PENCIL HOLDER.
Application filed February 21, 1922. Serial No. 538,301.
T (LR w'hom'z't may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK BAYnn,;acitizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and .5 State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pencil holder, the object of the invention being to provide a pair of 'aws for holding a pencil be- .tween them with means for attaching the jaws to a garment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pair of holders with means for oon- 1a necting them. together in order to support two pencils.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several. no parts, to be hereinafter fully described, il-
lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a sideview of the holder.
Figure 2 is a. view showing a pair of holders connected together,
,The remaining figures are detail views.
In these views 1 and 2 indicate the jaw members which are of curved shape in cross 35, section to conform to the shape of the pencil, each jaw member being provided with ears 3, intermediate their ends, which are perforated to receive the rivets 4 which pivotally connect the two members together. The jaw members are tapered, as shown, with the large parts at the upper ends so as to facilitate the placing of a pencil between the holder. As the pencil is forced through the holder its pointed end will strike the small ends of the jaws and thus force them apart. The small ends are flared outwardly, as at 5, and an appreciable distance above said ends enlargements 6 are formed on the jaw members. A band 7 of resilient material is placed around the jaw members between their flared ends and the enlargements 6. A. pin 8 is secured to one of the jaw members and a hook 9 is also secured to said jaw memberto receive the free end of the pin.
Figure 2 shows a pair of holders A. and B, connected together by the cross plates 10 so that two pencils can be held. The pin 8 is connected with the upperplate and the hook 9 with the lower plate.
The resilient band will draw the two jaw members together and thus cause them to gr p the pencil.
he resilient member may be located at any point below the pivotal point 4 as will be understood.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the sew eral parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is l. A pencil holder of the class described comprising a pair of jaw members pivotally connectedtogether, a band of resilient material encircling the jaw members for causing them to. grip a pencil and a retaining means for said band.
2. A pencil holder of the class described comprising a pair of jaw members of ta pered formation and pivotally connected together, a resilient band encircling the smaller ends of the jaw members and projections on the jaw members forming spaces for receiving the band.
3. A pencil holder of the class described comprising a pair of jaw members of curved shape in cross section and of tapered shape. means for pivotally connecting the central portions of the jaw members together, the small ends of the jaw members flaring outwardly, projections on the outer faces of the jaw members above the flaring ends, a band of resilient material encircling the jaw members between the projections and flaring ends and means on the holder for attaching the same to a garment.
In testimony whereof I afiix 111% signature.
FREDERICK AYER.
