ROLLING WINDOW SCREEN.
Application filed March 21, 1919. Serial No. 283,978.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR YERLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gary, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rolling Window Screens, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention com rehends generally improvements in that (Sass of inventions known as curtains, shades and screens and more particularly relates to a rolling window screen.
The invention has for its principal aim and object to provide a device of the above mentioned character designed to be readily connected to the frame of a window and of a construction that is capable of being extended and fastened so as to completely close the window casing or else may be fastened and rolled up to permit of the complete detaching of the device from position when it is not desired to use the same.
More lparticularly the present invention contemp ates the rovision of a device of the above mentione character wherein improved cooperativemeans is mounted on the window frame and on the edges of the body of the screens for idin the screens when it is being adj and or preventing the screens from sag when extended.
It is a more speci c object of the present invention to rovide a device of the above mentioned 0 aracter wherein improved means is employed for detachably fastening the screens 1n an extended position; to also provide clamping means for'remforcmgv the guides.
It is an additional object of this invention to rovide a device of the above men tioned character which is sim la in construction, thoroughly reliable an efficient in its purpose and inexpensive in manufacture.
Other objects Wlll be in art obvious and in part hereinafter set fort The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, the combination of elements and the arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawin there is rovided a window frame or casmg 1 to w ich is detachably connected the improved rolling window screen generally designated by the numeral 2.
In reducing the present invention to practree a pair of opposed guides 3 are employed and each guide is formed desirably rom a single piece of sheet metal which is folded upon itself as at 4 providing spaced side portions 5 and 6 the inner of which is ofiset as at 7 while both of the side portions toward each other and arranged in spa parallel relation to provide bearing portions 8. Suitable fasteners such as screws 9 serve as a means for anchoring the ides in position on the opposite sides of t e window casing and near the outer faces thereof as indicated. The upper terminals of the guides ,are sha d to provide trunnion receivers 10 in whic are fitted the trunnions llof a spring roller 12. The body or screen 13 has one end secured to the 'roller 12 and is windable thereabout while also secured to the o posite sides of the body or screen 13 are stee tapes 14. Disk headed retainers 15 are now anchored to the tapes 14 adjacent their outer side edges and operate within the guides, the heads thereof bearing against the free inner edges of the bearing portions 8 of the guides so as to retain the tapes between the adjacent faces of the bearing portions, these parts cooperating in. gnidin the-movement of the screen or bod 13 w en it is being pulled down or exten ed or when being wound up subsequent to release and in addition insure the maintenance of the body or screen in a substantially taut position when extended.

Catches 17 are telescopically arranged within the ends of the tube and are formed at the inner ends with handles 18 which operate through slots 19 near the ends of the tube while also positioned near the end of each tube is-a coiled spring 20 the respective ends of which bear against the in ner ends of the catch and against the partition 21 within the tube in such a manner as to exert tension on the catch to normally hold the catch extended and when extended the free outer portion thereof is arranged between the bearing surfaces or portions 8 of the guides 3 while the free terminal is designed to be arranged within the socket 22 o the adjacent keeper block 23 mounted in turn in the lower end of the adjacent guide To release the catch it is only necessary to engage the handles and slide the catches toward the center of the tube against the tension of the springs to permit of the disengagement of the free ends of thecatches from the sockets 22. In this connection it is to be observed particularly that the spring roller 12 is not provided with a catch whlch consequentl assures of the spring of the roller 12 at a 1 times exerting a tension on the screen so that subsequent to the release of the catches 17 the spring roller will act to automatically rewind both the body 13 and the tapes 14 about the roller.
A hood 24 is removably mounted over the roller and supported by the guides for preventing the action of the weather on the roller and screen when the latter is not in use.
The invention comprises means for laterally compressing the guides on the side edges of the screen when the latter is in extended position and for this purpose there is employed a pair of cam levers disposed on opposite sides of the window frame, each lever or frame by a fastener 28. Adjacent the.
peripheral edge of the cam and opposite the eye or aperture through which the stud 26 passes there is provided a laterally projecting flange 29 which, when the cams are disposed with the handles upwardly, as in Figure 1, are out of engagement with the bracket 27. The guides will then permit free movement of the screen, On rotating the cams, however, to dispose the handles downwardly, the flanges will engage behind the brackets 27 and force the cams into engagement with the adjacent facing of the guide and compress the guide to effect binding engagement on the interposed edges of the screen.
What is claimed is:
A device of the kind described comprising in combination with a spring actuated roller, a screen carried by the roller, resilient tapes secured to the side edges of the screen, guides for the side edges of the screen, each being formed from a single piece of sheet metal folded on itself to provide a flange for attachment to a vertical stile of a window frame, the guides being formed with spaced parallel side portions extending from the attaching flange, one of said side ortions being offset from the flange but both eing inturned at their free edges, the resilient tapes slidably engaging between the inturned portions of the guides, means carried by the screen at its edges and disposed within the guides to prevent lateral or sidewise movement of the screen, and means for movingthe flan es of'each guide towards each other to e ect a clamping operation on the tapes and the adjacent edges of the screen for the purpose s ecified.
