Description

EDWARD HEATH, OF FOWLERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
PUNCHING-MACI-IINE.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 14,866, dated May 13, 1856.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD HEATH, of Fowlersville, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Punching-Machine; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2, is a horizont-al section of the same, (an), Fig. 2, showing the plane of section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures. My invention consists in having a series of punches varying sizes lit-ted in a rotating cylinder and arranged with a plunger rod, as will be presently shown and described, whereby either of the punches in the cylinder, may by rotating the same, be brought in line with the plunger rod and underneath it and acted upon by said rod.
By this improvement the several punches may be readily changed or adapted to the plunger rod.
T o enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents an upright att-ached to a proper base B, and C, O, represent two horizontal arms on t-he upright A. The upper arm O, has a pendent D, attached to it near its outer end, and through this pendent a shaft E, passes, said shaft having an eccentric F, upon it to which a pitman G, is attached by a strap H. The pitman G, is attached to a plunger rod I, which works through the lower arm C.
J, represents a cylinder placed vertically on the base B, its lower part working on a center pivot on the base and its upper part having a shaft or rod K, passing into it at its center. The cylinder has three circular horizontal flanches (b), (79'), (6),attached to it in the two upper one of which vertical punches L, of varying sizes and forms are fitted near the peripheries of the flanches, the punches being allowed to work or slide freely in the flanches. To the lower flanch (5) holsters (c), are attached in line with the punches L.
The 'upper ends of the punches have pins (al), attached to them which pins rest upon the edge of a circular plate M, attached to the under side of the lower arm O, the pins and plate sustaining the punches or preventing them from falling upon the lower flanch (5). The plate M, has a recess or notch (e), made in it directly opposite the plunger rod I, and a notch or recess (f), is made in the outer side of each punch at its upper part. The lower end of the plunger rod has a recess cut in it, and a projecting lip (g), is formed there on, said lip being of such a size as to fit in the notches (f), in the punches.
N, is a spring attached to the base B, said 'spring having a pin (7L), at its outer end.
This pin fits in holes made in the periphery of the lower flanch (12).
The operation is as follows: The pin (7L), is withdrawn from the hole in which it is fitted and the cylinder J, is turned till the proper punch is brought` under the plunger rod I, the lip (g), fitting in the recess (f), in the punch and the pin (h), being forced by the spring N, into' one of the holes to retain the cylinder in proper position. By turning the shaft E, the plunger rod and punch which is attached to it Aare operated by the eccentric F, the article to be punched being placed upon the bolster (c), underneath the punch. The several punches may be used successively or either one of them as desired, by merely turning the cylinder J, and bringing the proper or desired punch in line with the plunger rod.
Bjy this invention the several punches may be changed or adjusted to the plunger rod with the greatest facility.-
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Placing a series of punches L, of varying sizes and forms in a flanched rotating cylinder J, arranged -relatively with the plunger rod I, as shown so that by rotating the cylinder either of the punches may be brought in line and connected with the plunger rod I, substantially as described.
EDWARD HEATH.
