v. R. DESPARD MECHAN I CAL MOVEMENT Filed Sept. 19 1919 Patented Feb. l2, 1924.
isn 'rATEs 1,483,162 .PATENT OFFICE.
VICTOR R. DESIARD, OF HINSDALE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TG ECG'ILL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF VALPARAISO, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
Application led September 19, 1919. Serial No. 324,773.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, VICTOR R. DESPARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hinsdale in the county of` Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mechanical Movements, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this s ecication.
My inventionrelates to switc mechanisms .and has to do more particularly with lever operating mechanisms, being directed to an improved form of switch operating lever and a flexible operating connection therefor.
In connection with switches such as are ordinaril employed for lamp sockets and similar e ectrical circuits universally mounted operating levers are provided from which a cord or pull chain may extend for operating purposes, or in which the lever itself may be grasped for operation. In connection with devices of this character I have provided a simple and effective lever and link or connection which may be readily assembled, cheap to manufacture and positive in operation. In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated one form of my invention in which i Fig. 1 is a, section through a switch mechanism provided with my improved operating lever and connection;
Fig. 2is a perspective view of the lever detached and the chain holding cap therefor; and
Fig. 3 is a top view of the pull chain, link clip, and link, and switch operating element removed from the switch;
Iig. 4 is a perspective view of the link clip, an
Fig. 5 shows the universal lever tilted to an operating position. Y
Referring now more in detail to the construction illustrated, it comprises a tubular lever 5 provided with a flanged head 6 adapted to ride upon a face on the frame 7 which carries the switch mechanism. The lever 5 shown is universally mounted in that it may be tilted in any direction and also moved lineally, that is, by a direct pull. The said lever 5 has an opening at its free end 8 against the outer end cf which a link of the pull chain 9 rests. The pull chain 9 is connected through a link clip 1() to an inner link connection l1 heavier than the ing the small end of the connection 11 through an openin in the end of the connection 12, the en arged head of link 11 being supported by the yoke of 12.- In order to insert the outer chain 9 into the lever 5 I provide an openin 15 in the side of the lever so that the c ain 9 may be pulled therethrough and when properly adjusted pulled over into the central position as shown in Fig. 1 and the cap 16 is then pressed over the end of the lever 1() to cover the opening 15 and hold the chain 9 in place.
The inner end of the link 11, as already. stated, is connected to a switch operating connection 12 pivotally connected to a hooked intermediate member 18 which is connected by a spring 19 to the switch arm 20. Thus successive actuations of the operating lever 5 will effect reciprocations of the Switch arm 20. That is, assuming the mechanism is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the first pull upon lever 5 to a tilted position as in Fig. 5, will shift the switch arm 20 to its alternate position and then ipon :release of the lever 5 itis pulled back to its normal position by operation of the spring 19 which also shifts the intermediate link 18 to its alternate position so that its lower hooks are in engagement with the lower arm of the switch frame. i
In assembling the lever and link mechanism, the switch mechanism is of course out of the shell 21 and cap 22 and the switch frame is at this time out of the insulating mounting blocks 23, 24. The lever 5, link clip 1() and chain 9 are all disconnected and free from the switch. Link 11 has been'inserted through the connection 12 as in Figs. 1 and 3. The thin arm 10a of clip 10 is now inserted through the hole in the end of link 11 and moved to its positions in Figs. 1 and 3. The end ball of pull chain 9 is now sprung into the end of the clip 10 and the lever 5 is now put in place by passing the chain through the side opening 15.
The parts are so proportioned that a slight pull on 4the chain is necessary to have a ball rest against the outside end face of the lever 5 under tension of spring 19. Cap 16 is now forced overthe end of lever 5.
The parts 5, 9, 10, 11, 12 are now held together and the lever 5 may be tilted in any direction, the rounded inner end of clip 10 riding on the rounded face of the seat carried by the switch frame 7( The parts may also be readily separated when desired.
Although l have shown and described my invention in connection with a particular kind of switch mechanism, it is to be understood that it may be applied to othertypes of switches and I also contemplate makin changes and modifications therein so that do not desire to be limited to the exact structurel shown and ldescribed but aim to cover all that which comes within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to` secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Operating mechanism for switches comprising a tubular operating'lever having an lnturned Harige at one end provided with an opening through the side of the lever connecting with an opening through the ianged end, a ball chain passed through the side opening of the tube and a ball link of which engages the lever ange to support the chain, and means for holding the chain in its supported position.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a tubular lever having an inturned flange at one end and provided with a central opening through the ange connected with an enlarged opening through the side of the lever, said openings being adapted to receive and support a ball chain at the flange opening, together with a cap for holding such a chain in its supported position.
3. Switch mechanism comprising a switch movement having a frame, a seat on the frame, a lever having a portion engaging the seat to tilt thereon in any direction, and a connection extending from the lever through the seat to the movement, said connection comprising a retaining clip readily removably held in the lever and a substanmaaien tially rigid link pivotally connected at one end to the movement and pivotally' connected at its other end to said retaining clip.
4. In a switch, switchmechanism, a tubular operating lever for said mechanlsm having an inturned interrupted iange at a :tree end, a member upon which said lever is ada ted to tilt in any direction, a clip inside saidplever, a connection from the clip to the mechanism, an operating chain connection from the clip extending outwardly through the end of the lever hooked over the inturned flange thereof, and a cap for the lever encircling the chain and having an inturned flange to hold the chain in engagement with the lever iange.
5. Operating mechanism for switches com-A prising a ball chain, a lever having a free operating end, said free end having an inturned flange thereon, and being provided with an opening therein, said lever being provided with an opening through the side thereof connecting with said end opening, through which a ball of .the .chain may be inserted and moved into holding engagement with said Bange and a cap for the end of saidlever. y
6. perating mechanism for'switches comprising a switch frame, a tubular lever, means for supporting said lever against the frame, means on said frame upon which said lever is adapted to 'tilt in any direction, switch mechanism, a link extending from the switch mechanism toward the lever, a ball ended pull chain extending into the free end ot' the lever, a lll-shaped spring link clip connecting theJ link and chain, one arm of the clip passing through the link and the free ends of both arms grasping the ball end of the pull chain.

The combination with a switch mechanism of a hollow operating lever for said mechanism and a connection extendingfrom said lever to said mechanism comprising a retainingv clip mounted in said lever, and a link pivotally connected at one end to the switch mechanism and at the other end to said clip and a chain extending into said lever and connected with said clip.
In witness whereof, l hereunto subscribe my name this 13th day of August, A. D.
