Description

G. W. HUTCHINS.
Y Lastng-Pinchers.
N0,l.48,301 i Patented March l0. 1874.
ggf/ww e ymd @@@JW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEc GEORGE W. HUTOHINS, OF DOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO LAURISTON OHAMBERLAIN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT INv LASTlNG-PINCHERS.
Specification forming part oi Letters Patent No. 145,30l, dated March 10, 1674; application ilcd December 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HUToI-I'INS, of Dover, in -the county of Stratford, State of New Hampshire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lasting-Pinchers, of which the following is a description sufiiciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my inventionappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany-r ing drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved lasting-pinchers.
My improvement relates to that class oi' shoemakers tools used in lasting or litting boots and shoes to the last; and consists in the combination of several of the most common tools usually required for that purpose in one implement, the object being to save eX pense, and also to lobviate the necessity of using a different tool for each operation in the process of lasting. f
In the drawing, A is the haft or handle; B, the hammer; O, the lower or rigid jaw of the pinchers 5 D, the upper or movable jaw of the same, supported on the fulcrum I, and provided with the spring H attached to the handle A; and F, an awl, fastened in the peau of the pinchers by the set-screw G. The handle A is also provided atthe end E with a polisher or .colt,77 for rubbing down and taking out the crimps in the uppers, and for nishing the edge of the sole. The awl F is provided with the coiled spring z, attached to the peau of the pinchers and arrangedin such a manner as to assist, by its expansive action, in withdrawing the awl from the leather.
Instead of the coiled spring shown, a rubber spring can be used for the same purpose, andv may be disposed in a socket forinedarounf'l the awl in said peau, or slipped on over the awl, and used without such socket, as may be preferred.
The simplicity of my invention renders a lengthy description unnecessary.
In lasting a boot or shoe, it is well known by all conversant with such matters that several different tools are constantly required, which are here found in combination in the most convenient form. In addition thereto, the burnisher or polisher E is provided to be used in rubbing down the wrinkles or ridges in the uppers which form during the process 0i' lasting, and, iinally, for finishing off the Sole.
It will be seen that the oost of' the various tools found combined in the device shown would be very much more in the aggregate than the cost of my improved lasting-tool, to say nothing of the inconvenience and loss of time-arising from the use oi several tools instead of one.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The lasting-pinchers described, consisting of the pivoted jaws C l), having a long and short handle, the long handle' being provided with the burnisher E and spring H, the hammer B and awl F, the awl being provided with the spring Z, and the whole combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
GEO. WV. HUTCHINS.
