven in the usual manner by the hoisting motor 59 through suitable'gearing. Upon actuation of the motor 59 the drum 28 will be rotated to simultaneously wrap therearound both the cables 27 and the cables 47, so that the rectangular casing 10 and all of the mechanism carried thereby will be simultaneously raised within the protecting casing 8 in the guideways 9. v
The present construction is adapted, however, to perform an additional operation usually referred to as stripping. VThis is performed by providing a bull nose 60 located within the tubular member 24, and having' its upper end threaded through the nut 61 carriedvby the sleeve 62 suitably journaled within the intermediate sheave block 49. The sleeve 62 has splined thereto a stripping gear 64 meshing with a similar gear 65 on the square shaft 66. This shaft, in the manner of the twisting shaft 38, is slidable in driving relation within the tubular shaft 67 carried by the trolley 6 and adapted to be rotated by the stripping motor 68 through the reduction gearing 69, the bevel gears 70 and the spur gears 71, as will be readily understood. *When the stripping motor 68 is operated, the shaft 66 will be rotated which will in turn impart rotation to the nut 61 causing the bull nose 60 to travel upwardly or downwardly. lf forced downwardly while the mold is snpported to the tongs 17, it will be apparent that the ingot will be pushed dow .vardly out of the mold.
rllhe advantages of the present invention arise from a construction with which it is possible to perform all of the functions of a soaking pit crane, a twisting crane and a stripper crane. Further advantages arise from the provision of means whereby the operations may be independently or siniul taneously carried out.
Still further advantages arise from the provision of a rigidly supported traveling carriage on which are located the various operating motors, which motors are capable of producing the required movements without a corresponding movement of any part of the carriage itself. y
I claim: 1. A crane comprisingv hoisting means, twisting means, stripping means operable independently of said twisting means, and mechanism for operating any of said means at will, substantially as described.
2. A crane comprising tongs, means for rotating said tongs, means for hoisting said tongs, a stripper cooperating therewith, and means independent of said first mentioned means for operating said stripper, substantially as described.
3. A crane comprising tongs, means for rotating saidtongs, means for hoisting said tongs, a bull nose cooperating therewith, and means independent of said first mentioned means for operating said bull nose to strip an ingot from lthe mold while supported by said tongs, substantially as described.
4. A carried by said support, a casing slidable in said guides, tongs mounted for bodily movement relative to said casing, means for causing relative bodily movement between said casing and tongs, means cooperating with said tongs for positively vopening and closing the same upon relative bodily movement between said tongs and casing, and means for simultaneously hoisting said casing and tongs, substantially as described.
5. A crane comprising a support, guides carried by said support, a casing slidable in said guides, tongs mounted for bodily movement relative to said casing, means for causing relative bodily movement between said casing and tongs, means cooperating with said tongs for opening and closing the same upon relative bodily movement between said tongs and casing, means for simultaneously1 hoisting said casing and tongs, a stripper movable independently of said casing, and means for operating said stripper, substantially as described.
6. A crane comprising a support, guides carried thereby, a casing slidable in said guides, tongs carried by said casing, means for simultaneously hoisting said casing and said tongs, means for opening and closing said tongs, means for rotating said tongs, stripping mechanism co-operating with said tongs, and means independent of said last mentioned means for operating said stripping means, substantially as described.
