FLAX AND-LIKE PULLING OR HARVESTING 'MACHINE.

To whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL Ciniwroun IRVINE, of 67 Clif-tonpa'rk Avenue, Belfast, Ireland, a subjectof theKing of Great Brit am and Ireland, have invented certain newand useful Improvements Relating to 1 1212; and like Pulling or Harvesting Machines, of which the followingis a specification.
This inventionrelatesto flax, andlike pulling or harvesting machines, having means whereby" the flax, or the like is gripped between a number of fixed and movable pins or fingers to pull the same out of the ground, and to release it at a suitablepoint, said pins or fingers being-carried on a frame ro tatedby gearing from the road wheels.
Under thisinvention I provide means adapted to engage the pulled flax at a point where it is released from the grippingpins, or fingers, and'to deliverit to the rear-pf the machine; consisting, of iLmClGV'lCB comprising a numberof pins, in 't'l1e-fornrof a comboarried on a spindle, oneend' of the latter be-ingconnected to a-member carried by an endless chain, whilst on the other endthereof issecured another member connected to an endless chain,- and a double arm lever having rollers which engage a camsupported by. the framework of the machine.
The invention further consists in the provision of means for lifting fallen flax orthe 1ike,so that it can be gripped by'the gripping pins,said means consisting of av rod or bar,-or equivalent one end of whichtls slidably carried in a-slottedbarconnectedwlth the framework of the m-achine,-whilst-the other end of the-bar or rod extends towards the front of the 'machine, and is pivotally connected with a member carried by anendless chain, that is rotated through gearing from the road Wlieels,.so' that the rod, or bar, will be given a. backwardiand down- Wardand then forward and upward move ment' tolift thefallen flax so as to be gripped by the gripping pins or fingers.

The inner end of the spindle-125m connected to a double arn1- member 15,1iaving rollers 16 and- 17, adaptedto engagea' cam 18 supported by brac-k et s 18and 18 from the machine framework 61: The cam 18 is made with a cam race or=- groove 18 ex tending around same,this cam race cont-rot ling the movement 1 of th roller 1 7 on the member 15. A groove 18 extendinguround a portion of the cam 18, and on the outside of the groove18 controls-thenrovement of the roller 16. Secured ion the spindle 12-is a bar 20 having secured thereto a plurality of pins 21 forming a comb. The movement of the rollers 16 and 17 in the cam 18 imparts the necessary movement to the comb, required, to bring the same intoengagement with the flax as *it is -beingi released the gripping pins Qand 3, and to carry the 'over to the rear ofthe machine. The arrangement is=such that When-theflax; is being pulled bythe turning of the frame 1 and gripped between the grippingpins or fingers 2 and 3, the rollers 16 andlf? onthe double arm member lo will be movedround the cam in the directionvof. the arrow Z,,and on the roller *16enter1ngthe groove 18, the
comb will be brought intoa horizontalposition underneaththe rollers 7 and8, and as; the said cam roller, 16 reaches the point 18 of the cam it will be released from operative connectionv With-the same by the groove 18 and the 1 comb f will decline towards the ground When theroller 1T reaches' the point 18 of the groove 18", the comb will be turned upwards towards the flax and into engagement therewith, and on the roller 17 reaching the top portion of the cam race of the cam, the comb is caused to incline towards the back of the machine and the direngaged ends of the flax will rest on and be assisted backwards by the rollers 7 and 8 as it is being carried over by the comb to the rear of the machine.
One end 22 of a bar 22 is movably supported in a slotted bar 23 supported by the frame work 6 of the machine. The bar is connected near the centre thereof to a member 24: connected to the chain of the chain and sprocket drive 25, mounted on the spindles 7 and S of the rollers 7 and 8, the arrangement being such that when the flax is being pulled by the gripping pins or fingers 2' and 8 the rotation of the chain and sprocket drive 25 will cause the bar 22 to be given a backward and downward and then forward and upward movement, so that any fallen flax will be lifted towards and carried into engagement with the gripping pins or fingers. A similar arrangement may, if desired, be provided at the other side of the machine to lift the fallen flax towards the gripping fingers.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a flax or like pulling and harvesting machine, the combination with means for pulling the material out of the ground and releasing it at a suitable point, of a comb for engaging the pulled material and means for moving said comb to deposit said material away from said pulling means.
2. In a flax or like pulling and harvesting machine, the combination with means for pulling the material out of the ground and releasing it at a suitable point of a comb for engaging the pulled material and means for imparting a combined angular and translator-y movement to said comb in order to deposit said material away from said pulling means.
3. In a flax or like pulling and harvesting machine, the combination with means for pulling the material out of the ground and releasing it at a suitable point, or a comb for engaging the pulled material, a spindle supporting said comb, means for positively rotating said spindle, members mounted on said spindle and carried by said positively rotating means, and means for positively rotating said rollers from the road wheels of the machine for imparting a combined angular and translator-y movement to the comb in order to engage the pulled material.
