I. F. WHITE SANDING DEVICE FOR MINE MOTORS Fiied Oct. 15,
Patented Feb. 5, 1924.
UNITED STATES IRA. WHITE, OAKWOOID, ILLINOIS.
SANDING DEVICE FOR MINE MOTORS.
Application filed October 15, 1923. Serial No. 668,753.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA F. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Oakwood, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanding Devices for Mine Motors, of which the followin isa specification.
y invention relates to sanding devices for mine motors, my purpose being to provide a device of this kind that is simple in construction, cheap and easy to produce,
capable of installation on mine motors of present design without alteration or change therein, that is quick and positive in its operation and that includes means to assure breaking up of the sand and to prevent packing thereof.
With the foregoing and other purposes in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the different views,
Figure 1 is a top plan view showing conventionally a mine motor equipped with my improved sanding device;
Figure 2, a side elevation; and
Figure 3, a transverse section on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it willbe observed that my improved sand ing device is shown operatively applied to a mine motor A, which motor may be of any preferred design, the same being conventionally illustrated and including essentially a frame 10 and wheels 11 adapted totravel on the rails 12.
Formed as parts of the frame 10, or formed separately therefrom and secured thereto in any preferred manner, are two pairs of sand boxes 13, 13 and 14, 14 located, respectively, at opposite ends of the motor with the boxes of each pair overlying the respective rails 12 preferably adjacent to the wheels 11.
Leading downward from an opening in the bottom of each sand box is a pipe 15 .for conveying sand at predetermined times to the rails 12, while within each box, in ofi'set relation to the sand delivery opening in the bottom thereof, is a. vertical shaft 16 carryinga plate 17 that normally overlies said opening and constitutes a valve for controlling the delivery of sand therethrough. Fixed to the upper end of each shaft 16 is a lever arm 18 and as shown the lever arms of the shafts 16 associated with sand boxes 13, 13 are connected by a rack bar 19, while the lever arms of the shafts 16 associated with sand boxes 14, 14 are connected by a rack bar 20. Thus, upon shifting either rack bar to swing its associated lever arms 18, the associated pair of shafts 16, 16 are rotated with the result that plates 17, 17 on said shafts are moved either to uncover the delivery openings in the bottoms of the boxes to permit sand to flow therefrom, or to cover said delivery openings and prevent delivery of sand from the boxes. Agitating arms 21, a plurality of which are fixed to each shaft 16 serve to break up the sand within the respective boxes wheneverthe shafts are rotated, and thus packing of sand within the boxes is prevented.
A pair of stops 22, 22 associated with each pair of lever arms 18 serve to limit rotation of the shafts 16 in both directions, so that it is impossible to impart excessive swinging movement to the plates 17.
Mounted on the frame of the motor is a pair of shafts 23, 24, the former of which is equipped with a pinion 25 meshing with the teeth of rack bar 19 and the latter of which is equipped with a pinion 26 meshing with the rack bar 20. Shafts 23, 24 are arranged close to one another and their adjacent ends are equipped with hand wheels 27, 28, respectively, whereby they may be independently rotated to shift one or the other of the rack bars 19 or 20 and secure delivery of sand from either desired pair of sand boxes.
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings it is believed that the construction, operation and advantages of my improved sanding device will be apparent. It is desired to point out, however, that various changes and desirable additions may be made in and to the structure shown within the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. A sanding device for mine motors comprising a pair of sand boxes located one to either side of the motor and each having a delivery opening, a shaft in each box carrying a plate to control delivery of sand through said delivery openings, agitating fingers carried by said shafts, and means for rotating said shafts.
2. A sanding device for mine motors including a sand box having a delivery opening, a rotatable shaft within said box, a plate carried by said shaft to control delivery of sand through said opening, means for rotating said shaft, and means carried by said shaft to agitate and break up sand within the box when the shaft is rotated.
1 ,asapae 3. A sanding device for mine motors comprising a pair of sand boxes each having a delivery opening, a shaft associated with each box, means carried by the respective shafts for controlling delivery of sand through said openings, a lever arm on each shaft, a rack bar connecting said lever arms, a pinion meshing with said rack bar, and means for rotating said pinion.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
- IRA F. WHITE.
