Be it known that I, VALTER SMrTHERs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaold Horses, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to those devices used during building, painting or similar operations and known as scaffold horses and by means of which, in conjunction with planks or boards, a scaffolding of the desired height may be expeditiously erected in a well known manner to enable the workman to operate on a part normally beyond his reach.
The object of the invention is the production of a scaffold horse of substantial strength and rigidity which shall be simple in construction and cheap to manufacture and which shall be, by preference, of the knockdown type, thereby making for economy of space when not in use and corresponding cheapness in storage or shipping.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the accompanying description, the invention consisting in the novel parts and combinations thereof hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing showing a practical embodiment of the invention:

Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawing:
1 indicates one pair of the supporting legs for the device while 2 indicates the other pair thereof. The legs of each pair extend diagonally upwardly with a space obtaining intermediate the upper ends as illustrated, said spaces being of a width sufficient to snugly receive the body or top 3 of the device, said body or top comprising a rectangular-shaped board or beam. each pair are secured together by outer metallic cross plates 4 attached to the outer edges of the legs `and by inner metallic plates 5 attached to the inner edges of said legs, said plates being screwed or otherwise fastened to said edges by suitable nails, bolts or screws. All of said plates are provided with squared indentations or notches 6 adapted to slidably and snugly receive ythe body or top 3.
The body or top 3 is provided on its bottom adjacent either end thereof with a slot 7 which slots receive the edges of the inner plates 5 at the points where the notches 6 in said inner plates are located thus providing a detachable interlocking of said inner plates and body or top. Said inner plates 5 lie in a higher horizontal plane than the outer plates 4 as shown which by being disposed in different horizontal planes by Widening the bracing action vertically and cause the strains to which the device is subjected to be more fully distributed therethrough and consequently increases the strength. Also the body or top 3 when in position intermediate the ends of the legs is fully received by all the indentations or notches 6 in both the inner and outer plates for the reason that the side walls of the notches 7 straddle the inner plates 5 at their indented points as illustrated. The body or top 3 may be expeditiously and removably placed in proper position and when in position it is incapable of movement in any direction except an upward one and itvmay be detachably locked against an upward movement in the manner to be presently described.
8 indicates supporting bars comprising angle-irons the outer ends of which are flattened as at 9 and are secured to the outer edges of each pair of legs 1 and 2 by suitable screws or bolts or analogous fastening means. Each of said supporting bars is provided in the lower wall thereof with an open slot 10. The body or top 3 has secured thereto in any desirable manner and preferably equidistant from the ends thereof metallic supports 11 the ends of which are perforated and which receive the hooked ends of supporting'rods 12, whereby said rods are loosely but preferably nondetachably suspended from said supports l1. Said rods 12 are provided with screwthreaded ends 13 extending through and loosely carrying reinforcing angle-pieces 13 Y ends 13 of said rods and bearing against titi said angle-pieces. The angle-pieces 13 being interlocked by one angle with the side of the bar 8 opposite the slot not only act to eectively prevent the rods 12 from slipping out of the slotsA 10 but act as additional strengthening and supporting members for the'parts. y g y l 15 indicates longitudinal supporting members comprising angle-irons which are pivotally secured at one end as by the pivots 16 to the front faces of each of the legs 1 while the other endsthereof are provided with l.-slots 17 receiving pins 18 secured in the legs 2 whereby said pins will be drawnwithin said L-slots to ,detachably and automaticallylock the members 15 to thelegs 2 when the pairs of legs l and 2 are drawn towards each other 'by operation of the winged nuts 1a in the manner previously described. If so desired the pins 18 may be screw-threaded and may have screwed thereon winged nuts 19 which serve as additional locking or holding means for the parts.
It will beobvious from the above eX- plained construction that the body or top 3 is incapable of a vertical movement by the action of the rods 12 when the parts are set up and attached together and the device isA ready for use and that it is incapable Vof a longitudinal or "transverse movement due to its interlocking with the inner plates 5 and its supported position intermediate the ends of the legs. It will also be' apparent that the pairs of legs 1 and 2 are'prevented from rocking or swaying laterally or collapsing by means of the rigid members 15 which detachably hold them together, the top wall of said members 15 also providing la horizontal step or support whichmay be mounted when so desired.
VThe construction' of device described makes an exceedingly strong and substantial scaffold horsecapable of severe strains and stresses without danger of collapsing orv breakage. When not in use the parts may be disassembled and shipped or stored in three pieces to wit: two pairs of legs oner 'of which carries the members 15 and the of legs with a free space between the upper ends of the members of eachpair, crossing plates connecting said members at Y their outer and inner edges and disposed in different horizontalV planes and a detachable body fitting between and engaged by the upper ends of said pairs, said body andthe edges of said plates having respectively notches for establishing interlocking engagement between said body and said plates.

A scaffold horse comprising two pairs of legs each pair beingsp'aced apartadjacent their upper ends, cross-plates in pairs attached respectively at their ends to the inside and outsideof, and rigidly connecting together each pair of legs, a'body removably engaging the upper ends of said legs and notched to linterlock with saidplates, supporting bars secured to each pair of legs below said plates, rods secured to said body and detachably engaging said bars and longitudinal supporting members detachably astening the pairs of legs together.

A scaffold horse comprising two pairs of within and resting in the bottom of said indentations and provided with notches on its bottom receiving said plates, supporting bars secured to the edges of each pair of legs, rods swingingly secured to said body and detachably secured to said supporting bars, and supporting members comprisingl angle-bars pivoted to the front sides of two Y of said legs and detachably secured to the front sides of the other two legs.
