California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of fire extinguisher ofthe stationary system 1 type, which is adapted to automatically operate on thetemperature ofan enclosure arriving at-- or. exceeding a predetermined degree.
The invention consists primarily in. acontainer orvessel suspended at an angle, and
which, when the temperature in the enclosure, rises above a predetermined point, automatically assumes a perpendicular depending position, and the weight thereof causes an operation of the container discharge mechanism to release the contents from the container for extinguishing purposes.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a distributor or spreader actuated by the fluid volume issuing from the container whereby the fluid is distributed by centrifugal force throughout a considerable area.
Other objects are to provide a simple and efficient construction adapt-ed to be readily installed, and one which is positive in its operation, and contains but few parts which are not liable to get out of order.
WVith the above mentioned and other ob jects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a View in elevation of the preferred embodiment of my invention illustrating in full lines a container in its normal position, and in dotted lines in its released or operative position.

Referringmore particularly to the several views of the drawings wherein like characters, of reference designate corresponding. parts, 1 indicates a. support, preferably the ceiling of a room or enclosure, to. which is secured by screws 3 the base 2, of a supporting frame. The frame at intervals is provided with the respective brackets 4 and 5, and depending from the same, preferably in -avertical plane, is an arm 6, braced asat 7, and the lower end ofvsaid arm is curved toprovide a sub: stantially horizontal portion 8 bent laterally at right angles to form an operating finger 9. Received in the bracket 5 is a yoke 10 at the upper end of a container 11 adapted to contain under pressure a suitable fire extinguishing fluid either liquid or gas. The fluid is adapted to discharge from the container through the spout 12 at the lower end thereof, the passage through which is controlled by a valve 13 mounting a stem 1 1. A frame 15 is carried by the spout 12 above the valve 13 and depends below the lower end of the spout, as in Figure 1, and the frame mounts in axial rotation, in line with the center of the dis charge spout 12, a conical spreader 16 rotatable on a stud 17, and is formed through its surface with fluid passages 18 extending radially from the surface of the spreader and disposed angularly thereon by the impact vanes 19 against which the fluid issuing from the spout 12 impinges, and causes a rotation of the spreader diflusing the fluid over a wide area.
With the bracket 4 is preferably associated an eye 20, and the same connects with a small yoke 21 on the side wall of the container 11 through a short section of fusible wire 22 or by means of any other well known type of temperature controlled supporting member. The wire 22 is of such length as to maintain the container depending at an angle from its point of support, and on the melting and fusing of the wire 22 the weight of the container causes the same to rapidly move toward the arm 6 in assuming a perpendicular position. In its movement into a perpendicular position the valve stem 14 engages the finger 9, which causes the valve to open and the contents to discharge through the spout 12 and strike the spreader 16 causing the same'to rotate, which action will distribute the fluid over a wide area. It will be observed that the arm 6 serves as an arresting medium for the container 11 in its movement from an inclined position.
To limit the opening of the valve 13 the same is provided with a pin 28 which is adapted to contact with the shoulder 29. To enable the extinguisher to be used as a hand device, the frame 15 is formed with a separatable lower. section enabling the cone to be removed and an unobstructed stream to discharge from the nozzle 12.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A fire extinguisher, including a closed elongated container provided at its upper end with a suspending yoke, a suspei'iding bracket co-operating with the yoke permitting angular swinging movement of the con tainer, a temperature controlled member connected with the container for suspending the same in an angular position, a discharge spout extending from the lower end of the container, a valve therein, a stem extending therefrom, an arm depending from said bracket for arresting the movement of the container on the release of said temperature controlled member, anda finger extension at the lower end of saidarm for operating said valve stem on said container assuming a substantially vertical position.
2. A fire extinguisher, including a closed container, means for suspending the container at a point above its center to permit one end thereof to swing downwardly, a temperature controlled member connected with the container for suspending the same in angular relation, a discharge spout ex tending from one end of the container, a
. valve therein, a stem extending therefrom,
means for arresting the movement of the container on the release of said temperature controlled member, and a part within the path of movement of said stein for engaging and operating said stem on said container assuming a substantially vertical position with the discharge spout downwardly disposed.
