Be it known that T, JoHN HEIsEL, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Mount Healthy, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Punch Press, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the operation of die presses in which a series of dies are employed to work upon a given blank in various combinations and at different times.
An object of my invention is to provide a simple and efiicient means to control relative movements of cooperative dies.
Another object is to provide means adapted to assure positive locking of a. series of dies during the simultaneous movement of such dies.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein and disclosed in the accompanying drawing in which:

Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are sectional views on reduced scale showing the dies in Various positions My invention resides primarily in the movable pin K adapted to control the relative movements of the movable dies C, G, and H of a punch press.
In my invention as disclosed in the accompanying drawings, A is a fixed gib within which is slidably mounted a head or slide B. The blank holder C is fixedly secured upon the head B and has a central bore a in alignment with the central bore 6 in the hear B. The lower surface 0 of the blank holder is adapted to cooperate with the upper surface d of fixed die D between which the blank E is disposed at the beginning of the operation, The movable shaft F is adapted to extend thru and be reciprocated thru the bore 5 in the head B and is adapted to be reciprocated by any means common in the art A circumferential groove f is formed in the shaft F. The lower end f of shaft F is screw threaded and has mounted upon it the die G. The die G has a shoulder 9 formed thereon, such shoulder extending beyond the shaft F and serving to prevent separation of the primary die mounted about the secondar die G from i adapted to be reciprocated radially thru such die, whereby the outer end of said pin will extend into the circumferential groove 0 formed in the blank holder, or the inner end of the pin will extend, into the groove f formed in the shaft F. The pin K has a collar is formed thereon, such collar afford ing an abutment which one end of the spring is, contained within the transverse slot or bore, engages. A slotted block 71. is disposed within the slot and provides an abutment which the other end of the spring engages. The spring tends to project the inner end of the pin K into the groove f in the shaft F. The spring F serves normally to yieldingly retain the primary die in engagement with the shoulder 9 formed on the secondary die G.
The operation of my device is as follows:
Normally the blank holder is raised from the fixed die D and the shaft F is raised to such extent that the primary and secondary dies H and G respectively are at the upper end or over the bore in the blank holder C. The slide B and the shaft F are moved toward the fixed die D in a manner common in the art. The primary and secondary dies move together and are maintained in engagement with one another by means of the pins K. The blank holder engages the blank E and remains stationary, the dies G and H continuing their movement thru the blank holder until the pins K register with the slot 0 in the blank holder. Due to the fact that the die H is working on the blank E, the pressure exerted on pins K, but until the pins register with the groove 0 the wall of the bore in the die holder precludes the movement of pins K from the groove 7 in shaft F. When the pins register with groove 0 the pins are moved into groove 0 against the pressure of the springs is and the die G is freed from the die H Die H remains affixed to the blank holder and die G continues its movement. On the return of the dies to their normal positions, the springs cause the pins H tends to unseat the holder and having a to enter the groove 7 in the shaft F when the groove registers with the pins, whereby the die H is moved with, the die G.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described the combination of a reciprocating blank holder having a bore the wall of which has a groove therein, a primary die adapted to be reoiprocated in the bore in the blank holder and having a transverse slot and a bore therein, a secondary die adapted to be reciprocated in the bore in the primary die and having a groove therein, a pin reciprocally mounted in the transverse slot in the primary die and extending therefrom adapted to lodge in the grooves in the blank holder and the secondary die, and means operative upon the pin and yieldably holding the pin in engagement with the secondary die.
2. In a device of the class described the combination of a reciprocating blank holder having a bore the wall of which has a groove therein, a primary die adapted to be reciprocated in the bore in the blank transverse slot and a bore therein, a secondary die adapted to be reoiprocated in the bore in the primary die and having a groove therein, a pin reciprocally mounted in the transverse slot in the primary die and extending therefrom adapted to lodgealternately in the grooves in theblank holder in the secondary die, and a spiingdisposed within the transverse slot and yieldingly maintaining the pin in engagement with the secondardy die.
3. Inca device of the class described the combination of three reciprocable telescopic dies, means for moving the dies in unison, means for checking movement of the outer most die, and a means normally securing the inner dies upon one another whereby to'secure unitary movement thereof, and for causing fixation of the outer two dies whereby to provide independent v movement of the inner most die.