4. In a flax or like pulling and harvesting machine, the combination with means for pulling the material out of the ground and releasing it at a suitable point of a comb for engaging the pulled material, a spindle supporting said comb, members supported by said spindle and carried by endless chains, supporting rollers for the pulled material, gear wheels on the supporting rollers for rotating said chains, a double arm lever mounted on said spindle, guide rollers on said lever, and means engaging said guide rollers for imparting a combined angular and translatory movement to the comb in order to engage and deposit the pulled material away from said pulling means.
5. In a flax or like pulling and harvesting machine, the combination with means for pulling the material out of the ground and releasing it at a suitable point, of a comb for engaging the pulled material, a spindle supporting said comb, endless chains rotating said spindle, members supported on said chains, supporting rollers for the pulled material, gear wheels for rotating said chains mounted on the axles of the supporting rollers, a double arm lever on said spindle, guide rollers on said lever, and a cam engaging the said rollers for imparting angular and translatory movement to the comb in order to engage and deposit the pulled material away from the said pulling means.
6. In a flax or like pulling and harvesting machine, the combination with means for pulling the material out of the ground and releasing it at a suitable point, of a comb for engaging the pulled material, a spindle sup porting said comb, endless chains rotating said spindle, members supported on said chains, supporting rollers for the pulled material, gear wheels for rotating said chains mounted on the axles of the supporting rollers, a double arm lever on said spindle, guide rollers on said lever, a cam engaging said guide rollers, a cam race on said cam for controlling the movement of one guide roller and a cam race extending partially round said cam for controlling the move ment of the other guide roller, so as to impart a combined angular and translatory movement to the comb in order to engage and deposit the pulled material away from the said pulling means.
7. In a flax or like pulling and harvesting machine, the combination with means for pulling the material out of the ground and releasing it at a suitable point, a side bar for engaging fallen material at the side of the machine for lifting same into engagement with the means for pulling the material out of the ground, and a comb for engaging the pulled material, and means for moving said comb to deposit said material away from said pulling means.
8. In a flax or like pulling and harvesting machine, the combination with means for pulling the material out of the ground and releasing it at a suitable point, of a side bar for engaging fallen material at the side of the machine and fitting same into engagement with the means for pulling the material out of the ground, a comb for engaging the pulled material and means for imparting a combined angular and translatory movement to said comb in order to deposit said material away from said pulling means.
9. In a flax or like pulling and harvesting machine the combination with means for pulling the material out of the ground and releasing it at a suitable point, of a side bar, means for positively reciprocating said bar and means for guiding said bar in order to impart a backward and forward movement and then upward and forward movement to the bar for lifting the fallen material into engagement with the means for pulling the material out of the ground, a comb for engaging the pulled material, and means for imparting a combined angular and translatory movement to the comb in order to deposit said material away from the said pulling means.
10. In a flax or like pulling and harvesting machine, the combination with means for pulling the material out of the ground and releasing it at a suitable point, of aside bar, a member mounted on said bar and carried by positively reciprocating means, rollers for supporting the pulled material engaging said means, means for positively rotating said rollers from the road wheels of the machine, means for guiding said bar in order to impart a backward and forward movement, and then upward and forward movement to the bar for lifting fallen material into engagement with the'means for pulling the material out of the ground, a comb for engaging the pulled material, and means for imparting a combined angular and translatory movement to the comb in order to deposit said material away from the said pulling means.
11. In a flax or like pulling or harvesting machine, the combinationwith means for pulling the material out of the ground and releasing it at a suitable point, of a side bar, a member mounted on said bar and carried by an endless chain, supporting rollers for the pulled material, gear wheels on the supporting rollers engaging said endless chain, means for positively rotating said rollers from the road wheels of the machine, means for guiding the bar in order to impart a backward and forward movement, and then upward and forward movement to the bar for lifting fallen material into engagement with means for pulling the material out of the ground, a comb for engaging the pulled material, a spindle supporting said comb, means for positively rotating said spindle, members mounted on said spindle and carried by said positively rotating means, rollers for supporting the pulled material engaging said means, and means for positively rotating said rollers from the road wheels of the machine.
12. In a flax or like pulling and harvesting machine, the combination with means for pulling the material out of the ground and releasing it at a suitable point, of a side bar, a member mounted on said bar and carried by an endless chain, supporting rollers for the pulled material, gear wheels on said supporting rollers engaging said endless chain, a bracket supported on the frame of the machine, a guideway in said bracket and means for slidably reciprocating said bar in said bracket in order to impart a backward and forward movement, and then upward and forward movement to the bar for lifting fallen flax into engagement with means for pulling the material out of the ground, a comb for engaging the pulled material, a spindle supporting said comb, endless chains rotating said spindle, members supported on said chains, supporting rollers for the pulled material, gear wheels for rotating said chains mounted on the axles of the supporting rollers, a double arm lever on said spindle, guide rollers on said lever, and a cam engaging said guide rollers for imparting an angular and translatory movement to the comb in order to engage and deposit the pulled material away from the said pulling means.
